Vehicle Detail
1975 Rare Cooper Enduro Dirt bike 250cc 5 speed. Assembled in Mexico. This is another bike I'm selling from my collection. I bought it back when I had more money and time. I never tried cranking it. Just needed to clean the carb, fresh gas, fresh plug and probably would fire right up. Turns over good with compression, gears shift good. It's been stored inside a dry factory building for the last 12 years or so. Looks like it was taken pretty good care of before me. The title is from 1976 from the state of Idaho issued to Glenn McFarland of Clark Fork ID. It has all the goodies headlight, speedometer, horn, compression release. The fiberglass is not in too bad of shape for the age. A little tinkering and you could have a good running piece of history. This is a no reserve auction. The high bidder wins the bike. Please make a deposit of $250 within 48 hours of auction end. If you are picking the bike up bring cash. If you want us to ship please make a bank cashier's check payable to Steve Thayer and mail within the 7 day period. If you want to pick it up in person within 48 hours just bring the full amount without making any deposit in cash to my business here in High Point NC. If you want it shipped we get $100 for the crate. Send us your address and we'll get a good trucking company shipping quote. This will be shipped from a business with a loading dock. Our hours are Monday through Friday 8 - 5. You can call me, Steve Thayer, at 336-889-8088. Some interesting notes on Cooper Motorcycles The Cooper 250 made the cover of the Vintage Motocross & Dirt Bike Quarterly VMX #18 2003 issue pages 28 through 33. wikipedia "Cooper was a brand of off-road motorcycles made in Mexico using engine parts made in Italy and later, engines made by Sachs. Imported into the United States in the early 1970s by Frank Cooper and sold as Cooper. Frank Cooper was a dealer for Maico when he contracted with Mexican motorcycle company, Islo to produce an Enduro and also a motocross model. Cooper made a "street legal"Enduro 250 cc bike using a Yamaha 250 2 cycle engine in addition to other bikes. The design was by Malcolm Smith. It had some inherent issues as it came from the factory as the drive sprocket was too large causing the chain to wear into the engine case. While the bike handled well, it wasn't up to the standards of the Suzuki TM250 or Huskys of the same time period. The workmanship was substandard (former dealer in 1973) Islo also made a trials bike from 1971 - 1975 called GRM (Grapevine Racing Motors) that was imported to the USA, for Bill Grapevine, who designed the bike. Islo also supplied the engines for California's Jones Motorsports who had the AMMEX motorcycle franchise. The Islo manufacturing facilities and name were bought by Honda around 1982. Since 2000, the brand has resurfaced in the Mexican market under the ownership of Moto Road S.A. de C.V.; the same company that currently owns the Carabela motorcycle brand." Some info off the thumpertalk forum "Born in Mexico in the early 1970's, Cooper Motorcycles, produced by Frank Cooper, were a romantic melody of Italian Engines that were placed into Cooper's enduro and motorcross frames. Cooper Motorcycles were assembled and their frames produced in the Islo Manufacturing facilities in Mexico and exported to the United States as an affordable off-road motorcycle. During the early 1970's Cooper in conjunction with Islo, made a trial bike called the Grapvine Racing Machine or commonly known as the GRM, which was a specially designed motorcycle by and for Bill Grapevine. They also supplied motors to a Californian motorcycle company known as Jones Motorsports. Jones Motorsports also owned the franchise for AMMEX Motorcycles. In 1982 the Cooper Motorcycle along with Islo Manufacturing were bought by the Honda corporation and closed their doors forever. Honda has never reproduced their motorcycles as the purchase was for the cheap labour in Mexico where they could produce their own lines of motorcycles for U.S. export." http://en.wikipedia....8motorcycles%29 goatbrother Posted 26 August 2009 - 11:50 AM #8 As I remember the top ends were a copy from the Yamaha's and the bottom end was a loose copy of a Maico. A strange combination for sure. 76xtdrvr Posted 26 August 2009 - 02:27 PM #9 Quote As I remember the top ends were a copy from the Yamaha's I seem to recall this too. A Yamaha piston from the same era may fit as a replacement. I also think your model is the Enduro, not mx. The mx had a low pipe. Check/replace your handlebar mounting bolts. Mine were extremely soft and stripped easily. I can't remember much else. Nice looking bike by the way. docdoughe777 Posted 06 April 2011 - 09:04 AM #10 A YAMAHA DT-1 PISTON WORKS GREAT. THERE IS A PEEP OVERFILL SCREW ON THE SIDE. THE SWING ARM WILL BEND UNDER HARD CONDITIONS. EVEN THOUGH SMALL LIKE A HONDA S-90, TRANSMISSION ALWAYS WORKED FINE. ONE OF THE JONES BROTHERS RACED OUR COOPER AT A LOCAL TRACK LEADING MOST OF THE TIME. AT A INFORMAL DIRT GET TOGETHER` A STOCK COOPER OUTRAN ALL 250'S. ON THE TRAILS THAT BIG CRANK(like a 500 single) made the coop a joy to ride. scalejockey Posted 06 April 2011 - 06:11 PM #11 Gotta love a two year old thread pulled from the dead pile. but still ,,good info. 777 pablohoney Posted 07 April 2011 - 05:48 PM #12 wow, thanks for the info, I actually sold the bike shortly after I started this thread to a vintage motocross museum. But still interesting.
