Vehicle Detail
1973 Honda Elsinore CR250 in exceptional “original” condition. This is the motorcycle that changed motocross as we know it. Honda came out with the Honda Elsinore in 1973 and it was such a big hit that Honda could not keep up with the orders they were getting from the dealers. They only made the “true” Elsinore motocross bikes from 1973 to 1975 in both 125 and 250 cc displacement. When I say “true Elsinores” what I am talking about is the grey, red and green striped Honda Elsinore’s. They are highly collectible and are fetching well over $5,000 to $6,000 fully restored on Ebay. This one, being the first year, is the most desirable to all collectors. There have been a couple 1974 Honda Elsinore CR 250’s on Ebay recently and one very similar to the condition that this one is in - went for $3500 – check it out in completed auctions – item number 150943934309. Another “unrestored” 1974 Elsinore had the bidding start at $4400 – item number 160921992129 and another 1974 250 that started at $4700 – item number 110979496977. All of those that were previously listed on Ebay were 1974’s and mine is the first year, 1973. This would be a great winter restoration project. I have restored several Elsinore motorcycles and they are probably one of the easiest motorcycles to restore – I just don’t have the time to restore this one – so here’s your opportunity. The bikes were named after the famous Lake Elsinore Grand Prix (LEGP) in which Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith raced and were featured in the epic motorcycle aficionado movie “On Any Sunday”. Last month on Sunday, November 11, 2012 this very bike took first place in the Vintage race in which Jeremy McGrath was also racing a 1975 Honda Elsinore 125 (he was not registered for placement – just racing for the fun and history of the LEGP). This bike is in original, never restored condition and is in great shape for being 40 years old. It has been kept in the garage all its life, but was not ridden for over 30 years. It starts on the first kick and runs great and still has a little gas left over in the tank from the LEGP. It has brand new Maxxis Motocross knobby tires on both the front and back and the only wear they have on it is from the 45 minute LEGP race last month. Both tires still show their wear nipples. The rear is a 1.10/100-18 Max X Cross.IT tire and the front is a 80/100-21 Max X Cross.IT tire. It’s in great condition, so right there tell you this bike was not ridden a lot. It was always maintained and always taken care of. The bike has matching numbers – the motor is original to this bike - Frame: #CR250M-1008989 Engine: #CR250ME1009438. It has the all of the original parts with the exception of the silencer, the hand grips and the front and rear brake levers which obviously had to be replaced. The pickle silencer will cost you a couple hundred on Ebay and original levers and grips will probably run you $50-$75 on Ebay. The front forks and rear 360 Showa shocks are original and are in excellent condition. It has the original DID rims which are in exceptional condition without being replaced. It has the original exhaust with no dings or dents in the entire exhaust and it has a very rare exhaust/skid protector that was custom made to protect the down swept exhaust, as well as the engine. Original seat is in great condition – just try to find an original 40 year old seat cover that is not torn or splitting. Both of the aforementioned CR 250’s that were on Ebay had cuts in the seat cover. It has the original gear shift lever, rear brake pedal, foot pegs, kick starter lever with the original Honda rubber boot, original handlebars, Keihin carburetor, power off switch etc. It has a 520 chain that is less than a year old. The bike has never been crashed – the frame and forks are straight. It also has the original rear and front fenders which are in great shape. The front fender also has the original CR rubber mud flap attached that is very hard to find. The front plate is the wrong color – it should be green and has some imperfections, but the side covers look almost brand new. The gas tank is original and has one small knee dent on the right side. It has the original gas cap, beather tube and petcock. The original paint and Honda emblems are very nice for 40 years. As you can tell from the pictures, this is a great bike to race, ride or restore. I have done my best to keep this bike to as close to how it came from the factory and make it enjoyable and competitive to ride. As previously stated it has mostly all original parts, except the grips, levers and pickle silencer and has never, ever been thrashed. The silencer that is currently on it is a J&R Answer spark arrestor. It runs and rides fantastic. The motorcycle will be sold as-is, with no warranties implied and it comes with a valid California title that is in my name and has not been signed and/or dated. Some people will say they have the title but it is already signed and dated and California DMV will charge you late fees from the date that it is on the title because you only have 30 days to transfer vehicles into your name in California after purchase. I also have several transport contacts and can get this Elsinore transported almost anywhere in the United States for much less that most motorcycle transporters and USHIP. I also have transported several motorcycles to Australia and Europe and I have no issues selling to anyone out of the country. I know of several international transporters and will charge only $100 to get the bike there and fifty cents a mile both ways – you pay the transporter to get it over the ocean. Please contact me with any questions. You are welcome and encouraged to start, ride and see this bike in person before the auction ends – just email me. Please check out the other motorcycles, mini bikes, parts and a very rare 1980’s Wheels of Man motorcycle rain suit that is practically in brand new condition. I used it maybe twice in sunny California. On Mar-25-13 at 09:06:48 PDT, seller added the following information: I have added a couple more pictures at the request of some interested parties. I took off the exhaust protector/skid plate and have put in some pictures of the pipe. I also added a picture of the OEM kill switch and the engine number. There was a question about the sprockets and from what I can tell - I think they are original, but if anyone knows otherwise - please let me know and I will post your response. The sprockets are not damaged. Also I said that this bike got first place in the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix "last month" - it was actually about four months ago. The LEGP is the second weekend of November. On Mar-28-13 at 10:03:06 PDT, seller added the following information: Interested bidders - there is another 1973 Honda CR 250 Elsinore that is also located in Southern California and was just posted to EBay that is very similar to the condition of my bike and it's starting bid is $3875 - check it out - item number 121087099861.
