Vehicle Detail
1966 FORD MUSTANG On April 16th, 1964 at 9:30 pm on channels ABC, CBS, and NBC Ford Motor Corporation aired a commercial introducing the 1964 ½ Ford Mustang. It created such a frenzy at the dealerships the next day, everyone wanted to be the first to own the new Mustang. And for those that couldn’t afford to buy one or were too young to drive, they actually went to see it in person at the World’s Fair in New York. You couldn’t get any more American than the Mustang. It was a family sports car that had it all. Bucket seats, floor shifter and large enough to seat 4 but small enough to be a great looking sports car. Lee Iaccoca listened, watched and learned what America needed and challenged his designers and engineers to build a car that fit around the American lifestyle. The launch of the Mustang was so successful that it sold 22,000 units the very next day after the commercial aired. For the 7 or so months left in 1964 Ford had sold over 263,000 units and nearly doubled that in 1965 by selling more than 418,000 units. By 1966 over 607,000 Mustangs were produced and sold breaking the million mark after only18 months since its debut. It was certain that Mustang was here to stay and assured us that this car would never get side tracked from its original intent and from 1964 to 2012 Mustang stayed true to its heritage. This 1966 Mustang that appears here today, encompasses everything a Mustang should have been back in 1966, but it was built with some modern day engineering and muscle to make this a very rare and unique vehicle for any Mustang collector. Please read to find out all about this stunning 1966 Mustang. Exterior: Originally the exterior of the car came in red with a black interior. But the owner decided that if he was going to restore it, he would do it in probably one of the rarest color combinations that was available in 1966. The combination included Tahoe Turquoise with Parchment interior and a Parchment Vinyl Top. From our research, it shows that only 9% of 66 Mustangs were produced in this color combination with the vinyl top. As you walk around the exterior of the vehicle, the base coat clear coat looks very nice. Is it perfect? No, but I would say that its above average and a strong driver quality. A good wet sand and buff would bring out the luster and depth in the paint, but still looks very nice as it sits. The chrome bumpers are new and all the bright work shines excellent. I will say the front lower valence under the front bumper needs replacing. Up close you can see some dings and the owner does admit that they should have replaced it at the time of restoration. But underneath the paint, the car was stripped down to metal, the whole car was primered in epoxy, new door skins were installed but amazingly the car was pretty solid. The rear sub frame was replaced and any panels that needed work were repaired with metal. I can’t stress it enough, the car presents beautifully, but not 100% show quality. Some of the emblems were not installed because the owner wanted it to be different from the rest. The vinyl top was installed at the time of restoration and still is in new condition. Restoration was completed about 7 years ago and only has around 100 miles on it. Driven to local car shows only. Otherwise it sat, under a cover in a climate controlled garage. Please look at the pictures below and let us know of any questions. I do have photo’s and some documentation on the restoration that will go with the purchase of the vehicle. Interior: As you can see from the pictures, the interior show’s beautifully. The Parchment color really compliments the turquoise. The interior was professionally upholstered and still shows in like new condition. The dash was painted parchment too and is contrasted by the turquoise dash. The owner did admit that the speaker cover didn’t grow on him like he thought it would and he claims he should have painted that turquoise too. But, what you see is what you get. A few things the interior needs, would be a nice detail to the carpets as they were never really cleaned after the shows, or after his grandson would play in it. And the headliner would need replacement. A new headliner does come with the purchase, but it will remain uninstalled in the box. The sun visors do need to be reinstalled and the radio needs speaker hooked up and antenna. The windows do operate but could use a better realignment for easier use. But overall an excellent interior only needing very minor tinkering to make perfect. Please look at the pictures and let us know of any questions. Drivetrain: This is where the magic happens. The car sounded so spectacular I had to include a video of it running to prove to you the sound that comes out of this straight 6. The original engine was completely rebuilt and bored .60 over. The head was decked .30 over and a Clifford Dual Exhaust Header System enabled you to get true dual exhaust including dual flowmasters out of a straight 6 cylinder engine. This combination makes the 6 cylinder sound better than some 8 cylinders out there. Just when you thought that was as good as you were gonna get, the original 3 Speed Syncro Tranny was removed(but still will come with the purchase of the car) and a T5 5 Speed box was installed enabling you to shift through 5 gears and obtain close to 30 mpg on the highway. And that is not an exaggeration!!! In addition the suspension has been completely replaced along with all new wheel cylinders, brakes, bushings and tires. The engine does come with the original valve cover and air cleaner. Also, just wanted to mention, the windshield washers are not hooked up. This is very well one of the most drivable 1966 Mustangs that I have ever had the pleasure of driving. This is really a very special set up, making it probably the only Straight 6 5 speed in existence. And I know for sure, no other 6 cylinder sounds like this. Although this car is not perfect, it will only take a few weekends of tinkering to make it 100%. This car is ready to be driven!!
