Vehicle Detail
1985 CHEVY EL CAMINO SS The El Camino was built in the direct response to Ford’s Ranchero. The Ranchero really owned the market until 1959 when the El Camino debuted. As the years progressed so did the popularity of the El Camino. By 1964 GM was dabbling with the 327 and making the El Camino a one stop shop for customers who didn’t know if they wanted a car, a truck, or something that had some power. But it really wasn’t until 1968-72 when the El Camino became one of the most popular muscle cars of its era. By stuffing the 396 and 454 under the hood and providing them with enough torque to barbeque the rear tires really paved the future of the El Camino and by the mid 80’s they were as popular as ever. This 1985 Super Sport offered here today was purchased as a solid driver by its current owner and more importantly was the test car for finding a restoration company to restore his 1978 Pro Street El Camino as well. (As you will see for sale in our “other items” here on eBay.) After countless trips and numerous disappointments the owner finally lucked out when he drove this 1985 SS to legendary Harry Bates’ shop in Williamstown, NJ. The owner new instantly that this was the guy who would do his 78’s restoration the day he picked up the 85. Harry Bates did such a great job on the restoration that it inspired the owner to completely freshen up the drivetrain of this beautiful 1985 Super Sport El Camino. Please read on to find out more information and make sure you look at all the pictures that have been enlarged to show detail along with a short video of the car running. Thank you for visiting and our lines of communication are always open. Exterior: As you can see from the pictures, this 85 is stunning in its appearance. The car was restored to its original color which was based and cleared including the stripes as well. The body is solid and straight including all the floors, sheet metal, and frame. If any metal work was need or questionable it was replaced and done right. The current owner had spared no expense. All the glass is clear and chip and crack free with no hazing. The chrome has been replaced and all the trim work and emblems have been done as well. A custom GM Goodmark cowl hood was installed for added style. All new weather stripping was installed and there are no leaks or wind noises. All light, marker lights and signals work as they should all with new bulbs. New tires wrap custom aluminum wheels which enhances the style of the car. The bed has added custom bed rails with a custom bed cover that is cut out for the rails. However, if you prefer no rails, an additional bed cover that custom fits with no rails is included with the purchase of the car. This car has acquired trophies at local car shows and cruise nights. But keep in mind, it has never been concourse judged because it wasn’t built that way. It was built to drive and enjoy and it was always maintained before and after its restoration. The body was completely restored in 2005-2006 and has approx 1000 miles on the restoration. Has since been garaged and rarely used today. Please look at all the pictures available and let us know of any questions you may have. Interior: The interior for the most part is original. The seat fabric is in excellent condition however the color is faded a little. The dash and door panels are in excellent condition as are the carpets as well. The back carpet is actually new and replaced as matching color. All the gauges and lights are all in working order as well as the windows operate as they should. The headliner is also in excellent condition and the door sills have been replaced and are new. This SS was ordered with the split bench and column shift. Sitting in this car just screams 80’s. Please look at the pictures and let us know of any questions you may have. Drivetrain: Originally the car came with the 305 4bbl and 3 speed tranny. It was later swapped with a new GM 350 crate engine and attached a new TH350 tranny with a shift kit. Under the hood was kept stock with no modification to compartment at all. The original working a/c was reinstalled which blows cool but not cold. I’m sure it could use a service. The engine does have some minor upgrades such as a Holley 650 4 bbl carb with an aluminum intake and a mild cam. As we mentioned earlier, the car was bought to drive and it was rebuilt to do just that. It won’t set any speed records but is power full . It sounds and looks stock. It still has the original design of the single exhaust. A set of duals would really make this beauty sound nice. The rear is the original gear that is not a posi. All the belts and hoses are in excellent condition and the car was rebuilt in 2006 and has 1000 miles on the drivetrain rebuild. The engine is dressed in chrome and is quiet and reliable. Feel very confident in flying in and driving home, where ever that may be. Please let us know of any questions you may have. In Summation: The owner of this El Camino and the Pro Street listed in our other auction, is ready to retire and is looking forward for the next owner to enjoy these cars as he did for all these years. He’s passing the torch down to the next generation of El Camino collectors. He as well as I, hope you enjoy! Please make sure you check both our El Camino auctions here on eBay!!
