Vehicle Detail

You’re looking at the best condition Toyota FJ Cruiser in northern Uganda, owned by a Toyota enthusiast with years of auto maintenance, welding, and fabrication experience. Everything on this truck has been taken care of – find me another Toyota in this country that has had an oil change every 3,000 miles. I would love to keep this truck, but was just offered a teaching position at a university in a major U.S. city where owning this truck doesn’t make a lot of sense. Hence, it’s time to find a good home for it. Taxes: This vehicle is on white TAX PAID plates, UAQ 395R. This means the tax was already paid on import and you do not owe a big tax when you purchase the vehicle, unlike buying a Landcruiser from an NGO or GO (where you may owe thousands of dollars in taxes upon registration with URA!). The basics: You’re looking at a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser with the four liter 1GR-FE engine and left-hand-drive. It seats four adults in comfort, but you could remove the rear seats and have more cargo space. It has less than 60,000 miles and less than 10,000 of those miles were driven in Uganda. It is four-wheel-drive with low-range and an electronic rear locking differential – never get stuck, even in the wet season! It has power windows and locks, an automatic transmission, and the air conditioning blows cold even at the height of the dry season! It has a vented hood, larger radiator, and transmission cooler with nearly twice the cooling capacity of the factory system; this truck was built to go back and forth between Gulu, Juba, and anywhere else – even in the hottest temperatures. Long-term: This vehicle is U.S. legal and you can ship it back with you to the U.S., Canada, or Europe when your project is done here in Uganda. It is one of the most reliable vehicles in town and has been driven all around: Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The goodies: I spent six months modifying this vehicle when I learned I was coming to Uganda with no expense spared. It has an Old Man Emu suspension (3” Heavy Duty), which is the suspension used by safari companies and 4x4’s in the Australian outback. It’s equipped with 285/75R16 BF Goodrich KM2 tires (including a full-sized spare) on AT Mojave Teflon-coated wheels (never worry about mud sticking to your wheels again). The tires have over 60% tread depth remaining. The front and rear bumpers are welded from .125” steel plate and 3/16” plate for the area around the winch mount. The side steps (rock sliders) are built from DOM tubing and powdercoated to match the truck. It is equipped with a WARN PowerPlant system, with a 9,000 lb winch (steel cable, roller fairlead) and on-board air compressor (can be used to air up tires or to run small air tools). It has four 110v U.S.-style electrical sockets on a large, dedicated inverter circuit for charging those laptops and cameras while out on fieldwork. It has Hella halogen fog lights, XMITTER four-LED lights on the rack for lighting the edges of the road, and a huge XMITTER LED light bar that puts out more than ten times the light of the standard high-beams. Other stuff: I’m including a Hi-Lift jack, the off-road Hi-Lift jack base, and quick-release tubing for the on-board air compressor. I’ll also spend an hour with the new owner going over the vehicle and teaching any basic vehicle recovery techniques or demonstrating how the winch works, if you have not owned a vehicle with a winch before. The vehicle is prewired for any current-generation Garmin Nuvi navigation unit (just plug yours in), though I’ll be taking mine back to the U.S. It is also set up for CB radio with a Firestik II antenna; just wire up your CB unit and you’re ready to go. Auction type: This is a NO RESERVE auction. The highest bidder will win and will be expected to pay within 72 hours via bank transfer to a U.S. account. The winning bidder will then take delivery of the vehicle at the parking lot of the Acholi Inn on July 13, 2012. Good luck. Paperwork: All paperwork is included with the vehicle, including maintenance records and the original bill of sale information allowing you to show chain of title back to the United States, in case you ever need to register the vehicle outside Uganda. Delivery: The owner will take delivery of the vehicle in the parking lot of the Acholi Inn in Senior Quarters in Gulu, Uganda at noon on July 13, 2012. Contact: Do you have questions? Want to check it out in person in Gulu? Email me at rhetoric (at) uchicago (dot) edu and let’s discuss.
