Vehicle Detail

I’ve owned this Prius since 2008 (April 15 to be exact). We’ve taken good care of the car, been many places, taught kids how to drive in it etc, etc. I got the red triangle and a bunch of other lights a few weeks ago and it ended up disabling the car (no Drive or Reverse) once the ignition was turned off. You can disconnect the 12V battery and temporarily clear the code so I did that and drove it to the dealer. They said inverter needed replaced at a cost of over $5000. I took it back home started looking around and found a bunch of inverters on eBay. Obviously, people are getting them out with electrocuting themselves so I researched how to replace it. I ended up buying one and replaced mine over last weekend and the same lights came on. Then I bought my own mini VCI off amazon to see exactly what code was in there (apparently there are “detail codes” too). The dealership put code P0AA6 on my paperwork but no detail code. I got codes P0AA6, P0A7A, and P0A92. The detail code for P0AA6 is 613, which indicates a problem with the transaxle. Further research I did would appear to confirm this is an issue with the transaxle. If you google “Gen 2 Prius (2004-2009) Transmission Failure, P0AA6, P0A92, P0A7A”, you’ll see a blog entry by what appears to be a pretty well-respected shop that specializes in hybrids. If the inverter replacement (which, by the way, would have made me a real unhappy camper if I paid the dealership $5000 and still had the same problem) was $5000+, I’m sure this would be about the same if not more. I don’t believe the problem is the inverter unless I got one off ebay broken the same way. I have neither the resources or expertise to pull the transmission out of it. The oil was changed regularly and I have paperwork from the dealer for repairs that occurred: May 2014: Combination display replaced under warranty. I had that weird problem where the dash blanked out. Drive belt replaced, Axle seal replaced, replaced all 4 tires: $806 Summer 2017: Sometime around here I had $1600 worth of repair done on the A/C (evaporator) by a local shop but I can’t find the receipt. Dec 2017: Replaced 2 front tires: $322 Feb 2018: Brakes all around: $405 Feb 2018: Driver side wheel bearing: $621 Feb 2018: Hybrid battery replaced (Green Bean Battery): $1549 Mar 2018: Replaced MFD with one off eBay: $120 Aug 2018: Inverter pump replaced (I did it myself): $139 Sep 2018: Passenger wheel bearing replaced: $586 Green Bean warranties the hybrid battery for a period of 5 years and it’s transferable BUT has to stay in the vehicle it was installed in. The sun has not been kind to it here on the gulf coast but it doesn’t have the rust issues you see up north. The hood is chipped up, that’s why the bra is on it. I also hear a noise from behind the dash which may be the “3-way coolant pump” based on research I did. I have the title in my hand, no liens, no brands. This is parts only, no warranty, no return. Someone out there has to be able to use it for something. Oh, as an added bonus you get an extra inverter that there probably isn’t anything wrong with. I can probably disconnect the battery and reset the code so it can be driven onto a trailer but this is as-is/where-is deal. I'm not a Toyota repair tech, just a toxically masculine man sitting on the couch searching google on my laptop between old episodes of American Gladiators. Your best bet would be to take those screenshots of the codes to a Toyota dealer (not the one I went to though) and ask them what they think. Unless you have a shop equipped to do whatever repair needs done or swap another lower mileage engine in, I strongly doubt this would be economical to repair. I have a background in electronics, rebuilt/repaired many a motorcycle and ATV engine, and write Search Processing Language for a living so if it was anything simple I probably would have figured it out. Hence being sold as "parts only." I hope that answers your question searunner, I hate to see it go but I think it's going to be expensive whatever it turns out to be. Thanks for your interest. On Jan-24-19 at 16:53:36 PST, seller added the following information: ... and I'm not sure how all those credit cards ended up in the auction under "shipping and payment." I selected "Cash (in person)" as shown in the photo I added.
