One of Ford's first "halo" cars, it not only had the U.S. giant's engineering support, but also was sold through Ford's Lincoln-Mercury dealerships. Successor of the equally exotic, Giugiaro-designed Mangusta, reportedly 5,629 units of the Pantera were only sold in the U.S. from 1971 to 1974. With an original MSRP of $9,800.00, it was the most affordable super-exotic on the market. They say Ford lost money on every Pantera ever made--but what a car it was! Its Tom Tjaarda-penned Carrozzeria Ghia design combined sexiness with the look of brute force. With its hunkered-down stance and mid-engine layout, to many enthusiasts it seemed like a Le Mans racer for the street. Definitely in one league with the finest mediterranean supercars of the era, such as Lamborghini Countach, Maserati Bora, and Ferrari Daytona, the Pantera's price of admission and service was--and still is--markedly lower. The "Lusso" (luxury) Pantera L was introduced in August 1972 and featured many factory upgrades and updates that fixed the issues the earlier cars experienced. A redesigned dash going from two separate pods for the gauges to a unified unit with the dials angled towards the driver. Larger (black) bumpers met US safety standards with the single front bumper incorporating a built-in airfoil to reduce front end lift at high speeds. The car was so improved that the 1973 DeTomaso Pantera was Road Test Magazine’s Import car of the year beating out Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and Porsche. Sadly, over the years, most of these supercars were butchered and molested beyond return so finding a clean, stock (or sensibly upgraded) example would like discovering a needle in a haystack. Here’s one! This 1974 DeTomaso Pantera has certainly lived a charmed life. Born in Modena, Italy and raised in sunny California, it was always properly garaged and has never been subject to rain, snow, hail, or any kind of inclement weather, explaining its almost unreal state of preservation. It's a true low-mileage vehicle, too! Its mature, Pantera-enthusiast owner for the past 35 years travelled less than 700 miles annually, on average, for a total of only 27,778 actual miles in 42 years. To call this car a cherished toy, driven on sunny Sundays only, would almost be an understatement! This survivor comes with its original owner's manual and is fully documented with records detailing all the meticulous maintenance and sensible improvements made from his 30+ years ownership. Let's have a closer look now, beginning with the DeTomaso's stunnung body. Rust-and accident free, the ultra-glossy Pantera's all-steel coachwork is arrow-straight and still features nearly 100% of its original bright red finish, never having suffered a color change like so many of its brethren. There are a few small paint blemishes here and there which are near impossible to detect in these photos. All rubber trim, including glass and door weather stripping, is original and in excellent condition. Stunning from any angle. Road wheels are the original, super attractive CAMPAGNOLO cast magnesium units, 7x15s up front and 10”x15 in the rear. Tires are fresh BF Goodrich Radials; front ones, size 225/50R15, the rear ones of the size 275/60R15. While we’re down on one knee, let’s have a look underneath. More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage. Pictures above nicely show the power-coated exhaust and the race car derived, independent rear suspension with aluminum A-arms and coil-over shocks. Here's a view that's of utmost importance to every Pantera aficionado. It shows the pristine original unibody chassis, floors, and rocker panels. This is definitely not one of the many Panteras suffering corrosion from the inside out, due to improper care or storage. There is no rust or acid damage to the battery box area whatsoever, which is another amazing feat. Furthermore, the car's body, front trunk, rockers, and firewall are all rust free. The upgraded cooling system includes stainless steel tubing, high output fans and a 180° thermostat. Rack-and-pinion steering and 4-wheel disc brakes were part of the factory package. How about a peek inside the trunk? Immaculate, carpeted front trunk compartment features new factory correct master brake cylinder, servo and battery. Everything looks ready for show competition. Now let’s inspect the interior. Enter the cozy cockpit and you can smell the fully upgraded leather upholstery covering most every surface; including the bucket seats, door panels, center console, dash fascia and sun visors. All new plush, cut pile carpet and headliner complete this spectacular upgraded interior. DeTomaso branded floor mats protect the carpets. Prior to the new upholstery, full Dynomat insulation was installed throughout The French made, Lecarra steering wheel with leather-grip is certainly an upgrade and feels much better as well. All gauges were removed, refurbished and replaced. The power rear hatch can be activated by both the bottom rocker switch on the console and remote FOB. Click links to see videos as the ^ arrow operates the “up” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spvlepaS_P4 and v arrow operates the “down” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAPeLYAKXnM for the power rear hatch. The clunky, (sideways) radio was deleted from the console and now features a hidden novero Bluetooth audio system that integrates your smartphone with upgraded speakers in the original factory locations. Now hands-free phone calls can be