It made it’s debut on the US market in 1989 available in 3 body forms, a 2 seater T-top model, a 2+2 seater T-topmodel, and a 2 seater hard top model (referred to in Z communities as a slicktop). In 1993, a factory built convertible was added to the range after coach-built convertible specials by companies such as Stramanproved to be desirable. Production for the Z32 300ZX ended in 1996 in the US, though production continued through 2000 in Japan. Around 90,000 total were sold in the US market, and 165,000 were sold worldwide. There were two engine options available for the Z32 from the time it came out. The cheaper drivetrain option was a naturally aspirated 3.0L VG30DE V6 with 222HP. Optional was a twin turbocharged 3.0L VG30DET V6 with 300HP, which was only available in the US market on 2 seater T-topmodels. Both engines were available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4 speed automatic. Nissan used the TT models as a chance to showcase a selection of complicated technology, which included Super HICAS (rear wheel steering which was first hydraulically, then electronically actuated), dual side mounted intercoolers, and a two-mode electronically adjustable suspension (with touring and sport modes, depending on how the owner was driving it). TT models were visibly distinguished by 3 slots on either side of the front bumper in order to improve airflow to the intercoolers and a spoiler. Though the Z31 was also a very modern car, it had nowhere near the level of technology that the Z32 did. From the factory, the twin turbo 300ZX was rather potent, hitting 60 miles per hour in a claimed 5.5 seconds and going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 MPH. In its time, it was praised not only for its straight line speed but also it’s impressive and predictable handling, along with its high-speed stability. The car was so well received that it was placed on Car and Driver’s 10 Best list for 7 consecutive years. Throughout the years, the Z32 went through a selection of changes, both minor and significant. This included a change from analog to digital climate control controls, the addition of driver and eventually passenger airbags, and an updated rear spoiler for twin turbo models. In 1996 specifically, there were a selection of significant changes to the Z32 to meet updated EPA requirements. This included the addition of OBD-II and the removal of VVT. The particular 300ZX in question is one produced in 7/96, and was the last Z32 300ZX ever sold on the US market. It is one of 300 “Commemorative Edition” 300ZXs produced in 1996, which comprised the last 300 Z32s sold in the US. This Z was given Maurey Sage after being produced and was stored almost instantly afterward, after a short time being in the Petersen Automotive Museum. It was specified with a black exterior (KH3 Onyx), tan leather interior and a 5-speed manual. It has just 500 miles since new and this number is reflected in the condition of the car.
