Vehicle Detail

1966 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE Up for sale is a 1966 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE that has had an EXTENSIVE 5 1/2-year GROUND-UP RESTORATION. It is Vintage Burgundy in color with a parchment top and Pony interior. A/C with power brakes, steering and top. OWNERSHIP HISTORY In 1978, I purchased the subject Mustang in Dothan, Alabama from its second owner. I drove it mostly on weekends until 1984, at which time I retired it to my garage as the result of my decision to keep up with the current fad and perform a ground-up restoration. Restoration commenced in 1984 by dismantling the car which included removing, entire running gear, removable panels and some panels not meant to be removed, everything bolted, screwed down, wired and a number of things that were welded, reducing the car to nothing more than a naked chassis on wooden stands. At this same time, I purchased from a Ford dealer all the original Ford parts thought to be needed to complete a ground-up restoration. From 1984 to 1987, other than the dismantling, there was little work done due to my normal work week of 72 hrs. Restoration came to a halt in 1987 as the result of an unplanned temporary change in job location. The temporary change was scheduled to end within 90 days. However, 90 days turned into 18 years at which time the car sat in the garage untouched until 2005. Early 2005, following retirement, I officially restarted restoration for the second time. Restoration was completed in November of 2010 at the tune of over 6500 man hours and 3 lbs. of invoices. SPECIFICATIONS Engine – 289 2v – C-Code: Original – Rebuilt Transmission – C-4 Automatic: Original – Rebuilt Gears – 2.80:1: Original – RebuiltVIN - 6T08C256289: Appears on driver’s door, Buck Tag and two on inter-fender with only one accessible OPTIONS Remote Adjustable Driver Outside and Stationary Passenger Mirrors: Scott Drake Reproduction A/C: Original – Factory optioned A/C car upgraded to R134A using the Original restored evaporator. Color: Currently finished in a rare 1966 Mustang Vintage Burgundy. The Original color was Wimbledon White, a popular 1966 Mustang option. The Original color is identified by the letter code “M” as it appears on the VIN tag located on the driver’s door and Buck Tag located on the driver’s inter-fender. Were the Original color to be Vintage Burgundy the letter code would have appeared as an “X”.NOTE: Most of the permanently installed sheet metal panels were factory painted the original color on the underside prior to assembly. Once the panels were installed some of the underside painted areas were visible, however inaccessible to a re-paint. In order to achieve a high-quality restoration, the panels that prevented a re-paint were removed and painted on underside with 1966 Mustang “X” Code Vintage Burgundy before being reassembled. Due to the extent of this restoration the letter “M” as it appears on VIN tag and Buck tag is the only way to tell the original factory color. There is not a trace of Wimbledon White “M” code paint left to be found. RESTORATION Continuing in 2005, with work where we left off 18 years ago, the chassis was again stripped, treated and given a coat of POR-15. Trunk and engine compartments were stripped, primed and appropriately painted. Both outer rear wheel-wells were replaced due excessive pitting – no rust thru. Both original quarter panels, previously removed to accommodate removal of wheel-wells, were replaced with NOS Ford quarter panels purchased in 1984. Replaced both short front floor pans due to pitting - no rust thru. Removed cowl vent assembly using spot weld removal tool by drilling out 125 spot welds to access and repair the driver and passenger fresh air vents; the fresh air vents being the root cause of the pitting of floor pans. NOTE: Spot weld removal tool permits reinstalling original cowl vent assembly without modifications or critical adjustments as would be required if using reproduction cowl vent assembly. Repaired both fresh air vents and painted entire cowling area. Painted and reinstalled cowl vent assembly using an automotive adhesive brand name “Lords”. NOTE: Underside of cowl vent assembly panel, located just above the fresh air vents, were areas that Ford Motor Co had not treated nor painted. Fortunately, surface rust was the only thing that had to be dealt with. The actual condition of the removed assembly was not nearly as bad as portrayed by the pictures. With the 65 and 66 Mustangs, this is a common, but unknown problem as most restorations don’t include removal of the cowl vent assembly. Replaced driver’s door skin. The Original door skin had previously been damaged which was not obvious until stripped. All removable items such as doors, hood, trunk lid, front fenders, and valances were stripped, treated, primed and painted off the car, then reinstalled. Quarter panels were painted on the on the car. Ninety percent of all chrome, stainless, and aluminum trim parts removed from car went back on the car as Original or NOS. Remaining 10% consisted of Reproduction steel style wheels, outside/inside door handles, outside mirrors and bumpers. Replaced all hardware (nuts, bolts, washers and screws) with Reproduction; manufactured to replicate Original factory hardware. All running gear and components associated with running gear, and panels, that can be identified by tags or stamping are Ford Original and were returned to car. Replaced following with Reproduction: A/C condenser and compressor, A/C dryer and hoses, alternator, starter relay, starter, ignition coil, convertible top circuit breaker, voltage regulator, ignition wiring, tail light wiring harness, neutral safety switch, radiator and wheels and tires. Power steering booster, duel master cylinder and proportion valve. Gas tank with sensor, entire exhaust system from manifold to tail pipe, rear brakes, shocks, wheels and all lower front-end parts associated with steering, such as control arms with ball joints, tie rods, etc., etc. Fuel, transmission coolant, and brake lines with stainless steel. Replaced following with NOS: Dash Pad, tail light bezels, quarter panels and quarter panel ornaments, head