Up for auction is this 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL The Paul Bracq-designed Mercedes-Benz 113 series succeeded both the 190SL and 300SL and made its public debut at the 1963 Geneva Auto Show. The first model, the 230SL, was a comfortable, well-equipped and compact two-seat sports touring machine that provided better performance than the 190SL. Instantly recognizable by virtue of their unique and strong detachable hardtop design, the cars were colloquially known as "Pagodas". The 280SL was introduced in 1967 and powered by a new 2.8-litre (2778cc) six-cylinder engine that produced 180bhp, 20 horsepower more than the preceding 250SL's. The 280 SL, with its effortless power delivery has become the most sought-after of SL's. This is a rare example of the 'California Coupe', an Air Conditioned 2+2 version (first introduced on the 250SL) that came with a rear bench seat occupying the space hitherto reserved for the convertible top. A removable hardtop provides the weather protection. Supplied new to Janet Griffith of Northridge, California (who enjoyed it for about 5 years and then had serious health issues) it was subsequently put in to long term storage (with about 51,000 miles) where it was maintained but remained for about 30 years, until 2005. It was then acquired by its Second Owner who immediately gave it a full mechanical service and a mild cosmetic restoration. It was at that time that it received its only repaint (since new) in its correct factory color using single stage paint. He has enjoyed the 280SL for the past 5 or 6 years putting on about 1000 miles per year. It has a total of 59,204 Original Miles since new as documented in the Warranty Book. It comes with a cosmetic European Plate on the front and a retro California Black Plate on the rear. It is not often we come across what we describe as a quality low mile "righteous" car which is so apparent in many ways on this SL. They are only original ONCE! As mentioned this SL has had one repaint since new (about 10 years ago) in single stage paint and in its correct Factory Color. The Exterior Paint is in very nice condition with few if any flaws. The door, hood and trunk jambs are still the Original Factory paint. This 280SL has absolutely perfect panel fitment and gaps throughout and has no evidence that it has ever experienced any body damage. It is all Original sheet metal. The factory rivets show along the edge of the inner fenders along hood area and the small factory indentations by the headlight bezels are clearly visible. The rockers, quarters and floor pan and chassis are all rust free and solid as one would expect from a low mile, dry Original California car. There is hardly even a jack ding or crease on the floor pans. It even has what appears to be the Original Factory installed Exhaust system!! All the Exterior brightwork, chrome and emblems appears to be original to the car and are in very respectable condition. The rear bumper has one small dent on the upper passenger side above the exhaust tailpipe and that is the only exterior fault we could find. We wont get into the discussion on how that happened by our staff but will assist the new owner (if its an overseas buyer) in getting that replaced or repaired and replated. The Alloy Wheels have Factory correct tires (185R14) and the spare tire along with Jack appear to be Original. The glass is all in great condition and it still has it Original Factory Windshield. LOCATED IN BEAUTIFUL PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA SELLING NO RESERVE!!! The Interior is all Original to the car and is in very presentable condition given its age. The Seats and Door Panels do not have any rips or tears which is remarkable after almost 50 years of existence but testify to the low mileage of this 280SL. The carpet even appears Original to the car. The wood trim along the inner edge of the windshield and the wood on the center console are all in great shape. The dash pad is in great shape! The Dash Bezels and trim pieces all gleam like new. The Dealer installed Mercedes Benz Fridiking Air Conditioning comes with its Original Bill of Sale and Warranty/Operating Book and information. The AC blows cool but not cold. The Factory Radio is not operating. The Interior lights work along with the glove box light. The horn, gauges, tach, speedo, signal lights all operate as they should.
