Vehicle Detail

1961 BMW R50S - Restoration Project Bike - Complete & Correct Bike Up for auction is a running used 1961 BMW R50S 500cc motorcycle with 22,096 miles on the odometer. The bike has all of the correct original parts that separate it from the lower performance R50/2 and is VIN: 564549 with only 1634 of these produced between 1960 and 1962. All of the numbers match at the frame, head stock plate and motor. The bike was apparently repainted at some point in its life and the current finishes are a worn so this is a great restoration project bike. The bike has the correct R50S only parts as follows: 1/26/71 & 1/26/72 Bing Carburetors, R50S only Intake tubes, Sport Air Filter without choke (incorrectly painted black), R50S original flared header pipes with finned nuts, R50S heads and valve covers, R50S & R69S Hydraulic Steering Damper, R50S 7/25 Ratio Rear Drive, R50S 120 mph Speedometer w/1.38 ratio and shift speeds of 34, 53 & 78 mph indicated on the dial of the speedometer. This is an early example and does not have the R50S chrome logo on the rear fender. We removed the heads to check the condition of the pistons and cylinders and the piston size is 68.92mm indicating that the bore is 1st oversize. The heads and pistons were very clean so we believe that the motor has not been run since the top end was done. The heads were not tightened or torqued so they have been set correctly and the valves adjusted. The valve covers have some rash but are correct R50S parts and the front motor cover has been dented and has some cracks showing on the inside so it will need repair. The bike had not been run since the early 80’s and it started eventually and ran but will need a thorough tuning and going over as the carburetors are worn and out of tune. We would recommend that the purchaser treats this bike as a restoration project and completely goes through the bike and motor from one end to the other and not put it on the road until it has been completely checked over. The bike shifts fine on the bench all of the controls and lighting work. The bike will need new tires as the current ones are old and weather checked. The front and rear wheels do not match as the front is a steel rim and the rear is the alloy rim. The mufflers are new reproduction items that came with the bike and are the correct larger R69S units. The center stand tab will need repair but otherwise works fine. There is a broken rear passenger footpeg mount on the right side of the frame and the frame will need to be repaired where someone drilled a hole through the tube for the peg. The head light shell has a shallow dent on the top right as pictured. The handlebar is the correct US model as this bike was a USA sold bike. There are mostly original fasteners on the bike with a few metric hardware store pieces here and there but overall the bike is very original and correct where it needs to be. I have posted loads of photos that tell the story better than words so please let them load as it may take a few moments. We are posting this note since Ebay has been encouraging Buyers to use their new Buyer Protection Program. What Ebay only shows in the fine print is that any Buyer Dispute opened under this new system is a Negative strike against the Seller regardless of merit or outcome. The strike is counted against the Seller's DSR and lowers the ratings for the Seller. The impact of this is much higher Seller fees and lower ratings by Ebay for the Seller. Please contact us first and let us work out any issues or problems before resorting to the Buyer Protection Program. Thanks from the guys at Goldiesmc! On Oct-26-12 at 07:52:31 PDT, seller added the following information: Also Please note that the original fuel petcock will be included with the bike with the split outlets on the bottom. I needs to be rebuilt as it leaks from the face but is the original part.
