Vehicle Detail
1974 Ford Gran Torino Sport survivor, perfect Starsky & Hutch project! Here is a nice, solid Gran Torino Sport. This car would be perfect for a Starsky & Hutch project – because it’s not just a Torino – but a Gran Torino (proper moldings) – and it’s also a Sport, so you get the factory tachometer, a full instrumentation (temp gauge, oil pressure gauge, DC ammeter and clock, too!) You also get the Starsky & Hutch appropriate sport interior with the split front seat with armrest, and the red trim – and air conditioning too! You even have the matching sport mirrors with both left and right remote control. She’s not perfect, but she’s got a lot going for her. She’s a solid car with almost no rust, runs and drives – although I would recommend a thorough maintenance check before taking it on the road. Exterior body – the previous owner removed the vinyl top and decided to take a spray can to some of the areas – I wish he would have left it alone. Otherwise, she has about 80% original paint all over her. The only outer body rust through I noticed is a small hole the size of a dime (see pictures) behind the driver’s rear wheel. I noticed a little bubble on the bottom of the door, but otherwise, she is very nice – and straight too! There is a small dent at the bottom of the driver’s front fender, behind the wheel. The hood and trunk lips are in great shape and all the panels can be saved. The opera windows can be welded closed with a single piece of sheetmetal and the car can be ready for the ‘Red Tomato’ paint scheme in no time. I noticed that she is missing the right front molding piece in front of the front tire and the gas cap emblem – but I see both of these items presently available here on EBAY. Electrically, it’s pretty darn good, too. All the features tested worked fine with the exception of the fuel gauge. Even the original AM radio works well. You can see the lights and blinkers in use in the video and I even videoed the tach working. The horn works fine, too – from both sides of the wheel, and the wipers work fine. The A/C I presume will need to be charged. The interior is a time capsule. I actually sat in the car and listened to the AM radio while I cleaned the interior a bit. The seats are in pretty good shape, I only noticed a small amount of splitting of the original material on the back seat. The front seat-backs are awesome and the dash pad is great – no cracks. The dome light is missing the cover and the headliner has one small rip in the corner. Again, see the pictures for more details. I also think he hated shoulder seatbelts because they are disconnected and under the seat. The engine is the 351 Cleveland with all it’s original accessories. It still has it’s air pump system, original 2v carb and I see no performance upgrades at all. It runs well, the transmission shifts well although the exhaust is a bit noisy and ‘rigged’ as you can see in the pics. The car has a 9-inch rear and front disc brakes; rear drums. It has a new alternator, new starter with solenoid and new fuel pump. The underbody is in really good shape, too. You can see in the pics that there are no floor holes and no frame damage. I would suggest that it get a new battery tray since I can see the previous owner slid a new piece of non-matching metal under there. He also dropped the fuel tank (I presume that this is why the gauge doesn’t work) and cut an access hole in the trunk floor for the filler tube to make it easier for him. Again, I wish he didn’t do that. She comes with the original owner’s manual, warranty card and various service records that you can see in the pictures. She has a clear VA title. She is available as-is, where-is in Baltimore, and you are welcome to review the car before bidding during the auction. Just drop me a line and I will be happy to arrange the schedule. I can deliver the car on my trailer in the eastern US for $1.70 per loaded mile if you wish – or local delivery within Baltimore metro is free.
