It wasn’t long ago that Darell from Concord, N.C., was looking for the perfect VW project car. He wanted to build a true custom, something that was different from the rest, a showpiece that would stand out from the crowd. He found the answer ina former show car, one that had seen better days, but already had many of the modifications he was looking for. After taking many show trophies, this chopped 56’ Oval was eventually regulated to a drivers status. When Darell found it, it was on its second owner and sitting in a backyard, its engine rusted, interior in rags, and windows busted. But it had many of the features that he was looking for – chopped top, frenched 39 Ford taillights, license plate box, filled horn grilles, and exhaust cut outs, and frenched antenna in the rear. A deal was made, and Darell towed the 56 home. Once there, he started laying out his strategy for bringing this VW back to show winning status. His first stop was at Fender Benders in Charlotte, N.C. where Fred Propst and his crew disassembled the car. All glass was removed, along with the doors, fenders, and interior, until the only thing left was a shell. The body and parts were then sanded and smoothed to perfection, and finally painted Guards Red by Propst, using Dupont’s Chrombase, followed by four coats ofclear. Once dried, it was buffed to a bright finish. Although not seen, flames were painted underneath the floorpan by Scott Andrews, and clear coated. Next the car was taken to George’s trim shop in Kannapolis, N.C., where a wild red and black crushed velvet interior was made and installed. Features of the interior include recovered Scat Procar Seats, Royal Deluxe door handles from Julianao’s, Gene Berg locking shifter, Formuling France steering wheel, and a rear view mirror from a Pontiac Sunbird. An aluminum panel was fitted to the dash and filled with a variety of VDO gauges, and a Kenwood CD player. Scat’s center console houses a VDO clock and there is a polished billet fire extinguisher, new tinted glass, new window rubber, door regulators, and billet aluminum wipers. The rear seat was also removed, and replaced with wood panels that were covered with matching red and black crush velvet. Engine building was handled by Steve Bowers, who assembled a stout 2110cc screamer. (The engine specs are listed above) Other details of this outstanding Oval include Neal billet aluminum disc brakes all around with Wilwood calipers up front and a combination of Wilwood and Neal calipers in the rear, Sway-A-Way sway bars both front and rear, and polished aluminum centerline wheels with Firestone rubber 135s and 185s. It took 2 1/2 years to complete this project and it has won 5 best of shows and several first place finishes! Please take the time to look at the many pictures. Radio faceplate is missing Some of the enclosed pictures are from Southern Hot Rods, the company I bought this car from many years ago. This rod is way over the top – folks will stare everywhere you go. If you want a very cherry unique daily driver, this is it.
