Vehicle Detail
Morgan automobiles have been a favorite of car enthusiasts and racers for many decades. Though they look antiquated and their engineering old fashioned, with their light weight combined with high horsepower, they are fast automobiles both on the street and track. The Plus 4 model of this time period used the Triumph TR2 and TR3 engine. This particular car has been modified for use in rally racing. Under the hood the first thing one notices if the HRG Engineering finned valve cover. HRG made their own automobile for a short time and was quite successful in racing. Subsequently, they modified other cars and engines. I havn't taken this engine apart and can only speculate but typically they would do some porting of the heads, oversized valves, higher compression, etc. The dash of this car had been fully modified for rally racing. First of all, the 16" Mota Lita steering wheel would come in handy for wresting this car thru sliding turns and power oversteer, the kind of driving one would be doing in a rally race. The dash has been modified with engine turned aluminum and hosts a CAV ignition kill switch, SW hour meter, map light, as well as a host of Jaeger and Smith instruments. This car has been sitting for a number of years and needs a full restoration. The metal body itself is in fairly good condition with some surface rust in places where the paint has chipped and some pinholes at the base of the doors and the adjoining running boards. I'm sure at the very least some of the wooden subframe will need repair or replacement. The car has sat for a number of years and will require work to recommission. The beauty of restoring a Morgan is how easily they are assembled. These cars have a metal body affixed to a wooden subframe which is then attached to a steel chassis. No need for a giant paint booth, giant media blaster, etc. These cars can be disassembled into each portion and any replacement parts needed can be made or ordered from a number of companies. Once restored into a period race rally car, it would be a joy to drive on the street, track, and rally events. Here are more pics.... http://smu.gs/1vUBWNs
