Vehicle Detail
1959 220S Mercedes Benz Hello All, I am no mechanic and have over 100 images of this car (and the parts that I have purchased for this project) that you can view at http://winthersaxe.jalbum.net. The cars provenance is sketchy at best. I purchased the car in October 2008 and the owner stated the car was in drivable condition when I purchased it…it was not. As with all cars purchased for restoration, one can never recoup what has been injected into a beloved car. The car supposedly was a taxi in Mexico, this would explain the Frankenstein like replacements of numerous parts under the hood. The car somehow immigrated to Washington State and then went through several hands (in quick succession) before it landed in mine. At some point in time, the cars original engine was replaced with a MB 280 engine and is now an automatic. The car also exhibits interesting upholstery and green shag carpeting (not of my choosing, but came with the car). Once the car was in my hands, my main goal was to make this vehicle into a daily driver, so my focus was on mechanical repairs, not the optical bling associated with paint and upholstery. I did manage to restore the arm rests myself. But due to the economy and my not wanting this car to sit any longer, it’s time for the car to find a new adoptive parent(s) who can continue the restoration. I would also like to interject here. It is only by the good humor and help that I received from the International Ponton Owners Group (IPOG) that this project made it as far as it did. If you haven’t heard of this group, please visit them at http://www.mbzponton.org/index.html. This group is a collective mind trust of information pertaining to all things Ponton, the 1953-1962 Mercedes Benz body style produced after World War II. The car was a joy to drive, I always felt like I was driving in a parade. Folks would stop and stare, I would offer a wave and they would wave back. The car was in driving condition until two summers ago. Even though I paid to have the fuel pump replaced in 2009, it’s quite possible that’s what went wrong again. I have clear title and a pink slip on this car. Tags are paid for and current until Oct 2012. The following was performed on the car (not by me, I’m no mechanic, I have the original receipts): 2009 June: Had wiring corrected for primary ignition, replaced coil, replaced points, set ignition dwell and timing, replaced faulty thermostat, replaced carburetor idle stop solenoid, set fuel mixture and idle speed. Removed looped mess of un-needed vacuum lines and cap ports. Changed engine oil and filter. Replaced faulty neutral safety switch and installed wiring between switch and starter. Wired reverse lights. Installed aftermarket temperature gauge and rebuilt carburetor. 2009 September: Rebuilt brake booster assembly. 2009 October: Installed steering parts, R&R distributor. 2009 December: replaced worn tie rods, replaced driveshaft (the one that came with the car was dangerously too short, replaced with correct length). 2010 January: carburetor was cleaned and adjusted, the fuel lines were flushed out, fuel pump was replaced, replaced battery. The gas tank was repaired, renewed and reinstalled. A new sender unit was installed at the same time as gas tank. The battery was replaced on 1/27/2010, but since the car has been sitting for two years, I’m not sure of it’s ability to hold a charge. Odometer does not work. Gas Gauge still does not work (even though a new sender unit was installed). Exhaust manifold is cracked and needs replacement. In an attempt to stop leaks, a previous owner smeared some sort of silicone sealant around the front window rubber. The window seals seem to be original and need replacement. The paint is not original, but most likely was originally black and is now Berlin Brown. Who ever painted it last did a very cheap job. The paint on the bonnet shows signs of rubbing and has a few holes drilled in the top (perhaps for a taxi sign, I just don’t know). There is one area of body damage which also damaged an important piece of chrome/trim. I have a replacement trim piece, so when the car does go through a restoration, this piece is there and ready for the next owner. When you view the image album, you will notice that I have kept the bottom of the door panels off for easy viewing of the only rust through that I know of which is on the bottom of three of the door wells. One tire is starting to lose air, but the car should be able to roll nicely. The horns are not connected to the steering column, but they work, I’ve heard them and they are quite loud (ear splitting loud). The upholstery, headliner and carpeting are functional and funky looking, but not original. I have the original ignition key, a key for the fuel tank door lock, and a key for the trunk. The trunk lock does not work and the locks on the doors work, but I don’t have a key for them. The window glass seems to be all original but there is a slight hazing on the bottom of the front window. The upholstery of course is not original, and the upholstery on the front seats are a virtual archeological dig of interesting materials, right down to some sort of faux alligator material. Please feel free to contact me with questions (even though I cannot answer questions pertaining to the mechanicals on this car). I am hoping the images can speak volumes pertaining to the cars condition, also, please come and inspect the car. It has been in “dry dock” for the last two years, covered and under a carport. All replacement parts have been stored in the trunk and not in the interior of the car, gosh, I wouldn’t want to ruin it’s rather “interesting” upholstery.
