Go ahead…scroll down and see for yourself… With continued care, owning this fine automobile will make you feel that way every time you see and drive it. With the average car's lifespan being about a dozen years and the attrition rate often accelerated by careless second-hand owners, it'd be a nice surprise to find an example of the species that, despite being 16 years old, still shines and sparkles like a late-model. The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of British car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well-preserved car presented for auction here! Purchased new for over $60,000 by a mature woman who lives in the affluent suburbs of Corona Del Mar, CA, she has treated the car like her one and only child. The result is a vintage Cabriolet that was always garaged; meticulously dealer maintained and has never left the Golden State. Exterior: No, this is not a repaint but the factory original finish. After nearly two decades on the road, most cars have become rusty and damaged, or have been "restored" by well-meaning folks who usually remove what they perceive to be "flaws" on the car's finish. In reality, a clean, 100% rust and collision free, original finish with a few VERY minor door dings, chips, scuffs and scratches, is a very rare and highly desirable trait of any collectible automobile! In this case, what lies beyond the shiny exterior speaks volumes about the loving care this XJS has always received and underscores the car's Southern California provenance. Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork today, we marvel at how well the finish was preserved over the years. In fact, with little preparation, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed a local car show or Concours d'Elegance. 4 brand new BF Goodrich Radial TA tires were just installed. Brake covers were fitted behind the factory-correct, alloy wheels to prevent annoying brake dust from collecting and to preserve their nice detail. Speaking of detail, let us stress how straight the body is, how perfect the chrome, how glossy the paint: if you wouldn't know differently, you'd think to be looking at a 16-month old, not a 16-year old car. This one is that clean! Engine & Mechanical: In April 1994, some of the XJS models were lucky enough to receive the bullet-proof, AJ16 engine with coil on plug ignition. British mechanics worldwide champion this drive train as far superior to the heavier V12. Properly maintained, the 4.0 ltr. 6-cylinder can be driven well over 250,000 without needing major work. This engine compartment is all original, factory-correct, down to the decals and markings. Originality abounds. This is a numbers matching Jaguar, featuring its factory-installed 6-cylinder engine and all the original ancillaries. Surprisingly perhaps, the wiring looks fantastic, the car always runs cool, and there are no oil leaks worth mentioning. Beyond routine tune-ups & oil changes, thousands of dollars were invested over the years into preventative maintenance, mainly to the engine, its ancillaries, suspension and braking systems. Included in the most recent dealer maintenance records are the 100,000 and 120,000 services from Mission Viejo Jaguar. Recently, a brand new A/C Compressor was installed and the oil was freshly changed last week. No wear item has been left unattended; As a result, this XJS is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically. Yes, any XJS can be a very tough and reliable automobile with a bit of preventative maintenance! We'll inspect the interior next, shall we? Like a bottle of fine wine, a Jaguar interior does not age gracefully if the car is not stored properly. Typically, as these expensive Jags grow older and get resold or replaced by a newer car, they lose their spot in the garage and are left exposed to outside elements. Unfortunately, the great outdoors becomes the "Akeley’s heel" to an aging Jaguar as bad things begin to happen. All the expensive leather, wood trim and top canvas becomes dried, faded and cracked; costing thousands of dollars to repair or replace. But not in this case! Always garaged and never smoked in, the original, leather seats are still soft and supple, the wool carpet appears untouched and the genuine wood trim has not become cracked or faded and is virtually pristine. There are however some cosmetic flaws along the top passenger door panel (see photos) where minor tears and scratches are visible. Otherwise, everything looks, smells, feels and operates as if the car was delivered yesterday, not 16 years ago. The full array of factory gauges all work flawlessly. The 4-speaker, AM/FM audio system with 6-disk CD changer guarantees pleasurable audio even when traveling topless at speeds well above the double nickel. Also included are BOTH sets of keys, original tags and remotes. The complete books and Owner’s Manuals are securely tucked into their original leather binders. Both security radio code cards (to unlock the audio system) have never been removed from the original, cardholder. The air conditioning system just received a full service and a brand new compressor was installed. The A/C blows ICE COLD. Finally, a brand-new, black, convertible top and headliner was just fitted. The black canvas fits tight as a drum and nicely complements the car’s “triple black” color scheme. The power feature works perfectly and the top folds up or down in seconds at the flip of a switch. Both driver and passenger ash trays and liter have never been used. Also located here is the cruise control and switch to set the transmission for normal "N", sport "S" or no first geer "-1" driving. Very nice. The spacious trunk contains all the important bits: Spare wheel/tire, jack & lug wrench (in original pouch) and 6-disk CD changer. A picture says more than a thousand words: This all original trunk is clean! Drivability: The three famous words that best describe the XJS experience are smooth, silent, sensuous. This Roadster can cruise at speeds that many cars would struggle to reach and does so in a grand manner. Its lighter, 6-cylinder engine and suspension layout is intelligently engineered and the power-to-weight ratio is very favorable, indeed. In any climate, the powerful engine starts every time, idles, revs and pulls effortlessly without unusual noises or hesitation and accelerates strong and smooth leaving no smoke in your rear-view mirror. Warmed up, the oil pressure ranges from about 35 lbs. at idle to a reassuring 75 lbs. at speed. Coolant temperature remains absolutely stable, with no hint of overheating even after extended runs at high speeds. Power steering is precise and the 4-speed, automatic transmission shifts seamlessly. The disc brakes anchor the car securely, in a straight line, and without any hint of fading. Throwing this XJS through the curves aided by new, BF Goodrich Radial TA tires; handling and braking are superb with no rattles, shakes, shimmies or pulls. All in all, this Jaguar is a thoroughly convincing performer and a joy to drive! Despite its age and miles, the car is perfectly reliable and ready to be driven anywhere, even across the Country, if that's where you live. Pound for pound, the 6-Cylinder Jaguar XJS is among the finest, most reliable luxury sports cars ever made. In the end, what makes these cars so desirable is the strong character. This results from a combination of heritage, styling, engineering, scarcity, and raw mystique. No other cars at affordable prices generate the same passion as the XJS and few PRACTICAL cars top it at ANY price. Finally, the XJS has reached the bottom-end of the depreciation curve. A perfect time to buy. Being one of the last of the breed, this XJS has fantastic appreciation potential and can easily serve as a reliable daily driver. To make things even better, reasonably priced spare parts and service are readily available. To state it succinctly: This XJS will deliver on its promise! There's but one stumbling block on the way to XJS heaven: one owner, garaged, unmolested, dealer serviced examples are getting very hard to find.
