1991 TOYOTA MR-2 "The Poor Man's Ferrari!!" The concept for the MR-2 began in 1976 to create a mid engine car that was stylish and economical. The actual design didn’t happen until 1979 and was led by Akio Yoshida. By 1981 the first prototype was launched both in Japan and California and was nicknamed the SA-X. Although the nicknamed changed in 1983 to SV-3 it was gathering huge publicity and popularity with the locals in both countries. The first generation was set to launch mid-year 1984 and the name changed for the last time to MR-2 which stood for Mid Engine, Rear Wheel Drive 2 Seater. As the first generation MR-2’s lasted from 1984 to 1988 it earned quite a reputation for itself and it paved the way for the ever so popular second generation from 1989 – 1999. The second generation MR-2’s resembled the Ferrari 348 and 355 which earned the phrase, “The poor man’s Ferrari”. The styling of this 1991 second generation MR-2 is so striking and so timeless that it is actually becoming more popular as the years go on. The body is straight with no visible signs of accidents or previous accidents. The paint was redone within the last 2 years and shows great luster and shine. A good wet sand and compound will make the appearance pop. But is more than acceptable as the way it sits. All the glass is in excellent condition and is clear and free from any chips or cracks. The lights, marker lights and signals all work as they should. Although the car looks amazing and in excellent condition for its age, please do not expect a 100 point show car. It is 22 years old and expect some very minor flaws. Also, the passenger front fender is missing the black plastic strip in the center behind the wheel. The tires are brand new and the wheels present extremely well for driver quality, however they could be refinished for show quality. Please look at all the pictures provided and let us know of any questions you may have. Interior: The interior is bone stock and with the exception of removable speakers in the rear is 100% original. Everything in the interior works well and even though some of the finish has been worn off some of the buttons, all operates as it should. The a/c blows ice cold and windows operate as they should. There are no warning lights, check engine lights on and all gauges are clear and in operating order. The seats are also in excellent condition with very little sun fading. There was a small repair done to the front driver’s seat at the seam, but looks great. The carpet is in excellent original condition and the dash has no cracks however its starting to lift near the defrost vents on the passenger side. I assure you this interior is highly above average for its age and has been very well maintained through the years. The interior also includes the sunroof panel which is a very hard item to find and usually lost through the years. The interior of the trunk located in the front of the car is in excellent condition including all factory safety items(jack, tire, etc) and the rear trunk is clean and carpeted. Please look at the pictures provided and let us know of any questions you may have. Drivetrain: This virgin 4cyl is Toyota through and through. Showing no aftermarket parts or performance upgrades, the economical 4 cylinder runs as it should with no noises or hesitations. As mentioned earlier the car does wear new tires and the fluids are all fresh. All brakes, exhaust, belts and hoses are all road worthy and the car is ready for any trip. Down the road the car runs great. Very responsive and shifts perfectly. You will not be disappointed in the riding condition of this 22 year old vehicle and for the year, the miles are extremely low. For a car this age and driving an average of 12k miles a year should have 264k miles. This Toyota only has been driven on average of 4700 miles a year.
