Vehicle Detail
A very, very special car indeed. This car was literally a garage find. I discovered it sitting in the garage of an elderly woman, and it originally belonged to her now deceased husband. It had been sitting, more or less since he passed, or roughly 5 years, at least. The tires were dry rotted, and the plumbing was questionable. So, I got it fired up, and set to work getting it road worthy. I am not making this up. The gentleman had been the original owner, and taken delivery of this vehicle in Europe. In fact, my information has it that this car was the first off the line for the model year of all the 745i's produced that year. His company name and production code is on a plate on the inside door jam of the drivers side door. To get it into the United States and bypass the federalization process, he brought it in through Canada. Thus, when he originally ordered it, it did not have the usual KM/H speedo, but already had an MPH speedo, (and odometer). Also, it does not have a Catalytic converter. It does not have front side marker lights, only the rear as required by Canada at the time. To be clear, this man was a very successful businessman in the aviation business, and left his widow an impressive car collection that includes a Rolls Phantom, Bentley, Jag, Mercedes, etc. All are newer models, all with low miles. Thus, there is no reason to suspect, and is in fact supported by the documentation, that the mileage is not true. To get the car roadworthy, I have done the following: 1) Replaced the front brakes, including the pads and calipers, with BMW approved NOS parts. Rotors were fine. Rear brakes are fine. 2) Replaced the water pump, as well as the thermostat, thermostat housing, various temp sensors, and hoses. Plus, all the belts. 3) Replaced the original wheels with US spec rims from an 84 model BMW. New rubber as well. I did this because the original MXV tires are nearly impossible to find, and very expensive when you do. I also wanted to keep as much as an original look to the car as possible, and this does the trick. Original wheels and rubber comes with the car. 4) These cars had a hydraulic rear suspension that was self leveling. The original owner had it disabled, so, I took it a step further and had new rear springs and shocks installed. The original parts all come with the car.5) The radiator was iffy, so I had that replaced as well. Mechanically, the car runs and drives great. Starts right up, and I regularly take it on trips to my friends house 100 miles away for weekend adventures. Over all, the car also got a good cleaning. The leather is extroardinary. No rips, tears or blemishes. I used a really good saddle conditioner and cleaned the leather. It is supple and the seats are amazingly comfortable. No cracks in the dash. The wood inlays in the dash are in excellant condition. I've included a picture of the drivers side door inlay, which is the only notable area of wear. This car lived in a climate controlled garage most of its life, and the interior shows. The original Becker radio up front works just fine, as does the rear seat radio controls contained in the armrest. So where's the hitch, you ask? The biggest hitch is in the paint finish. From afar, the finish looks nice, as evidenced by the pictures. But, up close, the paint is not so good. Clear coat is faded, and there are an abundance of swirl marks that lead me to believe that in the past, someone had attempted to 'buff' out the finish and screwed it up. That said, if this car does not sell on ebay this time around, then I am going to have it professionally repainted and guess what, I'll post it again and the price will go up. This car is really for the serious enthusiast, and is a joy to drive. Shipping costs are at the winning bidders expense, although I will be happy to help coordinate on my end. Winning bidder must supply deposit immediately upon winning the auction, and title will not be turned over until full payment is made, and that final balance must be paid within 24 hours of winning auction. Feel free to ask questions. I'll do my best. GOOD LUCK.
