Vehicle Detail

This 2003 BMW 540iA M Sport is a great car. The car was hit in the rear driver’s side tail light. M pars available, as described below at extra cost. Car accelerates, cruises and brakes normally, with no unusual pulling, pushing, wobble or rubbing. No warning lights (other than “trunk open” and “check brake lights”); No check engine lights. No SRS light. No air bag deployed. All doors open and close properly. This is an adult owned and maintained car and has not been raced, auto crossed or abused. Engine: Oil changed on accelerated basis (every 7,500 miles). Engine is clean, dry and does not smoke, leak, knock or make any unusual sounds. Entire cooling system changed as preventative measure within last 2 years, flushed 4 months ago; engine has never over heated. Spark plugs changed 2 years ago (just to prevent getting stuck in engine block). Burns no oil. During my ownership I have also replaced the water pump, alternator (liquid cooled), both fuel senders, and both horns. The valley pan replacement was done by BMW about 4 years ago and, in the process, replaced a 2-page list of gaskets. Have only used high-test gasoline. Used techron [sic] before each oil change. All parts are BMW original parts from the dealer. Almost all of the work has been done at dealerships and reciepts are available for inspection by the buyer. Transmission: Replaced by BMW with a BMW remanufactured unit (i.e.: built by BMW in Germany) at about 43,000 miles for $8,300. Functions flawlessly. Guibo replaced. The transmission has the manual override, but I do not use it, other than to operate it occasionally to keep it lubricated -- I used it for this listing and it works fine. Receipt from BMW dealership is available for inspection by buyer. Paint: Paint is routinely washed, clayed and waxed. It is not polished and ground down to no or thin clear coat. As you’ll see in the pictures, the paint looks fantastic and that is without oil-based fillers to hide imperfections. There are abrasions, dings and other imperfections consistent with a car with this milage, as shown in the pictures and as you can see in an inspection. Lights: Xenon lights with “halo” all work as shown in pictures and all are original BMW parts, not some aftermarket look-a-like. Fogs were replaced by BMW with new units about 2 years ago (they were foggy) and work as shown in photographs. Battery is about 7 months old. Car starts the first time, every time, even after sitting for a week when it was 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Interior. Good condition. Black leather sport seats, heated; all functions work. Leather treated every summer with BMW leather conditioner. No burned out pixels in display or on radio, as shown in pictures. AC is cold. Heat is hot. Harmon Kardon 13 speaker hi-fi option, including the BMW DSP amp and subwoofer all work. Never smoked in. Carpets look great, although need some vacuuming. The BMW original carpet mats are also in good condition as they’ve always been covered by rubber mats, which are also included in this sale. As shown in the pictures, interior trim is silver. However, I have from BMW a complete, matching set of wood trim that originally came with the car that is in NEW condition, which includes ALL of what is silver, including the shifter, center console, ash tray, the entire dash, CD cover, and all the doors. These are the sets now sold on ebay for about $900. At the time BMW ordered 3 complete sets so I could pick the one where all the pieces matched. This wood trim set will be provided with the car at no additional cost and is shown in the pictures. Brakes: Rotors, pads and sensors at all 4 wheels replaced within last year by BMW dealership with all BMW parts. Fluid flushed at least every 2 years. Tires: Matching Dunlops with significant tread, with no plugs or patches; even wear across tread. Tires are filled with nitrogen. Wheels: As shown in the picture of each wheel, there is no damage or curb rash. All hub covers with the BMW logo are in place and included. They are filled with nitrogen. The set of forged, staggered 18” M-pars that originally came with the car are NOT sold with this BMW and are NOT included in this auction. The M-pars will be sold in a separate auction, with the the Pilot A/S tires that are near new mounted. If the winning bidder of this auction for the BMW also wins the auction for the M-pars and pays for the M-pars as required in that auction prior to picking up this BMW, I will refund $400 from the down payment you made on the purchase price of this car if you take the M-Pars when you pickup the car. This approach means the buyer of this BMW gets to buy the m-pars at $400 less than fair market value as determined by an open and free auction. What is included in the sale: Keys: I have one master and one valet key, as shown in picture. Both keys work as intended. I have another master that I can’t find at this time, so it is not part of the sale, but if you want me to provide it to you if and when I find it I will do so. Wood interior set: Complete wood trim set, as shown in picture, including shifter and console, all