Vehicle Detail
Ideal father and son first car project! I really hate to part with my ’67 VW Bug convertable but we’re buying a house so every little bit counts when it comes to a deposit. I picked this up from the previous owner and they parked it in 1998 because the clutch was starting to slip. After doing some preliminary “wake-up” maintenance it started right up and after running a little while it settled into an idle and actually drove up and down the street although it needs a new brake master cylinder and new carb or carb cleaning. I’ve cleaned it up some and taken many pictures because a picture is worth a thousand words so read the description and check the pictures and bid like it’s yours because at no reserve someone is going to own this little diamond in the rough! Body The body is in surprisingly original condition, it’s solid with the normal rusty pan quarters (see pics). The paint under the fenders and in the apron areas is original and it looks like it has never been hit save for normal parking lot dents and a respray sometime in the past. I did find the right front fender has a skin of filler on just the corner of the fender and the pans are shot but what bug doesn’t need new pan halves or pan quarters? I’ve included some pictures of the front and rear aprons to show how original this beetle is. The front bumper is not oem and has been replaced probably when the right front fender ding happened but everything else looks original. The odometer shows 04,375 miles and the overall condition of the car suggests the mileage is 104,375 original miles. The overall interior condition supports that mileage too. All glass is OEM VW logo glass except for the windshield which is normal. The paint needs to be waxed and there are a few little starting points of rust but definitely nothing major and nothing outside the scope of what to expect for a well cared for and then stored away 46 year old VW convertible. Interior The interior is in stock condition and has benefited from being covered with a car cover since 1998. This car originally started life in California so that certainly helped the body stay clean but the rubber seals are sun dried and starting to show their 50 year old age. Front and rear seats are in good condition with no tears or wear spots and the factory rubber floor mats are in very good condition. Dash is good and the original radio delete plate is included although the previous owner installed an aftermarket radio and put speakers in the door panels. The top is good with 2 tiny pin holes and no tears but the previous owner couldn’t find the tonneau cover when I bought the car so there is no top cover. The top moves up and down stiffly (remember it's been sitting untouched for the last 15 years) and the bows are straight, the headliner is tear free too but needs a good cleaning. Miles say 04,375 and I believe the mileage is original because the rubber floor mats are in great condition and the pedal wear and kick panel wear confirms that mileage (although the clutch pedal pad only has side wear like they rode the clutch which is probably why the clutch is starting to slip). Ignition key and door key included along with clean and clear title and original 1967 purchase bill of sale from the California VW Dealership in '67! Mechanical While the engine is original (engine number H0678923) it will need a clutch as it is starting to slip. The car is drivable right now but it does need a brake master cylinder because the pedal goes to the floor. The handbrake stops the car so no worries there, you can move it around and even drive it on the street if you wanted to-I drove it on the street in traffic to confirm the odometer works. The lighting works and the turn signals work intermittently-the emergency hazards work so I suspect the turn signal switch is beginning to come alive again after sitting so long. There are no oil leaks or gas leaks and the front beam seems solid but could use some new bushings. Wiring is 98% original and has not been hacked up-this was a well cared for car. If I could keep this car I would strip the car for paint and address the few starting points of rust and have a fun little project but if your goal is a Bug convertible daily driver that you can work on here and there as time permits then this is the car for you. Do the brakes first and clutch later (both are simple on a VW) and you’ll have a very desirable daily driver to enjoy before you do the restoration it deserves.
