Vehicle Detail

1978 CORVETTE PACE CAR A Little History There is no need for long descriptions about the car, so how about a little history about the 1978 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Pace Car. Exactly 6,502 Pace Car Replicas were built in 1978. Why 6,502? Well, Chevrolet initially planned to build only 300 units. However, Chevrolet quickly realized that allocating 300 units to their 6,502 dealers would be very difficult if not impossible. The “big wigs” finally decided to allocate 1 car per Chevrolet dealership. Thus, 6,502 vehicles were produced! Production began in March of 1978 and finished approximately May 21, 1978. This beauty was the 4,050rd Pace Car produced!! The car paced the Indianapolis 500 race on May 28th 1978. It was the first Corvette in history to do so. (It was also the first stock car in history that needed no modifications to run at the required speeds.) In preparation, the dealers were not allowed to sell the cars before May 30th, 1978. There was tremendous press about these cars and the public loved every minute of it! As you can imagine, this “hoopla” created quite a demand for these cars. As a result, the prices soared out of sight when they finally hit the market. In fact, the Wall Street Journal reported that people were paying as much as $35,000 to $40,000.00 (in 1978!!) for a car that had a base window sticker of $13,653.21. $13,000 to $14,000 was quite a premium already considering the base Corvette had a sticker price of only $9,351.89. Enough history!! Let me tell you a little about this amazing car! Exterior: The paint is what I would call driver quality. It’s a good 10 footer. It is starting to show its age and has “spider webbing” on portions of the hood and fenders. I can also see evidence of a small repair on the driver’s door where it meets the fender. The nose of the front bumper has several “webs” in it. The tires and wheels are in great shape as are the T-tops. Engine: L-48, numbers matching. It is in great shape with recent tune up done. It drives STRONG!! No leaks or drips. Starts first try EVERY TIME! It is matted to an automatic transmission. Transmission: The original transmission was replaced with an after-market performance transmission from BOWTIE Overdrives. This cost almost $1,400 and boy does it make a difference!! The increased performance over the original set-up is PHENOMENAL! I have thoroughly enjoyed the added performance, and I’m sure you will too. (I do not have the original transmission) Suspension: The car sits approximately 1 inch lower than stock. This also makes a tremendous difference in the handling versus the original set-up. The car handles as though it is on rails! Interior: Overall, the silver interior is in great shape. There are no cracks in the dash. The driver seat shows some wear. ALL GAUGES WORK even the clock. The headlights, power windows, speedometer, fuel gauge, and cruise control are all in working order. I noticed the power lock on the passenger side does not work. It has an after-market radio. The A/C works, but could use a little R-12. The carpeting is in nice shape. There are no stains, rips, or discoloration. Exhaust: New from front to back! Drive: The car drives very well. There are no squeaks, creeks, rattles, or rolls. It has plenty of go! It handles as though on rails and overall is a blast to drive!! Believe me; you will enjoy driving this car! Documentation: I have what I believe to be the original window sticker for the car as well as the tank sticker (it is in several pieces, but legible). However, I do not have any of the Indy 500 decals. I believe the car has resided in California from day 1. (In fact, it still has the period correct blue and yellow California plates.) Therefore, it has NO RUST issues whatsoever! The frame is absolutely ROCK SOLID! This car turns heads wherever it goes!! If you are shy, do not bid!! I constantly find myself engaging in conversations about the car whenever I drive it! It would make a nice addition to your collection, or an excellent weekend cruiser! On Oct-12-12 at 11:53:36 PDT, seller added the following information: I've received several inquiries regarding the reserve. I will NOT disclose it. I may consider ending the auction if I receive an offer close to it, otherwise, I will let the auction run its course. Also, if the reserve is not met, I will consider selling the car to the highest bidder. THANKS FOR LOOKING!!!!!