light wire harness, brake and turn signal wire harness and wheel center caps. Reinstalled following with Original: Rally Pac, simulated wood grain steering wheel, full console, A/C evaporator, all glass, inside day/night mirror, door lights, power top motor, cylinders, switch and wiring harness, radio, instrument cluster, heater and glove box door – also includes all dash mounted switches and controls and under dash wire harness. All torque wrench accessible nuts and bolts were torqued to factory specifications. FEATURES: Tires, while mounted on the car, were “trued” then “balanced” using spin-balancing method. Unless you have access to a lug eccentric balance, then the spin balancing method is the only way to get a true balance on vintage and reproduction wheels such as those currently mounted on this car. Note: Should this method and justification of this method need further explanation, then Scott Drake (manufacture of reproduction Ford parts) or any of the companies selling classic and vintage tires and wheels should be willing to fill you in on their recommended method of balancing. Actual mileage cannot be verified due to lack of documentation and the fact that the speedometer was rolled back to zero during restoration. Mileage indicated at time of engine rebuilt was 46,000 and current indicated mileage is 4,376. Accompanying the car: are over 200 pictures related to the restoration process, trophies and 3 lbs.of invoices and trophies. Instrument Cluster was restored using all original parts with exception of bezel. The three gauges that contain zero and span adjustments were calibrated to factory specs. The fourth (amp) gauge is not made to be calibrated. SUMMARY: If classic cars are your passion and a 66 Mustang is what you have in mind, then you may need to look no further. This car is best described, by car show spectators and participants, as being the “nicest mustang they have seen”. However, if this is not the nicest 66 Mustang you have seen it may just replace one of those on your top five lists. This car is very clean on the underside despite the miles accumulated following the restoration. Also, there are no dings nor rock chips. The current 4376 miles, as indicated on the odometer, are from commuting to and from car shows over the last 6 years on Farm-to-Market roads, all within a 100 a mile radius of home. Texas F&M roads are better kept than its Interstates and four-lane highways. . In no way do I imply that this car meets, nor was ever meant to meet, Concours quality. It is an excellent show car that has placed in every car show it has entered. I have no basis on which to classify the car as to condition, therefore my uneducated guess places it as a number 2 on a 1 to 5 scale, where number one is close to meeting Concours requirements. This car started restoration as basically a rust-free car and ends restoration as a rust-free car. I have exercised the option to Reserve, but at a reasonable value; a value based on current current condition and auctions selling same year Mustangs of what I would consider of lessor value. I have described this vehicle as honest and as comprehensive as I know how. I provided detail where detail is not normally provided in order to achieve a smooth and satisfying transaction for both the bidder and myself by providing information sufficient to where the winning bidder has little to no chance of experiencing disappointment. BIDDING I reserve the right to reject those I consider having excessive negative feedback or those that have ZERO feedback. If you have negative feedback or you have ZERO feedback, please contact me prior to bidding. Bidding will be in accordance with all e-bay rules and anyone not following the rules will be rejected and negative feedback may be submitted. I reserve the right to end this bid at any time prior to the actual bid meeting the reserve. Once the reserve has been met I will not stop the bidding. CAUTION: I am the only one that can offer a Second Chance Option on this car – if not offered by me then the offer doesn’t exist. If you are planning to finance, verify that financing is available prior to placing bid as not all financial institutions will finance a vehicle of this vintage. The bidder enters a binding contract when placing the final and winning bid. There will be very, very, few acceptable excuses for not completing this transaction. An unexcused non-paying high bidder will be reported to eBay through proper channels and negative feedback will be submitted. DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING, if there is something you are not sure of, ASK ME. Good communication is the key to making this transaction seamless. If you have a question please ASK; if it is important to you, then it is also important to me. What you see listed is what is being sold, nothing more, nothing less. This car is being sold AS-IS with no warranty expressed, written or implied.Inspection prior to end of auction is the responsibility of potential buyer. If you, the bidder, lack the expertise to conduct a thorough inspection I suggest you use a responsible second party that can. I would rather not make a sell then make one that is unsatisfactory. Remember that once the reserve is made the car is officially sold.Pictures and written and verbal communication, as you should know, are poor substitutes for a visual inspection.Visual inspection ensures buyer gets exactly what he/she paid for and for me it increases the odds of a sale. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A VISUAL INSPECTION. If for whatever reason you should elect to bid and purchase, without an inspection, I am confident by having owned this car for 40 years and having been personally involved in the restoration that my description is accurate and you will not be disappointed; however, this statement does not imply warranty of any kind. Car is located within 20 min of the San Antonio International Airport therefore easily accessible. I will make myself available to help in any way I can. Please make your bid in accordance with your expectations. If your expectations are high, and you bid accordingly, I am sure you won’t be disappointed -have fun and good luck.
