Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is a 65 Pontiac Lemans, under construction to become a GTO clone. Car is an original California car with just over 75,000 original miles. (Mileage stated in ad is approximate). Body panels are rock solid, as is the floor, trunk, etc. I bought this car in 2007 and paid over $8,000. I bought it, and paid that much for her, because of the overall solidness of the body. This is an excellent baseline body and frame for a restoration. FYI: When I had the fenders off I did see when one of the front fenders was repaired at some point in her life. The repair was well done and the body panels are totally straight. This car is ready for upholstering, sanding, and paint. Car is a 2 door post car. It came from the factory with a 326 V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, and a radio. Little else. Even has single speed wipers!!! Car now has a rebuilt 389 motor, with a single Carter Carburetor, coupled with a rebuilt turbo-hydro 3 speed automatic transmission. (I paid about $1,000 for the engine and transmission before I decided to get them both rebuilt!). Engine was professionally built by Valley Engines in Fountain Valley, CA. It was built to stock specs with the addition of the ram air cam. Rebuild of the engine alone (no intake, exhaust, carb, accessories, etc.) was about $5,000. Transmission rebuild was also professional done by Inland Transmission in Fullerton, CA, at a cost of about $1,500. Ram Air exhaust manifolds were added after the rebuild. The only miles on this car since the rebuild have been to move it in and out of my garage. Work done to this car, besides the rebuilt engine and transmission is: Car has been converted from a column shift to a floor shift. Shifter is an original 1965 GTO automatic floor shift shifter converted to work with the 3 speed automatic transmission (Shift Works conversion kit). Drive shaft was professionally cut and balanced to match up with the longer turbo hydro transmission. Emergency brake cables were also modified to provide proper clearance due to the longer transmission. Front seat has been converted from its original bench seat to a pair of 1965 Lemans/GTO bucket seats. Car comes with an original 65 GTO center console. It’s in the car but not installed (needs to be bolted down over the carpets which I do not have). Floor of the car is rock solid and no work was needed. Trunk of the car had some small pin holes dues to water leaking from the back window area. This was a common issue with the “A” body cars. The trunk floor holes were so small the repair was done with POR-15 and no metal required. Original Lemans hood has been replaced with an aftermarket steel GTO hood. Still needs the hood scoop insert. Dash has been replaced with a GTO style dash (wood grain). Brakes have been converted to power, with a dual master cylinder, power brake booster, and proportioning valve. Front brakes have been converted to disc (conversion kit with master cylinder cost $550.00). I have a new, in the box, front end suspension rebuild kit (bushings, etc.) that goes with the car. I have 2 sets of wheels and tires that go with the car. Needed 15” to go over the disc brakes. These 15" are Center Line Aluminum wheels. Original wheels are steel 14”. Both sets of wheels and tires are not great but hold air and will get the car to its new home. New dual exhaust system is installed on the car, connected to the ram air manifolds. Car has a custom built dual pass aluminum radiator (another $600). This car will not likely ever overheat if you keep coolant in her! I have all new GTO emblems ready to be installed on the car. I have new hardware (door handles, window handles, etc.) that go with the car. The “body work” seen in the pictures is simply where I removed the Lemans emblems and filled in the holes. Covered with a light primer. Lots of extra or spare parts like a couple of extra alternators, a newly rebuilt starter, etc. Lots of “stuff”). Overall I have over $22,000 invested to date. That’s what I documented. No labor, etc. in that number. I’m not expecting to get anywhere near that amount. My loss is someone gain. Buy this car for a fraction of the investment to date and finish her. She deserves to get back on the road in the glory of her original self. NOTES:Car is for sale locally.
