2000 VW Jetta 2.8 VR6: Car Runs but needs work: Project Car or use for parts This car is perfect for someone who wants one of the best engines VW has ever made-the 2.8, 6 cylinder VR6 power-plant.Engine is in great shape-near perfect condition for its age and mileage. Has the unique VR6 sound (referred to as the Chewbacca growl;) and pulls hard. Car is mated with a manual transmission and the car starts rights up and runs. Here are the known issues with the car: (car was sitting for 8 months before new battery installed-started immediately)radiator leaking heavily-will need to be replacedrack and pinion leaking-may be able to be repaired, most likely replaced. makes car feel like it has manual steering instead of power steering.Those are the known issues. Here are things that should be checked out due to car sitting.electrical-everything lights up, doors locked and unlocked, sunroof opened and closed, everything seemed normal but should be reviewedignition/alternator-car started right up and turns over, but again, car has been sittingbrakes/brake lines-seemed fine when driven. should be checked out-brakes seemed fine and had good stopping power.Timing chain. While the chain seems fine, I have not checked the tensioners and plastic guidesFuel lines-did not detect or see any leaks nor experience any lack of power or sputtering when drivingTires-have good tread and no flat spots-tire pressure seems constantHeadlights work, both normal and high beamsDashboard-has the glowing blue/red dials when lights are on-all lights appear to work fineall fuses seem to be in good working orderAs stated the car had been sitting. I have driven it the past few days but not for long distances due to radiator and pinion leaks. Car shifted fine and besides the known issues above operated fine. This car should be towed/transported to your location should you decide to purchase. The engine is the main reason to buy this car. This engine is great! Fix this car or put the engine into a car that you're already working on. Price you see is basically for the engine-consider everything else you're getting for free. $850.00
