This is a 1989 VW Jetta with a Non-Turbo Charged 1.6L 4 cylinder diesel engine. This is a decent candidate for restoration or use it for parts for another car. This car hasn't been driven since October 2008 but The engine has been cranked every 2 or 3 months. This is an old car so there are many things probably wrong with it but here are the highlights of what I know about its condition. The engine: - It runs. - The fuel return lines are leaking and need replacing. - The thermostat isn’t working. It appears to be stuck open. A piece of cardboard in front of the radiator will allow the engine to reach operating temperature during cold weather. - There is no battery in the car at present. The Chassis: - There is rust underneath and the surface, one of the fuel tank straps has rusted off, the other looks as though it isn’t far behind. I couldn’t get any decent pictures because the car is so low to the ground. General stuff: - The seats are in decent shape for the age but do need cleaning. The driver seat has more wear than the others, after all it has had someone sitting in it for 287k miles. - All the tires need replacing. - As you can see from the pictures, there is body rust. The paint on the car is a do-it-yourself paint job from the previous owner. I know very little about body work but I believe most of the panels can be used with some Bondo work. - All the glass is in good shape; however the gaskets around the windshield and rear window are not. Both windows leak badly. - The marker light and tail light lenses are intact. However, driver side tail light and passenger side front turn signal does have a crack but it doesn’t seem to go all the way through and the driver side turn signal has some discoloration. - The driver side rear door will not open. Something dislodged or broke inside the door. I never bothered to get it opened it since I don’t use it. - As may be expected with a car this old. There are some electrical issues. The windshield wipers will sometimes come on while driving. I found grounding the hand break indicator light eliminated this problem. Click here to see more pictures.
