Vehicle Detail
Relisting due to an idiot who says that is co-worker hit the "buy it now". Yeah, right. Up for sale is my 1979 Trans Am. This car is in amazing shape! A little history- In 1977, Pontiac came out with the latest body style on the Trans Am. In 1979, they changed quite a bit from engine to body. First, they changed the front headlight design. Second, this was the first year of a power increase for the Trans Am since the early 70's. In 1979, the Trans Am came with two engine options in the 6.6L. The first was an Oldsmobile 403 CID. Most, if not all, of these were mated to automatic transmissions. The more desirable engine was the Pontiac 400 which were mated to 4 speed manual transmissions. The way to tell the difference is the hood. On the "shaker" hood, if it says 6.6L, it is a Pontiac 400, if it says 6.6Litre, it is an Olds. 1979 was the last year of the 6.6L large displacement engine. In 1980 it was replaced with a 301 Turbo that was a piece of crap. This car is a Pontiac 400 with a 4 speed. The stock engine was rated at 220 horsepower. This engine has been rebuilt with an aggressive cam and has way more power. I have not Dynoed it, but I would guess over 300. It may be numbers matching as well, but I have not checked. It does have the correct heads as they are marked "6X-4". This car also has the WS6 and W72 packages which include a tuned suspension and 4 wheel disk brakes. The engine currently has an Edelbrock Performer intake and 800 CFM Edelbrock carb. I still have the original quadrajet if you want to put it back on. It came with the Edelbrock and runs so well, I decided to leave it alone. This Trans Am has 72,000 original miles. It has been painted recently and the paint is gorgeous. A deep shiney black. I would rate it a 10 except for two small details. On the bumper you can see where the original paint in a small spot was not sanded down and you can see the original creases under the new paint (see pic). Also, on the shaker hood, the original 6.6L was painted over without sanding. You can still see the 6.6L outline under the new paint if you look closely. The interior is also in great shape. The original seats look new. There is a small crack on the center console (see pic). It has the original Hurst 4 spd shifter. The trunk is great with a nice black carpet. Mechanically I have done a lot to this TA. When I purchased it, it had a ton of leaks and ran so so. The first leak to be addressed was the rear main seal. Believe it or not, Pontiac used rope for rear mains in 1979. Luckily, some aftermarket companies now make modern seals and I replaced it with a Viton one. Does not leak, at all. While I had the engine out, I replaced the clutch with a new one. Shifts like a dream! The oil pan was leaking pretty bad. It was put on with just silicone and no gasket. Not a big deal, but replaced it with a gasket and it does not leak. The rear transmission seal was leaking, replaced. Power steering was leaking and fixed. As far as I know, I got all the leaks, which for a 1970's Trans Am is pretty damn impressive. The "snowflake" wheels have been redone and look great. They could use a little polishing, but are fine. The BFGoodrich tires are in excellent shape and have at least 85% of their tread. The T-tops are in great shape and slide in and out easily. As with all T-top Trans Am's, they do leak a little. It even has the original T-top sleeves to protect them when not on the car. This was a factory Air Conditioned car, but it has been removed. It could easily be brought back to life. I do have the compressor for it, but it need brackets and a condenser. This car has no rust, at all. The exhaust is new and in great shape. No catalytic converters. Sounds great! Deep and throaty but not obnoxious. There are few issues, if any, with this Trans Am. With a little work, this could easily be a show car. Some of the interior panels could use some paint, and I have the correct paint that goes with the TA. I was told this TA was ordered from the factory without the screaming chicken on the hood. I ordered one and have it, along with a complete decal kit, if you would like to put it on. I was going too, but the look without it grew on me. I have the original build sheet for this TA. See pics. This is a great time to buy this car. This period Trans Am's are beginning to appreciate at unprecedented rates. Some are saying over 20% per year. Anyway, this is a great, fun, reliable and fast Trans Am in great shape! Feel free to ask any questions. If you would like to see it or drive it, great! Just shoot me a message. Thanks for looking and happy bidding. On Sep-19-13 at 12:35:41 PDT, seller added the following information: Looking at the pictures, they do not do this TA justice. The paint looks much better in person. She was also a little dusty. Thanks!
