I am not the guy from Graveyard Cars who knows the part number for every nut and bolt of every Mopar car ever built! So, if you want to know why there are no holes in the right front fender for the Chrysler script, I am not the person to ask. Here however is what I do know...................... This beautiful and rare car was was purchased by myself from an elderly eclectic automobile collector from Modena NY, a tiny town north of Newburgh by about 20 miles over a year ago together with a 1965 Elderado convertible. With its subtle chrome topped fins and classic lines it shows well from all angles. Both cars sat on flat tires in a dust filled barn well protected from the ravages of Orange County winters. Neither had been registered in this century, nor had they run for as many years. After digging them out and transporting them to my house in Bedford Village, I took my time trying to figure out what to do next. Here is what I have done, and what yet needs to be done. The Newport was found to have fundamentally a strong engine and drive train. This car was built with a 361 cubic inch engine 5.9 Liter, producing 265 HP, 2 barrel Bendix Stromberg mated to a Torque flight 3 speed automatic. This is a matching numbers car with all of its original components. The motor was massaged to life after a 20 year hibernation. It was necessary to replace the carberator as the original leaked. I was able to purchase an NOS OEM Bendix Stomberg and had it installed. ( the original carb is included with the purchase) The Carter Fuel pump was replaced. The fuel tank was cleaned as well as the lines and a Hastings filter insured clean fresh high test to feed our engine. The motor was warmed and an engine flush additive was dumped in. After an appropriate amount of run in time the oil and filter were drained. 7 quarts of Castrol GTX 20/50 non detergent topped off the sump. Plugs were renewed with period correct Champions. We added a fresh battery and fired this tired old girl right up! Coolant has proper color and circulates well. Heat is abundant. Brake fluid topped off, even windshield washer fluid! A word about this 361ci. This is the predecessor to the 383 which was introduced the next year. Do not confuse this block with a 340 or a 360. They are smaller engines. This is a very desirable drive train and will run well on todays fuels. The car is otherwise as it was put away in 1997. It sounds great, the power steering is flawless, the push button 3 speed brings you up to speed in seconds and away you go. 1964 introduced a park gear as well. The tires must have been new 20 years ago and show no signs of dry rot or soft spots. Even the nipples still are in evidence. The car happens to ride extraordinarily well. This is why there is such a following for 60s Mopar. They really are phenomenal machines. Okay, now the bad news. There is rust, but not an insurmountable amount. This is not a Flinstone mobile. Oddly enough the trunk is rust free as well as the front floors. Usually the drivers floor is the first to go thru to the ground. But not on this car. Even the original carpets are in respectable condition. The worst areas of rust include a small section of the lower left front quarter, both rear lower quarters but not the trunk pan and both rear floors behind the front seat. I feel that there must have been a failure of the convertible top years ago and water sat on the rear floors. The chrome is original to the car and can be worked with. The hub caps are Chrysler, 10 years newer than the car! I am currently searching for the correct ones as well as the front Chrysler emblems. The paint is original. The id plate is in the drivers door jam and confirms the authenticity of the car. Of course the next owner will probably want o use this car as a sound platform for a restoration as this is an accident free car. I however would not. I would replace the top, repair the bench bottoms and just have fun with it! It is rare to find an original interior convertible. What do you think? Since the time of posting the ad I have located a correct pair of front fender scripts. I have not seen them (an ebay purchase!) however they are originals, not repop stuff. There is an old Greek expression, Free is better than Cheap! and they will be included to the buyer with the car. As i mentioned, the hubcaps are from a 1974 Valiant. Go figure. NG. I have purchased one correct hub cap and am trying to complete the set without spending a fortune. I will post updates as time passes. Remember that this is a no reserve auction. Yes, I was successful in purchasing last night a matching set of 4 OEM 14" Hubcaps for the Newport. The car will definitely look proper with these in place. I will include the correct ones and the ones pictured in the sale of the car. I should also be able to mount the divers side Script as soon as the pair arrive. As for the right side Chrysler emblem, as you notice from the photos, there are no holes? I will let you add that to the work you have to do! PS. The heater, defroster and wipers all work well. It was cold and raining yesterday morning when i took it out. I was asked if the vintage New York State Plates go with the car at the time of the sale. We can talk about it! Good luck. Not a big number to begin with. This is a one-off year and is vastly different from the 1965. Hagerty Classic Car Insurance which follows all auctions and updates values regularly estimates that only 20 to 30% of these units produced survive today in any way shape or form. This number decreases with total looses, fires and cars which are either stolen or leave the US for markets abroad. In #4 condition, which I feel to be a fair appraisal of mine, they company substantiates a value of $14500. Number 2 values over 30k, and Number 1 out of sight! With an original sale price of $3520 in 1964 it was not cheap. The top speed is 118 mph, and in 1964 powered with the 361, it won the prestigious Mobil Engine of the Year Award producing 20 miles to the gallon in an era were 8 was the norm! On Nov-23-15 at 14:05:44 PST, seller added the following information: I have been asked several questions about the convertible top. Yes, it appears to be original. And yes, it is totally shot! The original top material is called Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl. The convertible was offered in 2 colors. Black or white. Mine came black. The list cost of a new OEM top is $320 w/o the labor of installation. I recommend that you go to the website for Convertible Top Guys CTG. There, you will get a total understanding of what is involved. The framework and cables however are perfect. The hydraulics work perfectly. The top goes up rapidly and returns as swiftly. Given the deterioration and shrinkage of this old one, the top requires some stretching to make the final clasping to the windshield frame. Both the chrome strip attached to the top and the upper windshield chrome are immaculate. The boot is also shot, however the tub that the top sits into is fine and original. I was asked why the top is black, and the boot is white. Answer is, I don't know. As they both appear to be original, it is curious to me as well. Perhaps because the interior is both black and white, this is how they were produced, black top with a white boot. Ask the guy from Graveyard Cars, and if you find out, tell me! My Eldorado has a white convertible top and I can tell you that every bird in the world seems to aim for it. Not a pretty site. Not easy to keep clean!
