Vehicle Detail

Up for a No Reserve Auction. 1973 Honda XL250 / CR250 fun bike. This little machine could be used for vintage motocross, cross country racing, play riding / practice bike, beginner machine, or even a pit bike. I originally purchased this machine after I experienced two expensive engine failures on my AHRMA race machine. I wanted to be able to practice a few times a week and not go bankrupt repairing my vintage mx bikes. The Honda XL250 engine is reliable as an anvil and spare parts are readily available and inexpensive. The bike itself is a '73 Honda XL250 Motosport with all the street hardware removed. The engine is basically stock side-port 250cc motor with a round-slide Mikuni carburetor and a complete hi-mount Supertrapp exhaust system. The airbox holds a K&N reusable air filter and has a custom made intake. The engine fires up easily, doesn't smoke at all, clutch pull is smooth & light and shifting is flawless. The frame is straight with no weld repairs, the footpegs are tight and level and all excess brackets have been removed. The bike has a new coil and runs with no battery and has a modern push-button kill switch. The handlebars are a comfortable vintage hi-bend bars and feature new controls and a Magura style throttle. Grips are nice Pro-Taper pillow tops. The forks have CR250 internals with pre-load spacers and rear shocks are vintage S & W units. Wheels have clean and straight spokes. Tthe rims are true and are the same DID aluminum hoops that you find on the CR250. I used the OEM gas tank and it was professionally painted like the '74 Honda CR125 machines. The tank is clean inside and is not full of body filler on the outside. The front fender is stock XL250 and the rear fender is a modified CR250 Elsinore unit. The side panels were a difficult fit. I wanted real side numberplates, but had difficulty getting something that would fit tight to the sides of the machine and still clear the rear shocks and also not melt on the exhaust pipe. I ended up using some original Honda CRF150 plates that were a close match to my criteria. I also used a '79 Honda CR250 side #plate (painted black) to hide a ugly open spot where the battery and wiring used to reside behind the stock exhaust. The bike is a lot of fun to play around on and it handles surprisingly well. The motor will pull from very low RPM and the powerband is real smooth like an electric motor. It makes a friendly beginner machine....maybe you can even sell it to the wife as a Mother's day present : ) If you are looking for a killer holeshot machine for the 250 Sportsman class in AHRMA, you are going to get smoked. I do have another CR250 Elsinore for sale that would be better suited for that class. If I was going to keep this machine, I would only change two things. I would upgrade the S & W rear shocks (they are 35 years old and tired) and buy a used sidestand for the bike from Ebay. The rest of the bike is ready to go. It looks nice, the paint is clean, and and the engine is all polished and shiny. No Reserve auction, high bidder wins. Bill of Sale only for the machine, I have no title. If you fear high shipping costs, I can arrange delivery to the Mid-Ohio Vintage Motorcycle Days at a very reasonable price.
