From the December, 1999 issue of Motor Trend At the risk of spoiling the suspense, you're looking at the quickest, fastest, best-handling, and, quite simply, the baddest sport/utility on the planet. Empirically speaking, the ML55 AMG will run 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds, blitz the quarter mile in 14.8 ticks at 94.6 mph, top out at a claimed 150 mph, and stop from 60 mph in just 124 feet. A true international team effort, each ML55 begins life at the AMG facility in Germany where all the engine and chassis modifications are performed. This work in progress then travels to the M-Class factory in Alabama for final assembly, which occurs in a specially dedicated work area. Powering the ML55 is a stroked version of the V-8 used in the new S500. Along with a displacement bump from 5.0 to 5.4-plus liters via a longer-throw forged-steel crank, it gains dual-path intake plumbing, lightweight modular cams, higher-rate valve springs, matched-weight pistons and rods, plus recalibrated fuel injectors and a massaged ECU. The result is 342 horses at 5500 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque from 2800-4500 revs. (Which gives it 40 more ponies and 11 percent more twist than an S500.) A five-speed automatic transmission with M-B's slick TouchShift manual gearchange feature is paired with the standard M-Class all-wheel-drive system, electronic stability program, and traction control to ensure the vehicle's maximum overachiever status. Sharpening the ML55's handling and responsiveness are stiffer springs and shocks plus a larger front anti-roll bar-along with AMG-spec five-spoke cast alloy wheels shod with 285/50WR16 Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tires. This 4653-pound all-season intimidator also gets massively oversize front and rear disc brakes with ABS and M-B's Brake Assist. Visually, the ML55 typifies all AMG-tweaked Mercedes offerings. Purposefully understated, it sports more aggressive front/rear fascias, bulgy fender flares, unique rocker panels and the aforementioned bespoke wheels and tires along with Xenon headlamps, integrated foglamps, classic M-B "power domes" on the hood, and dual chrome exhaust outlets. Interior highlights include deeply bolstered sport buckets, white-faced instruments, and a new integrated NAV/audio system. On the road, the ML55 proved nothing short of spectacular. Although its speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering still lacks proper centering action at low velocities, there's precious little else to fault. Docile around town, it transitions from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde at the press of a pedal. A relatively high center of gravity conspires with its tendency to lift its inside rear wheel to limit maximum lateral acceleration to 0.75 g, but the ML55 still corners with the confidence of many a sport sedan, while retaining quite acceptable ride compliance. Mercedes expects to sell 1500 ML55s here next year, about half the worldwide total. Price of joining that rather exclusive owners club will be $64,900. But for those who can afford the tariff, there's simply nothing else like it on-or off-the road today.
