Vehicle Detail

Bid with confidence - 100% eBay rating! VIDEOS: RECENTLY RESTORED 1965 marked the introduction of a completely re-styled Corvair designed for the space age! These automobiles were quite advanced for the period (rear air-cooled six cylinder aluminum engine, independent suspension, self-adjusting brakes) and their body styling has stood the test of time. Rear engine Corvairs have no problem attracting interest and the 4-speed convertible models are especially fun to show off. My goal with the restoration was to keep it stock in appearance as much as possible but still allow myself to have a little fun with the paint color and vintage "upgrades" such as the chrome trim and Buick wheels. I've been driving this beauty around town about twice a month to attend car shows and Lonestar Corvair Club meetings. The red metallic paint looks a little different every day. On cloudy days it looks like a dark red, almost maroon. On bright days it shines brightly like a Candy Apple red with metallic sparkle. Either way, I get compliments everywhere I go! >>> CLICK HERE FOR ADDITIONAL PHOTOS OVERVIEW -Red metallic paint -Black vinyl interior with chrome hardware & trim -White vinyl top -Vintage 14 inch chrome wheels 101,300 miles Clear Texas Title - Starts relatively quickly (usually first or second try) - Idles smoothly with vintage exhaust sound (not too loud, not too soft) - Shifts into all 4 gears plus reverse - Drives with ample power - Brakes work - Gauges work - Lights work (except for backup/reverse light -- switch needs work) - Windows roll down - Wipers work - Fresh air vents work - Top is water tight and rear window is intact Only 26,466 Monza convertibles were made in 1965. RECENT WORK - Paint (Exterior, Dashboard, Trunk, Engine Bay) - Windshield (new, with blue tint stripe across the top) - Vintage Buick chrome wheels (14 inch) - Whitewall tires (new, Fisk Classic) - Carburetors rebuilt - Engine seals replaced (with highest quality available) - Interior refurbished (including hand-stitched seats and chrome door handles) - Dashboard vinyl replaced - Front end lowered 1 inch (improves handling & appearance) - Door hinges replaced - Floor pans replaced - FatMat sound/vibration absorbing material applied to entire floor - Wheel well chrome trim - Door edge chrome trim - Gas door chrome trim - Rear end (cove panel) chrome trim - Rocker panel chrome trim - Emblems/badges (new "old stock") - Side mirror replaced - Door handles replaced - Window "fuzzies" & weather stripping replaced - Spare tire mount moved to trunk (improves handling & engine appearance) - Polk Audio speakers wired to 20 watt amplifier (hidden under dash, input for your mp3 player) - Ignition coil amplifier (Nology PowerCore, improves engine spark) - 1965 Texas plates BODY CONDITION This car is beautiful! Just painted in August 2012. Deluxe chrome trim and pristine emblem badges installed as well. No deep scratches. A few light ones (in the clear coat) are visible in full sunlight. There are other minor imperfections in the paint as well, but you really have to look for them. Vinyl top is in decent shape. No leaks. Rear window has a few light scuffs. Might polish out. Interior vinyl in decent shape. A little wear from normal usage. Driver's seat has a minor crack. The lining is still intact underneath, so cushion stuffing is not exposed. Should be possible to glue it back for seamless look. Underbody has light surface rust. I was going to paint a rust inhibitor over it at some point. The body shop told me it wasn't urgent. DRIVE QUALITY Mechanically speaking, I would rate the car as a "good" driver. Great for cruising the strip or heading to the drive-in, but spirited driving could be enhanced with a few adjustments. Car suspension reacts well and not overly bouncy or abrupt. The long wheel base helps maintain a comfortable ride. STILL NEEDS - Steering box needs adjustment or replacement (to tighten up steering wheel freeplay). I've gotten used to the loosey-goosey-ness but new owner will probably want to address this. Clark's Corvair Parts has rebuilt steering boxes in their catalog ready to install ($238). - Front end seems to be in decent shape. Haven't had any issues except for the free play in the steering box. Rubber bushings are present but show a little age. Light surface rust, eventually I was going to paint underbody with POR-15. - One of the push rod tube seals weeps a little oil. All of the push rod tubes do have new Viton seals but one of them does have a tiny leak. - When brakes are cold the car sometimes pulls slightly to the right. I had plans to replace the rubber brake lines. I think that might take care of the initial pressure imbalance. The drum brakes stop ok otherwise, and the pulling usually doesn't happen after you've been driving for a little while. - There is occasional slight hesitation when taking off from a dead stop. Once in motion, driving is pretty smooth. Both carbs have been rebuilt but perhaps some fine tuning would remove this occasional hesitation. Could be a spark issue or maybe timing. I'm not an expert, but it seems like something that a few adjustments could take care of. - Reverse (backup) light switch needs to be repaired or replaced - Clutch engages all 4 gears (+ reverse) with no grinding but somewhere down the line I was going to have the clutch cable adjusted. I'm not sure whether I was going to shoot for additional pedal travel or less... but I was going to try another setting at some point. - Fine tuning of wheel camber alignment - Fine tuning of top frame (folds down but is a little tight) - Top frame padding (between metal frame and top vinyl) serves its purpose but a small section needs repair - Fine tuning of windshield chrome trim alignment (just one corner, very minor) - Heater / defroster untested (control switch is stuck, some ductwork may need replacement) - AM radio installed but not connected - 20-watt audio amplifier works but needs power wire re-connected to fusebox. I have spare connectors. - Horn worked before steering wheel was pulled for repainting (wire probably loose) - Installation of new liner for glove box (I have the part in hand) PARTS ARE AVAILABLE Clark's Corvair ( www.corvair.com ) maintains an inventory of just about EVERY part you'd ever need! Common parts like switches, lightbulbs, and bolts can also be found at O'Reilly's and Auto Zone. DELIVERY Local pickup is preferred. If you live close to me, I might be willing to drive it over, but you must live within 20 minutes of downtown Austin, Texas. If a delivery service is required, buyer is responsible for arrangements and expenses. DISCLAIMER This car has never left me stranded or needed a tow, but I lack the means to offer a warranty. As with any classic vehicle that is driven on a regular basis, some wear-and-tear is to be expected and there are always further improvements that can be made. Periodically driving classic vehicles is important to keep everything in optimal operating condition... and it is also quite fun! I have attempted to describe this vehicle to the best of my ability, but there may be inadvertent errors or omissions. All photos and videos were taken a few weeks ago (April 13, 2013). QUESTIONS? My name is Daniel and I can be reached at (512) 850-4456. HAPPY BIDDING! -------------------------- Note about Interior Photos The sun was very bright and directly overhead when I took the photos. Under the dashboard the carpet may appear to have a bright spot of color, but that is just sunlight shining through the defroster vent in the top of the dashboard. The black carpet is a little faded in some areas, but it is mostly uniform fading.
