Vehicle Detail
Up for grabs here (in a move I'll be sure to regret in later years) is one of the most wonderful cars I've every had the pleasure of owning: a 1963 Buick special four-door sedan. This isn't your average old car, and I feel that it may be one of the finest unrestored old Buicks of this era in existence. Most noteworthy perhaps is that it is extremely reliable, and is a classic that can be enjoyed and driven rather than just put on display in a museum. To me, it's the best of both worlds. Just how reliable is this car? I've personally driven it from Connecticut to Austin, Texas. This past summer I drove it from Austin to Virginia. Even after sitting for periods of time, she always starts right up without fuss and runs and drives just beautifully. The engine is smooth and quiet with plenty of power, and that is one of the truly wonderful things about this old girl: she runs every bit as good as she looks. Here are some particulars about the vehicle: PRODUCTION: The VIN number 1J1509496 indicates that this is a 4100 series V-8 Special Deluxe built at the Flint, Michigan assembly plant. Specifically, this is a model 4119 four-door deluxe sedan of which 37,695 were produced in 1963. ENGINE/MECHANICAL: Original 215 V8 aluminum block engine with Rochester 2 bbl carburetor. Most everything on this car is simple and basic - manual steering, no air conditioning, crank windows. The only thing I know of not currently working on the car is the windshield washer pump (which hasn't worked the entire time I've owned the car. It's an easy fix, just never got around to doing it.) Tires are in excellent shape, with no uneven wear and plenty of tread left. The exhaust was replaced from the Y back in 2010 and is nice and quiet. The car was inspected by the state of VA last week, and passed with no problems (as always!) The 215 V8 engine itself is a unique piece of automotive history, and a wonderful little powerhouse in my opinion. At the time, this engine was the lightest mass-production V8 in the world. It's very high power to weight ratio make it a very desirable even to this day for racing and performance, and it remains a popular conversion for MGs and others. The engine is still well supported by enthusiast clubs, specialist parts suppliers, and by shops that specialize in conversions and tuning. GM produced the engine for only three years (from 1961-1963) after which the rights and tooling were bought by Rover, where it evolved into the 3.5L used by Land Rover up until about 2002 or so. MILEAGE: Odometer currently states 23516 (may be slightly higher by auction's end as the car is currently driven frequently.) I have put just over 10,000 miles on the car since I've had it. Mileage is believed to be correct based on the overall condition of the car and of the engine internals, but it is not documented. Please bid accordingly. The gentleman I bought this car from was a Buick collector who purchased the car at auction, where it was represented as an original 13,000 mile, one-owner car. INTERIOR: The original blue interior is in flat-out gorgeous, time capsule condition in all respects. There's no two ways about it - the interior of this car is amazing, as the photos attest. I've quite literally never seen such a nice unrestored interior on a car this age. Headliner is perfect, and the carpet and all upholstery is clean and bright. BODY: The body of this car is very straight, with no dents or damage noted. All chrome is shiny and bright, though showing some very light pitting in places commensurate with the age of the car and its unrestored condition. Paint is original and, while showing it's age in places, still shines up nicely to a deep luster. I give it a hand wax about once a year and I think it looks a great. It may indeed shine up even better with a random orbital buffer, but I've always chosen to go the hand-wax route and am very happy with the results. Please note that the paint is not by any means perfect - there are plenty of little marks and scratches here and there (especially in the front from bugs, etc. but overall the condition is absolutely exceptional for a 50 year old car that has been driven and enjoyed. Rust on this car is nearly nonexistent except for a few very small areas of surface rust that are starting to show up here and there (as shown in the pictures.) The underside of the car is in great shape. In general, I take the car off of the road in the winter. If you're looking at this, chances are you know what it is and understand the rarity of a numbers matching, unmolested old Buick like this. They just don't come around that often. Please look closely at the photos, and bear in mind that this is not a show car by any means. It's a nice, highly original and dependable daily driver that can be enjoyed for years to come as-is while it appreciates in value. It would also be a terrific jumping off point for a full-on restoration. I'll leave that choice up to the new owner. :-) Please ask any and all questions and I'll do my best to answer promptly and honestly. Serious inquiries can reach me by phone at 512-484-3186 between 9am-5pm EST. Vehicle has a clear title, ready to be transferred to its new owner. TERMS AND CONDITIONS While I would much prefer a local sale and pickup with cash in hand, I'm more than willing to assist in shipping the car, too.
