Vehicle Detail
This 1965 Mustang was purchased with the intention of participating in the Northwest Classic Rally over in Oregon. The car was rough and dirty when found, but ran so we picked it up and made it roadworthy in a few short weeks. You can read all the updates about what we did and spent BarnFinds.com: June 27, 2014 - Introducing Our New Project CarJuly 7, 2014 - NW Classic Rally Or BustJuly 10, 2014 - Making This Pony Shine!July 15, 2014 - Calling In ReinforcementsJuly 24, 2014 - NW Classic Rally: Day 1July 25, 2014 - NW Classic Rally: Day 2July 27, 2014 - NW Classic Rally: Day 3July 29, 2014 - Back HomeOctober 1, 2014 - Our Mustang Is For Sale! The car performed well on our 1,800 mile journey and we actually did decent in the rally too! Remember, this was a TSD rally held on public roads, not a full-out race. It was lots of fun because we had the opportunity to rub elbows with other enthusiasts who owned much more expensive machinery. The shabby paint and loud exhaust of our Ford made us look like rowdy outcasts when we first arrived, but after the initial shock wore off everyone took a liking to us. It truly was one of the most memorable automotive events I have ever had the pleasure of attending. Hopefully the next owner will be able to run the rally again next year! Our experience just goes to show you that you don't have to have a ton of money to have fun. Even with its lowly inline-six, this Mustang has garnered more attention from passerbys than any other classic I have ever owned. Everyone loves Mustangs! I love it too, but since our readers would get bored if we kept writing about the same cars over and over, we are ready for a new challenge. A lot of the important work has already been addressed, but there are a few things that I would recommend that the next owner focus on. You can read about everything we did to the car on our site, but I will try to make a list here along with what is left to do. What's Been Done: Fuel tank cleaned and sealed (previous owner).Carburetor rebuilt (previous owner).Transmission rebuilt (previous owner).Floors sealed (previous owner).New turn signal switch (previous owner).Radiator flushed (previous owner).New pads and drums (previous owner).New front brake hoses (previous owner).New battery box with top mount to accept standard style battery. New cables. Dual master cylinder for added security (Had planned to add an adjustable pedal rod just because I don't like the play at the top. The brakes work fine though).New shift knob, boot, and shifter bushings.New seat covers and front seat foam.New dash pad (still missing the finishing trim).New floor mats.New rear tray. Professionally cleaned carpet.New kick panels.New window/door knobs.New arm rests. New horn button hardware.New muffler and exhaust.New rear brake line.New trunk mat.Two sections of the wiring harness were replaced with factory correct reproductions. New valve cover gasket.New lower control arms.Almost new tires.New temp sensor/oil pressure sensor. What's Left To Do: Rebuild door hinges (Not necessary, but something I wanted to do) - Kits for both doors are included.Install the cables for the parking brake - all new hardware and cables are included.Remove cassette player and cover with blank out plate.Shocks are old, so new ones wouldn't hurt (I would want to inspect and replace any worn suspension parts then too and maybe perform an arning drop while I was in there!).Replace the exhaust manifold. There appears to be a leak, but luckily a replace is included in the sale.Replace the gasket around the front and rear glass.Replace the oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and rear main seal to stop all the oil leaks.Have a pro adjust the clutch linkage. I adjusted the pedal, but every once in while you will still grind a gear if you are not rev matching. Also remember these 3-speeds don't syncromesh on first and were never meant to be speed shifted. I wanted to source a toploader 4-speed and an adapter plate, but never got around to it. Replace the plastic window rollers in each door. The windows have a hard time going up and down because the rollers are worn.Replace the door handle shaft on the driver's side. It still works okay, but I think it could use a new one.Could use a new steering wheel. Not necessary, but I wanted to throw a new one or at least a better condition used wood one on there. Treat the rust that is starting to form in the rear quarters and trunk (the trunk could use a little more cleaning and paint too). The paint on the top of the car is the original. The sides are still coated with a layer of primer and white paint. You could try removing some of it like we did on the top, but then you would have to address any surprises you might find. The body is very straight and rust free, but there are still going to be some problem areas. There are dings and dents and some rust in the rear quarter panels. The floors are solid. Obviously, you could do much more to this car (like paint it), but if driving it is your main concern than these are the things I would do. Leave the paint alone and you will get a lot more attention than if it were shiny and new. That's just my option though.Drive the heck out of it! Hopefully I didn't miss anything. All the lights and gauges work as they should. The engine fires right up and runs well with a surprising amount of power. Please don't buy this with the intention of doing a V8 swap! The inline six has lots of torque and could be made into a real rocket with a few simple tweaks. If you have any questions please feel free to message me or leave it in the comments on BarnFinds.com. You can also setup a time to see the car or have it inspected too. View more photos here. Bidding starts at $200 with no reserve so it will sell for whatever the market sees fit. Good luck!