made and music synced from your Bluetooth capable smartphone, MP3 player or tablet. The sound is amazing, even at speeds well above double nickel. The shift gate was changed to a one gate option to distinguish reverse from all the forward gears. The owner of 30+ years maintains, "Once you know where to shift, the gate just gets in the way." All the equipment--gauges, switches, heating, fans, power windows, headlight motors, and electrical—works perfectly. Air conditioning has been serviced / updated to R134a refrigerant and it blows ICE COLD. Aside from one miniscule crack which is too small to photograph, the original dash top is perfect and free of any warpage or stains. Dash fascia was covered in matching black leather with the same pattern to match the seat inserts. This highly upgraded interior with optional 3-point seat belts speaks volumes about the care that was taken to preserve the original look and feel of this period supercar. Okay, let’s open the power rear hatch and see what’s inside. The immaculate rear compartment features a cargo net with Dynomat insulation and carpeted, removable floor. Now let’s remove that floor section and inspect the power plant. Engine & Mechanical: Equally clean is the engine compartment. Drivetrain is a delight to see, feel, and hear. It’s the original, 351 cubic inch Ford Cleveland V8, fitted with a Holley 700cfm carburetor, sending over 300 lively horses to a stout German ZF five-speed transaxle. Motorized power hatch struts are seen on each side. The matching-numbers 351C V8 was recently pulled to check condition and the heads were rebuilt, the engine was completely resealed and dyno serviced. Approximately 10 years ago, the #’s matching ZF 5-speed transaxle was rebuilt and new updated half-shafts, a new clutch disk, pressure plate and throw-out bearing were installed. The car has covered fewer than 2,000 miles since. Here is the DYNO SHEET for the Pantera performed at Superior Automotive. The Blue Line is AFTER the tune-up and the red line is BEFORE the tune up. Focusing on the Blue Line we see: 276.59 horsepower to the rear wheels and 309.63 foot pounds of torque to the rear wheels. According to the technician at the dyno, these figures are equal to having about 320 horsepower at the motor and 350 foot pounds of torque. This is very impressive to say the least. The sweet spot for all the power and torque is between 4500 and 5250 RPM which is perfect for everyday driving in the 2500 to 4000 RPM range where the best TORQUE CURVE is on this motor. The powder coated headers and exhaust sound incredible. Note the original, muy-macho four tip exhaust. Kept in superior tune, the big V8 starts instantly and revs smoothly from idle all the way to its 6,000 rpm redline. You're free to run around town all day; she'll never get hot, even during a 100-degree heat wave, as the cooling system was upgraded. Coolant hoses new as well. There are no leaks of any kind to report--driveline is as clean underneath as it is on top. All in all, this Pantera is as strong mechanically as it is cosmetically. Drivability Driving this unique Pantera is a revelation! After letting the engine and transmission fluids warm up respectfully, shifting through the gears is 100% smooth without any grinding or whine to be heard. The 2,900-pound car accelerates exceedingly well: one will never be able to probe its potential top speed on a U.S. highway. This Pantera starts, runs, drives, turns, and stops extremely well. Its chassis integrity speaks for itself, as it is virtually void of squeaks and rattles. The low mileage will really become evident when exercising this wonderful machine! And you’ll draw plenty of admiring looks from other motorists; young and old flock to the car whenever you park it. Except during the Pebble Beach Concorso Italiano perhaps, you'll not see another Pantera like this one on the road. 1974 was the final year for the Pantera, as it brought many mechanical upgrades. Don’t get trapped spending upward of $70,000.00 trying to buy a cheap example without much history or, worse yet, rust, and then attempting a restoration! Save yourself the time, frustration, and money. If you are looking for a pedigreed DeTomaso Pantera which requires no work at all, this one's the automobile for you. This true low mileage, reliable example of Ford's Italian connection is ready to be enjoyed. Look at it as a fun investment, as prices for heirloom-quality examples of 1960s/70s supercars will certainly continue their phenomenal ascent. There's but one stumbling block on the way to De Tomaso heaven: Pristine, rust free, unmolested examples almost never come to market. All the more reason to watch this one closely... On Jun-22-16 at 18:08:05 PDT, seller added the following information: Here is the documentation for the engine-out service performed at Superior Automotive in 2010: Over the past 35+ years, there was nearly $60,000 in mechanical/cosmetic work performed to this Pantera. We have not (yet) located the complete file of service records at this time. We do have the original Owner’s Manual, recent work by Superior Automotive and sufficient documentation verifying one owner for 35 years. The owner recalls (some 30 years ago) he sent the car to Hall Pantera in Paramount, CA to be stripped and re-painted to a very high quality in its original red color. If/when we locate ANY additional document(s) which further testifies over 3 decades of extensive services, provenance, etc., they will be forwarded to the new owner.
