Vehicle Detail

It's quite an odd story about the man who owned this 1977 Firebird Espirit Skybird. 1 of 5269 that Pontiac ever made. Most had V6's. You could get them with 305 V8's. This one was ordered with a 350 V8 4 barrel. He picked it up from Ray Steidle Pontiac in Milford, Ohio on March 18, 1977. He was still the owner when he died at 87 years old last November. When he passed away he had no wife, no kids, no immediate family. Second cousins were his closest relatives. He rarely sold anything he ever owned. In 1977 he put the new Firebird in his garage next to his Caddy and he and his late wife drove it on weekends to go to NASCAR races. A race on Saturday and church wherever that race was on Sunday. There was a box of photos in his house documenting all the races and churches they traveled to on these weekend trips. In 1987, he went to a new car dealership and bought a brand new sports car. The Firebird then got moved to the driveway, where it sat for 6 years. In 1993 he talked a friend of his into letting him put the Firebird inside the belly of a warehouse the friend owned on Beekman Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. The friend agreed. The man also had a 60's Riviera which was already being stored in the warehouse. The man surprised his friend by giving him the Riviera for agreeing to let him also put the Firebird there. When the original owner drove this Firebird into the warehouse almost a quarter of a century ago it had 8073 actual miles. That is where the car still rested the day the old man died. Also when he died that high end sports car was still garaged in his home under a custom cover. The sports car was in absolute showroom condition. I was lucky enough to be able to buy both of these cars from this man's estate. However I bought them 5 months apart. I talked to Richard Rawlings at Gas Monkey Garage and he snapped up the sports car. The sports car was never advertised. Since I bought these 5 months apart I didn't have the Firebird yet when Richard bought the other car. Otherwise I would have offered them both to Richard at the same time. So here it is on eBay. If you watch the new movie "The Nice Guys" set in 1977 with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, a porno star crashes an exact one of these Skybird's thru a house in the first two minutes of the movie. The mileage on this car is absolutely actual, 100% complete and original except the Lombard blue western snowflake wheels were mysteriously stolen 15 years ago. The previous owner had his godson procure and install spare wheels and tires from a junkyard so that the car could still be rolled. After I bought this car I located a vintage Firebird and Trans Am parts collector in Detroit. Fortunately he owned four original 1977 western snowflakes (in gold) and he sold them to me. They can easily be refinished to Lombard blue as this is how GM issued the factory blue wheels for these cars, by painting silver ones. All four wheels go with this car. The fluids held up on the car during storage, the oil looks good and all the antifreeze is there. The dry warehouse was partially heated in winter and relatively cool in summer. So it sat in a particle board room cocoon. Have not even thought about getting it running as that was never my goal. I have no interest in restoring old cars and bought this for it's originality, collector appeal and unique history. The car is major cancer free but the six years (1987-1993) this sat outside in the elements started some minor surface rust near trim pieces. The hood will need replaced or refinished because of significant rust. The car was covered with industrial heavy gray dust as you can tell from the pictures. Some of thick dust has been transferred to the interior so it's dirty inside, but should clean up. There were employees at this warehouse over many years who had curious interest and access to the car so doors got opened and it experienced some idle unauthorized "foot traffic." Dirt yes, actual wear no. The car hadn't seen sun for 23 years so no cracks or any problems with interior plastics, dash or armrest. The headliner fabric gave up at some point during its storage and came down. Still has a vintage Hustler CB antenna mounted on the trunk. It is a factory AC car. Original everything including steering wheel, shift knob, radio etc. Overall it's a original find from hoarder owner of peculiar mindset. One other cool thing on this car, you can lightly swing the heavy coupe doors and they close smooth and perfect. Unheard of on a 1977 two-door GM with it's original factory hinges. I have both sets of factory keys. All the books and manuals. Every shred of original paperwork. A copy of the original Ohio title which was still active just months ago. Copies of the estate paperwork and signed judge's order to allow the car to be legally sold from the estate. The current Ohio title is in my name free and clear. The car has now been professionally towed to a secure farm in Northern Kentucky and is sitting inside a big dry barn. If anyone wins this auction the deposit is $200 and that can be done via Paypal.
