Vehicle Detail

1972 Triumph Stag. The Triumph Stag is a British sports car sold between 1970 and 1978 by the Triumph Motor Company, styled by the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. There were only some 26,000 manufactured, out of which only 2,800 were imported to the United States. Out of those it is my belief that there are fewer than 500 to 1,000 remaining, and of those, this Stag must be in the top 100. This Triumph is possibly the most beautiful of all Triumphs and remains a classic to this day with its Italian styling. The vehicle initially had a bad reputation because of its engine, but the prior owner refitted this Stag with a Chevy 350 V-8, as most of the existing Stag's have been so modified, and includes a 5 speed Tremec racing transmission. It is my understanding that I am only the SECOND owner of this vehicle. The original owner lived in Austin Texas, and the car was represented as being in a private museum for many of its last years before my purchase in April of 2012 through a consignment to an Austin Texas dealership. This car had already been substantially restored prior to my purchase, and I have continued to make some improvements over the past months. Unfortunately, I have encountered a serious health issue and can no longer enjoy the Stag. It has every option made available, including electric windows, modernized air conditioning system which works as well as my Lexus, new AM/ FM/CD radio, near perfect soft top, near perfect hard top, near perfect interior and wood, everything works with the exception of the clock which can be purchased from several after-market suppliers. Also includes new Stag floor mats, and even a Stag banner to hang in your garage (where this vehicle has been kept). The Wire wheels with knock off hub caps are in excellent condition, and other improvements include new rear wheel bearings, new exhaust manifold, fresh tune up including plugs and wires, and a conversion to electronic ignition. In the last few months I have also put on a new set of tires, new battery, new water pump, and a new clutch cable (with an extra if needed in the future). As with most collectors, my cost of totally restoring this toy exceeds my expectation of sales price. My reserve is thousands less than I now have invested. I purchased this car on a whim, partly because I had been interested in a Stag for years but they are so rare I never found one to even consider. Further, I make no apology at being a University of Georgia bulldog fan, and this car is uniquely red, with red hard top, with black soft top, black interior, real wood, a very rare rear seat, (so I can ride my grandchildren around) but I did not realize that this is also a James Bond car. You can research any part conceivable needed for this vehicle on e-bay or the internet, and you will find that there is a huge cult following for the die cast collectibles of a 1970 Stag actually driven by Sean Connery in Diamonds are Forever. There are hundreds of sites that still sell models of this vehicle, although in an ugly looking mustard color. It apparently is the only actual car actually driven by Sean Connery, as the others were photography enhanced. I am offering the car at a reserve that is well below the high retail shown in the NADA guides. This car certainly approaches high retail, and very little would be required to complete a restoration suitable for showing, other than the replacement Chevy V-8, the power of which in this sports car will speak for itself when you crank it up. The reserve it somewhat higher than average retail, but this by no means is an average retail vehicle. It is well beyond that, and but for health it would not have been sold. I had to pay the Georgia sales tax since I purchased it from a consignment dealer, but that would save a considerable amount of money to a purchaser since you would be buying from an individual. I will be happy to respond to serious inquiries only, and very confident in the fact that a lucky purchaser if he has a desire for this beautiful and collectible vehicle will not be at all disappointed. *Due to a number of inquires I have added a number of pictures of the undercarriage including the new exhaust system, and the engine. The photo that has my mechanics hand in it shows the location of a manual heater value knob, which has to be turned to go from heat to air conditioning. I forgot to mention that in the past few months a new exhaust system has been installed, all hoses and belts have been replaced, and this car is in excellent and remarkable condition inside, outside, and mechanically.
