Vehicle Detail
I've decided to let go of my beloved 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280se 4.5. In the time which I have owned it, it has been a simply wonderful car. Many memories and long road trips completed and this car has never let me down. Even though it is now a 41 year old car, it drives better than some new cars. This was originally a Canadian car, then it was driven in Washington state for some time before making its way to South Dakota (surprisingly, the car is 99% rust free), where I purchased the car and drove it back to Kansas. Anyway, being a Mercedes collector and enthusiast, I'm familiar with the six cylinder W108 models. They're fine around town, but if you want to do some serious touring, you need the V8...specifically of the 4.5 variety. These cars love the highway. And they have plenty of torque for around town. The best of both worlds, in my opinion. And if you're looking to turn heads, this car breaks necks. Exterior: The Mercedes 280se is finished in Mercedes 462 Tunis Beige Metallic. It was resprayed approximately 15 years ago and is only showing minor signs of wear. The tops of the front fenders have minor scratches and the cowl has evidence of previous touch up paint, as does the radiator support. But overall, the paint is in great shape. With minimal effort, it could be made to be show quality. There are rust bubbles coming up behind the paint behind both left and right front fenders. The areas are smaller than a pack of gum. And it's merely surface rust. This is the only rust on the entire car. The underside is spotless, as well as the notorious rear wheelwells. The aluminum window trim is aged, but still very presentable. The brightwork is very good, and compliments the paint phenomenally. Interior: This car has brown MB-tex upholstery, which is in perfect condition all around. The wood has been refinished and looks great. And the dash is crack free! If you've been around old Mercedes, then you know this is a rare feat! The carpets are in fine shape as well, with nothing alarming to report. The vacuum door locks work as they should. An aftermarket radio had been installed before I bought the car and works flawlessly. The doors shut in classic Mercedes fashion: like a bank vault. Mechanical: This is where the car really shines. I absolutely love driving this car. On nice sunny days, you can be sure I'll be driving this one. The 4.5 liter electronic fuel injected V8 engine is full of life and is tuned up and is very responsive. The car starts with one brief crank and idles strong. All fluids and filters have been changed within the past year, as well as new tires, fuel pump, battery and horn. The differential was overhauled about 5 years ago. A discreet external engine fan has been professionally installed under the dash for hot summer days. The four wheel disc brakes work well, but a minor squeak can be heard occasionally. The drivers window could use a regulator. The air conditioning works, but could use a recharge. I really hate letting this car get away, but I'm looking for a bigger project, and I have my hands full with my other Mercedes at the moment. I'm in no hurry to sell, and I want it to go to a good home where it is appreciated. These cars are supremely undervalued for what they are.
