Vehicle Detail
Up for Auction is this Very Rare 1965 Mustang K-code 4spd Convertible ! Ford built very few of these cars and even fewer exist today. Less than 1% of all Mustangs built came with the 289 Hi Performance K-code engine. Most of them were either Fastbacks or Coupes. There are only 178 Convertibles in the Registry. The car is all original un-restored. It is the Real deal ! All the Original Vin #'s are stamped in fender aprons and Original door tag are present. Clear Virginia title. The data plate decodes as following:Warranty Number: 5F08K300000Year: 5 1965 Plant: F Dearborn, MI Body Series: 08 Convertible Engine: K 289 4v V8 HiPo Unit: 300000 300000 Miscellaneous Vehicle DataBody: 76A Convertible, Standard Interior Color: J Rangoon Red Trim: D5 White Crinkle Vinyl with Red Appointments, Standard Interior Date: 05A January 05, 1965 D.S.O: 89 Transportation Service Axle: 5 3.50:1, Conventional Trans: 5 4-Speed Manual More Info coming soon... BODY COLOR TRIM DATE DSO AXLE TRANS WARRANTY NUMBER THIS VEHICLE IS MANUFACTURED UNDER UNITED STATES AND FOREIGN PATENTS AND PATENT APPLICATIONS A PRODUCT OF FORD MOTOR COMPANY This car was built before the GT option was available however the car is loaded with options: Besides the K-code engine and 4spd transmission it has a Factory Original Disc Brakes, Power Convertible Top, Console, Styled steel wheels , tinted glass, rocker moldings , AM Radio , Reverse lights, 2 speed wipers, washer pump, Remote mirror, and Originally it came with a Rally Pac. The 8k Rally Pac unfortunately is missing. It was stolen a few years ago. They do reproduce them or I see originals on here for around $500. I didn't disclose the last 5 digits of the vin # What is really interesting about the car is that the DSO ( District Sales Office ) is Transportation Services. These are vehicles that Ford kept for internal use. They were used for Ford Exec. , Marketing and Testing. There is also a Brass Tag on the fender which was a way Ford kept up with this vehicle in their inventory. There seems to be very little information about these Brass Tag Mustangs and I wish I could tell you more about this one... I would love to know. I have not been able to find another Brass Tag 65 Convertible out there let alone a K-code. I bought this car off a local lady that purchased the car in 1966. She was the 3rd owner. She didn't know much about the history of the car but just said she was told it was ordered special for racing... ? The car is loaded with options so its really hard to say what Ford used it for. The Best part of this car is how Original the car is. Any of the Boss Mustangs or K-code cars have many unique / rare parts that are very expensive to find and purchase. This car is 100% complete. Items that are usually missing like the Original Carb is there. C40F-AL is there ! Under the hood of this car is like going back in time. Other than the hoses and spark plug wires it looks to be all original. The correct Carb and intake manifold, Original FoMoCo dual point distributor, the chrome valve covers, K-code Heads, K-code exhaust manifolds, the original unique engine mounts, the alum. water pump, the Big harmonic balancer, the original 4 blade fan, the big pulley alternator, the original radiator... I'm not sure on the Fuel pump. This one Says Carter X 1658 ?? It's old, but I cannot seem to find that number used for an original one. Also has the correct 4spd Toploader Transmission with original shifter and the 9inch Rear end with 3:50 gears. All the correct Factory Disc brake parts are there and it does have the quick ratio HCC-AX steering gear box. The next best thing is that Runs and Drives. After sitting for 29 years, I was able to change the fluids, new condenser, plugs and a fresh battery and this engine came to life. The more I ran it the better it sounded... You could hear those solid lifters tapping. It was an exciting day. I was able to drive the car around the yard but the brakes are not working so I never left 1st gear. I was shocked to see the lights and gauges working. NO you cannot drive the car home but I honestly do not think the engine needs to be rebuilt. With all that said, the car does need restoration to include rust repairs. The car has rust in all the common places that an early mustang convertible would have. I have taken pictures of the floor pans with all of the interior out of the car so you can see this. I would replace the floors with a once piece floor pan. The front and rear frame rails also need some work. The outer rockers look fine but the inner rockers have some areas that need repair. Surprisingly, the trunk floor is nice and solid. It is a very fixable car and well worth the restoration cost. In todays market this car should be valued around $75,000 This is the only Brass Tag K-code Convertible known to exist. A few simple rules: Deposit in 48 hours and balance within 7 days of the auction ending. Do not bid on the car if you have less than 10 all positive feedback unless you contact me first or I will delete your bid and block you. Please do not bid if you do not have the funds. Winning the auction doesn't mean you get to come inspect the car and see if you want it or kick the tires and think about it. You welcome to come see it in person ! It's pretty simple, just treat people like you would want to be treated... On Sep-06-14 at 07:58:41 PDT, seller added the following information: I have had several questions about part #'s and date codes on this car. I pulled the starter and the casting #'s for the block are C5AE-6015 and the date code is 4H31 which decodes as Aug. 31st 1964. Which seemed early for a Jan. 65 built car. I have added a picture of this block casting #. I had been looking and looking for a Vin # on the block and finally find that on the passenger side of the block down low near the oil pan. that number looks to be 5F07K238938. I uploaded a picture of this too. This number does not match the vin # for the car. )-: I called the previous owner and asked if her husband had ever pulled the engine out and she said the engine has never been out of the car. She bought this car is late 1966 so I'm surprised by this and apparently it must have been changed early in its life. Maybe the car was used for testing or something. I just don't know the history of the car for the 20 months of its life. The heads do have the 19 on the corners for a K-code heads and the spring cups and screw in studs so they are definitely K-code heads. It was clean inside the engine, so that was a good sign. The date code on the heads are 4H3 which is Aug. 3rd 1964. I uploaded a picture of this. The intake is a C5 and a date code of 4L30 which is Nov. 30th 1964 so I believe it to be original to the car. I also confirmed the rear end is a correct 9inch rear . I confirmed the transmission is a toploader close ratio. and the carb is positively a HiPo carb and I believe it is original to the car.
