Vehicle Detail
Here is a really nice, unrestored and well maintained 1970 Dodge A108 Sportsman for auction. The engine was rebuilt in 1999; only 8,000 miles have been added since that time. The odometer has turned once so actual miles are 178,092. 1/2 ton transmission was rebuilt and installed with a new clutch at that time. Tires show very little wear and are in great condition (I have the tire purchase receipts). Brakes are good and were done along with new wheel bearings and king pins not long before I purchased the van. The Dodge runs and drives beautifully, the engine pulls incredibly strong up steep hills, operates very smoothly at highway speeds and is a joy to drive. Garage kept so all of the metal panels and floors are super solid. The previous owner operated his own contractor/construction business and added a custom built and super strong roof rack which I think looks great and makes this van really stand out. It would be perfect for carrying surfboards/longboards/paddleboards, canoes or kayaks, lumber, etc...a very versatile, usable rack. I have the receipt for the engine rebuild ($1300) which will be included. Also included is a very nice, good condition & clean 3/4 ton transmission that can easily be rebuilt should someone want to make this a 3/4 ton van to pull heavier loads along with many extra parts (extra carb, seals, bearings, points, fuel pump, ignition parts, clutch linkage parts, misc bulbs/fuses/gaskets, nice original spare tire, a neat vintage fire extinguisher, jack, and more). Cosmetically, the van looks really nice and gets lots of compliments and attention (and offers to buy) when driven. That said, it is not perfect and shows signs of having served as a work vehicle. there are very minor body imperfections, nothing that stands out from a short distance but can be noticed upon closer inspection. No accidents, just a few minor dings here from normal use over 40 years; no body filler anywhere that I can detect...everywhere you tap as you go around the van rings solid metal. Glass is great all the way around the van (front windshield has a couple of small rock chips), original rims are nice, tires are great and the hubcaps are clean and dent-free. Paint is not original as the van was repainted by the gentleman I bought it from but he did a nice job (not professional but still very nice) and he kept the with original color and paint scheme. He also provided extra paint that he used when he applied the repaint about eight years ago...I will include that with the sale as well. Just a super solid 43 year old van!! Minor areas of rust under passenger floor-mat caused by a worn window seal at some point. A couple of other extremely minor areas of rust all of which is very easy to deal with and correct. Pan, door bottoms, sills, jams, cargo floor, body panels, underneath side of van are all very solid...the van is 95% free of corrosion thanks to being garaged nearly it entire life. I envisioned turning this into a surf van but my priorities are having to shift a bit and I'm not able to garage this van which is a shame since it has been garaged for the last 38 years. I'm hoping it can find a new home where it will be able to provide another 40 years of service. This van can be driven anywhere so please review my feedback, ask any questions you may have and bid with confidence. I will reply to all questions. The van is titled and registered in my name and I have the clear title in hand which I will provide along with a bill of sale to the winning bidder. Van is sold as is; no implied warranty of any sort. I'm leaving room to add a few pictures later should I get a request to photograph a particular area. I want the next owner to be as happy with this van as I have been. US Bids only please. Thank you and good luck! On Sep-16-13 at 19:25:22 PDT, seller added the following information: I had hit "send" before finishing my reply to the question below...here is the rest of the answer: ...YES, the van runs, drive, shifts, stops great, is completely road-worthy and is ultra dependable...I would have no hesitations in making a cross-country trip in it. Gas mileage at freeway speeds is about 18 -19 mpg. Thanks again! On Sep-17-13 at 09:20:21 PDT, seller added the following information:Here is another answer to a question from earlier today that I should have posted for other viewers to see...Question was if the roof rack was welded or bolted and also what was the van used for in it's past. Answer: Hello, The van belonged to an older gentleman who had a contractor/construction business and who used the van as his daily work vehicle from 1975 when he bought the Dodge from the original owner until 1999 when he retired. It continued to be used after his retirement on his Christmas tree farm, a business he continues to run/operate. It was not a daily work vehicle after 1999; only 8000 miles approx have been put on the van since then and it has stayed garaged and used sparingly to move Christmas trees each year between '99 and 2013 (when I purchased it--I'm the 3rd owner). The rack is NOT welded to the vehicle but is fastened down extremely well. It would take some doing to remove it. Thanks for your interest. On Sep-20-13 at 19:30:11 PDT, seller added the following information:The photos show (2) close ups of the back cargo floor...the original owner glued down carpet in the early 70s. I removed the carpet when I bought the van and what you see (the dark lines on the cargo floor in the pictures) is dried glue and old foam backing form the carpet. This is removable and is NOT rust. Thanks.
