Vehicle Detail

1940 Chevy Special Deluxe Four Passenger Coupe Restored – Multiple Awards “Special Deluxe” model features a rear seat and special chrome accents Vehicle History My Chevy was a Southern California vehicle until 1989 when a man in Northern California purchased the car with 48,000 miles (don’t know if it was original mileage). He was responsible for most of the extensive restoration. In 1996 a friend of mine purchased the car now with 62,000 miles. He used it primarily for Chevrolet club touring and on his rounds as a security guard in a gated community. In 2005 I jumped at the opportunity to buy the coupe. My friend moved out of state to a home with limited garage space. He had only been driven it about 2,000 miles, now with 64,000 miles. Car has been faithful, used primarily for car tours and local events. A couple of years ago we went on a trouble free 1,000-mile tour, up to 24 MPG, speed between 60 & 65 MPH. I keep it in an enclosed garage, covered, washed, waxed and serviced as needed. I, now after eight years, have “the itch” and am ready to sell it to purchase another classic Chevy. Mechanics - all carefully documented by the previous owner Engine – original 216 CI was replaced with a completely overhauled 235 CI engine from a 1957 Chevy. Transmission – the original three-speed vacuum shift was replaced with a three-speed Saginaw tranny. It works great with the advantage of a synchromesh low gear. Rear-end – original was replaced with a ’67 Chevy truck rear end with a 3.42 axle ratio Glass – all replaced with the exception of the rear window. Wiring – substantial work was done and is documented. Mechanics - since my purchase in 2005 – all documented Suspension – When I purchased the car the original “Knee Action” suspension was worn. I replaced it with a rebuilt one from Apple Hydraulics. Road manners greatly improved. Tires – Coker Classic 500R16/700R16 radials installed with three-inch whitewalls. Oil changes/lubrication – done regularly and documented Tune-up complete and new Optima battery – July 2011 Exterior Body panels – rust free fenders, hood, doors, and trunk lid are in near perfect condition. Paint –always complimented by the public. It is a dark teal color. There are a few rock chips and at certain angles some “orange peel” is visible in the trunk area. Chrome – grill, bumper & bumper guards, emblems, etc. are in near perfect condition having been rechromed (at great expense) in 1989. Hubcaps – correct stock ones for this car. The chrome is good. Some minor dents. I’d rate them about a 7 on a 1-10 scale. Running boards – near perfect. Tires – when I purchased the car I replaced the old ones with new appropriate sized Coker radials with three inch white walls. They now have only 5,000 miles on them. Glass – all excellent with the exception of the rear window. It is scratched. Sliding windows in the back work fine. Vent windows are difficult to operate. Believe gears need lubrication. Stainless window frames (exclusive for the Special Deluxe model) are near perfect. Inside trunk is tastefully restored and is near perfect. License plate – pictured, is nicely restored, and is the correct vintage. It is used for display purposes. I only have one. The “legal” plates are stored in the trunk. Doors – open and close tightly. Rubber insulation looks new. Locks works fine. Could use new door “stops”. Interior Upholstery – completely restored with a Hampton Coach Interior. Carpeting front & back – appears as new. Dash, window frames, steering wheel – repainted with a complimentary brown/tan color. Steering wheel has some scratches. Gauges – Voltage meter and temperature gauge work fine. So does the fuel meter but the needle begins to flutter when it reaches about ¼ full. Oil pressure gauge always “pegs out” when car is running. Radio – appears to be stock original. Push buttons don’t function. There is some sound but it barely picks up local stations. Turning signals –after market item. They function as they should (not self-canceling). Heater/defroster – car does not have one. Windshield wipers – vacuum wipers do not work. I was told the switch is bad. Extras Custom car cover (“California Car Cover”), front seat belts, several trophies, new T-shirt with my Chevy featured, Owner’s Manual, vintage map, brochures, locking gas cap, magazines featuring 1940 Chevy’s, newspaper article with picture featuring my Chevy. and detailed service records..
