The 4rd generation (1998-2005) is among the most popular with amazing power and economy, an elegantly detailed interior and a suspension so smooth you'd swear its engineering inspiration was a canoe on a glassy lake. Edmunds gave the “Gen 4” S-Class a 5 out of 5 reliability rating, MSN Autos assigned an expert rating of 9.0 out of 10 and Forbes described the S500 as "built remarkably well." Exterior: The immaculate body and trim not only speak volumes about the loving care this Mercedes has always received but underscores its Southern California provenance. There is one 3-inch area on the lower driver door (see photos above) where the paint is bubbled from minor surface rust. Also, there are scuffs along the left-rear bumper (see photos). The worst among the few other minor chips, scuffs & scratches can be seen in the above photos of the rear bumper. Other than these areas, the original 15-year old finish still looks fantastic.