matching, in new condition, all as described in “interior” section above. Original tool set, as provided by BMW in the trunk. Original jack, unused. Original spare rim. The spare rim is a full-size rim that is new with a new tire, which is likely original to the original delivery date. The spare rim is not an m-par as the spare area isn’t big enough for them and they are staggered, so you wouldn’t be sure which size you need, at least that’s what was explained by the dealership. Floor mats (BMW carpets), in great condition, as explained above. Rubber floor mats. Spare parts. I carried various things as spares, including a wiper insert, bulb, screws, backup locking switch and emergency blinkers switch (so if a drink spills on the console and the installed ones short you can use these). New ashtray -- the old one was never used, but this came with the trim. New cubby for the center console. Whatever was in the car goes with the car. Sales literature from when I bought the car, as shown in the picture. BMW DVD titled "a guide to features and operation." The right to buy the forged m-par wheels at a $400 discount to fair market value as described exclusively in the red text. Service receipts from about 25 service visits to BMW dealerships going back to 2007 are available for buyer's inspection, including the receipt for the replacement BMW transmission by BMW. Damage: If you are good with body work or know someone that is good, this may be an excellent car for you. The rear tail light is available on ebay for $50 from two different sellers. I’m told that the car needs (among other things) a rear tail light and bumper cover (there’s one for sale on ebay now for $135), but I was told the car does not need a new floor. Wire components and wiring behind where it got hit were not damaged. Trunk lid can be re-used. The muffler does not appear to be leaking, but needs a new brackets to hold it up. Body work / hammering and painting, obviously. Title: Title to this car is clean and in hand. I will sign it over to the winning bidder when the car is picked up and paid for in full, listing the verified buyer's name on the title. All taxes and fees due to the DMV are the responsibility of the buyer. Key Terms: Although I have tried to explain what I know about this car based on having owned it for 8 years, this is an as is, where is sale with no express or implied warranties or representations of any kind. The only thing I can represent is that I took the pictures of the car you will be buying as shown in this auction. Since the car was in an accident, I can’t be sure that what I’ve described about the car still applies, so it explicitly does not apply. Accordingly, I encourage you to inspect the vehicle prior to bidding and in bidding rely solely on the pictures and your inspection; by bidding on this car without inspecting the car you acknowledge that you are knowingly waiving your right to inspect the car. As shown in the pictures, no “check engine” lights are lit or any warning lights, other than check brakes and rear lights (yes, these lights illuminate when you turn the key). What you see is what you get -- it is a 12 year old car and wear and tear consistent with its milage should be expected and, again, inspect the car. The car drives fine. Necessary repairs and part location are the buyer's responsibility. Purchaser acknowledges that the vehicle is sold in damaged condition. The vehicle may have hidden or latent damages and/or defects. It is the buyers responsibility to fully inspect or have the car fully inspected prior to bidding. Your bid constitutes a legally binding contract to purchase this vehicle. By bidding on this auction, you are agreeing to all of the terms I have listed. Within 4 hours of the end of the auction, the winning bidder is required to make a $500 payment via PayPal. The balance of the purchase price is due in CASH at time of pick up, which shall in no event be more than 4 calendar days after the auction ends. If the $500 payment is not made as contemplated herein and the car is not picked up within 4 calendar days after the auction ends, buyer has no further rights of any kind, forfeits the deposit and agrees that I may relist the car and sell it with no obligation to offset or refund any deposit and any payment for the car. Car is located in Norwalk Connecticut. Cash means United States Currency, not any form of bank instrument, money order, certified check, IOU or anything else. Buyer and seller will both provide appropriate feedback at time buyer takes possession of car as that is when all obligations between buyer and seller will cease. The terms set forth in this written description supersede anything to the contrary set forth in this auction. Car is also for sale locally and I reserve the right to cancel this auction at any time. On Jan-17-15 at 22:19:50 PST, seller added the following information: Update to description: The BMW forged 18 inch staggered M-Pars parallels wheels rims, part no. 3611 2 229 640 & 3611 2 229 635 are now listed in another auction on eBay item number: 141545355789. Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-forged-18-inch-staggered-M-Pars-parallels-wheels-rims-3611-2-229-640-635-/141545355789. Also, the BMW owner’s manual is now also included in this auction. On Jan-23-15 at 22:17:02 PST, seller added the following information: Given the interest in this car -- there are now 78 "watchers" -- and an overwhelming number of questions, here is more information to address various questions. Title: The insurance company of the driver that hit me agreed with me in writing to not report the car as totaled and I did not "buy it back" from them or anyone else and title and the car never left my possession, so it is my understanding that dmv will not and can not mark the title totaled, but please call dmv to satisfy yourself since I'm not an expert in this area. I was just issued a replacement title that is clean and the service ebay automatically put into this auction to report title issues lists no accidents, which you should check yourself. Service / repairs: I bought the car when it was still under the new car warranty and as a BMW certified car with an additional 2-year warranty from BMW. Then the car was under a comprehensive warranty from a third party to 100,000 miles. The battery is from Batteries Plus, which is the same battery made by the same manufacturer of the BMW battery, but with a higher specification -- I think higher cranking amps. The battery has a REPLACEMENT WARRANTY until 9/20/16. Starter was replaced in 2009 by BMW. Thrust arms replaced last year -- the bushings were worn; Greenwich BMW dealership in Port Chester NY replaced both arms. Alignment done at 106k miles by BMW dealership in Mt Kisko, NY to factory specifications. The high-pressure power steering hose and valve cover gaskets replaced in 2013 -- for $1,300 by BMW Greenwich in Port Chester. Car had a CD changer, but does not have the 6 CD changer now, although it is wired for it, has all the controls installed, and the changer itself sells on ebay for about $50. I plugged an Ipod adapter into the CD changer plug that allows the steering wheel to control the ipod with titles and songs appearing on the display on the instrument cluster and radio display. The interface unit plugs into the CD changer plug. No wires were cut or altered. You can plug a CD changer into the plug if you prefer. Dashboard is in great condition, with no cracks, scrapes, holes, etc. I don't think its even dusty. It is treated routinely with 303, never armor all, so it is not dried out. When outside I used a sun reflector. The car has been garaged almost its entire life. Seats are in good condition, consistent with a car of this age and milage. No holes, tears or burns. There is a scratch in the P/S back bolster on the part that holds you into the seat. All electronic functions work. Seat heaters work. Leg extensions work. Telephone. I had the BMW telephone module, antenna, microphone, and other hardware installed iand it worked flawlessly, with the ULF module being the same as used in the current BMW 5 series and pairing with a blackberry and iPhone with good phone control using the steering wheel controls. The car came pre-wired for the hardware and has not been altered, so you can add the hardware if you want (not including hardware in this auction). It plays through the stereo and with the external booster antenna the sound quality was terrific. Vapor barriers checked as preventative maintenance by my mechanic on a yearly basis and car has never leaked. Note that 2 other BMW 540s (one is not a 2003 so a different body and other features) listed on ebay now have plastic cans of desiccant shown in the pictures, undoubtedly to absorb the smell of mildew, with one even stating the car's floor gets wet -- do you want a car with mildew and smell in it? You'll never get it out. As for other possible comparables on ebay one prospective bidder asked me about, note how the steering wheel in other auctions is turned to cover the "check engine" light; if it was $100 to fix it be done, right? Of course it would. Ask them for the codes to find out how much those cars will cost to fix. Again, there are no warning lights obscured in my auction and I'm stating that there are none on my car. As for how this car handles, its repeatedly voted one of the best sport sedans of all time, with a 50/50 weight distribution, sublime handling, and much less to repair and insure than an M5, actually much, much less to insure. Only about 1,600 of the 2003 540 M-sports were imported by BMW, which is the only year that had various special cosmetic. features, which is rarer than an Aston and why more than 2,700 people have viewed this auction so far. For a good review of what this car is, check out Ken Rockwell's review of his 2003 BMW 540 Sport. Classic styling and it can be maintained for a very reasonable amount -- compare it to a new one and you'll see. With over 300 lb ft of torque in a relatively light body, at over 50 mph in the mountains the car shrinks around you and dances. Yes, its that good. As I find other things I may include them as presents for the buyer. For example, a new leather BMW key cover, which I left in the glove compartment.
