Vehicle Detail
1936 Ford Coupe – time warp in all steel!! I am listing 1936 Ford Coupe for a friend (Gail) who has inherited this car from her brother and never gotten around to drive it more than a few times around town. From the little we know this car was fully restored in the 80-ies and going by it’s present condition they did a great job. Gail’s brother purchased the car in the early nineties and drove it only very seldom; mostly to local car shows. When Gail owned it she kept it running; detailed and registered but is now not able to store the car anymore and asked me to sell it for her. I looked it over in my shop and saw it needed only very few things to make it a good driver again. The gas tank needed replacing, it needed new tires, some seals and the A/C charged – which all got done. As it is now; this is NOT a 100-point show car; it shows it’s age in several areas however looks very sharp and has all the good stuff anyone would want to make a 36 Ford a driver. Basically, an all original, non chopped, all steel, no rust 1936 Ford Coupe with a 350 4BBL V8, Automatic, cruise, power steering, power (disc) brakes and modern A/C. When Gail’s brother purchased the car, it had seen a restoration by the previous owner as he only wanted to drive and not spend (too much) time in the shop. The car has a dry California heritage and there is no plastic used on this car. The quality of the work was very good, she kept it nicely detailed for all those years and the paint is still very glossy, fat and super smooth. After Gail attained the car; she drove it a handful of times but lost interest soon and it sat for many years in dry storage in Los Angeles. Even though the stickers are now expired, she has the current registration in hand. The VIN is 2247825 which makes it a true 68hp V8 1936 Ford with correct identity. It has a clear California title, I could not find any rust or previous accident damage. The sides are very straight, not the “Earl Scheib” wavy-ness you see on so many cars, the glossy paint makes sure you would see every flaw. I am not trying to make this car into a show car, it does have it’s (paint) flaws which I will try to describe and show as well as I can. The finish is very good, it is obvious the car was prepped very well and all the parts were off when it was restored. I see no evidence of welds and the paint is applied well in hidden areas like window corners and seams. The doors tell most about quality of work and that is why I wanted to show them off very clearly. Obviously this is not a Pebble Beach restoration but there is no nasty overspray or rusty seams filled with bondo and then painted! I installed new top door seals as the old ones were hard a stone – there was no rust in the rails again proving how dry and honest this car is. The door jambs could need some detailing as you can see, I will leave that to the new owner. The door locks work well and the windows roll up and down very good. The side glass is cracked even though it does not show very well with the tint. It does not interfere with their operation – if the new owner wants to replace them that is up to him/her. The doors have functional cat whiskers and do not rattle while driving – they close well and I see the hinges have been replaced before, they have no play at all. The windshield frame has been powder coated to go with the blacked out grille and has nice, tinted glass with a new seal. The opening mechanism works fine and it still holds an ancient “Southern California Timing Association” decal on it. The windshield wiper works but will need a new rubber refill. The cowl vent works great and has a good seal. The grille is an NOS unit that has been powder coated and blacked out to “hide” the electric fan and radiator and go with the windshield frame. It is very straight and fits well, the moldings are very nice and the “Ford” emblem I just put in. The chrome ornament is extremely nice, I’m sure it is new because of that. The hood is straight, works well and has great moldings. There is NO rust in this hood, the inside does not shine like the outside but is in great condition with perfect seams. The headlight have the original Ford logo and have great original glass and work well. The turn signal indicators are mounted behind the horn covers – which are very nice. The left tail light stanchion has a nice locking “Ford” logo gas cap and the right one has the rumble seat step and both are very stable. The rumble seat and gutter are very solid and have a good seal, it closes nice without rubbing. I installed a new battery which is mounted behind the passenger seat and has a main cut off. The floor ans sides are extremely solid as the next pictures indicate. Compared to other sellers I show VERY detailed and up close pictures and will hide no details I know - here are the "weak" points which are visible: I can see several paint chips, which are mostly situated around the hood area and anyone who has ever owner a car with this hood (opening) system will know there is no way to avoid such. I see some evidence of a previous (partial) paint job but see no indications of serious accident damage in those areas. I’m also showing the inside of the hood area so you see it was painted everywhere and time has done little to destroy it. There is no rust in the seams, showing off a perfect dry heritage. Along the rear wheel wells I see a few hairline cracks; they are hard to see and are not open. I see no accident damage there, not even inside the fender. There is also a small paint crack at the RH fender area and a stress crack in the LH door post as pictured. There is old pinstriping on the body which shows some wear from polishing but mostly still presents very nice. The roof cover looks like new, feels very soft; fits well and does not rattle. The wheels, they obviously have rust in the outer rim and because they are such a personal item I have left them on the car – this is what the car came with in the 80-ies and it will be up to the owner to change them or rechrome / paint them to his/her liking. Right now they do not look too bad, the centers are painted car color. They are shod with new P235/70/R15 rear and P195/60R15 rear. They ride very nice! The engine is a 1977 Chevrolet 350 CID V8 motor coupled to a 3-speed automatic transmission and both run excellent, here are the details for the car’s mechanicals: It comes with it’s original cast iron intake manifold and a 4BBL Quadrajet carb. It has new cast aluminum valve covers and air cleaner housing installed. It has the original distributor with a chrome coil, has the original cast iron exhaust manifolds that end in a dual system with chrome tips. Nothing really high performance, just a good running unit that makes this car a pleasure to drive. The radiator shows no signs of overheating and the electric fan works fine. The hoses and belts look good and the fuel pump is electric, it has an alternator and a Vintage Air Conditioning. The frame rails are very clean and the firewall has great, shiny paint. The engine compartment looks nice, no weird additions and functional. I took it out on a hot California day (87F) and this car stayed cool on the surface streets and Freeways. No overheating, it performed like a champ. It acts a little cold blooded and I think the carb would need a new accelerator pump, there is no gas leak at all and the transmission shifts nice. The interior is in very nice condition and built into the stock hardware, it has the following improvements: Matching vinyl seat covers, door panels and headliner – similar upholstery in the rumble seat area. The are matching seat belts and a newer steering column with billet Moto-Lita steering wheel which is cloth covered. It has working VDO Oil pressure, coolant temperature and speedo added, the speedometer does not work now. The dash is nicely detailed and it has an added turn signal switch that works well. The wood on the dash looks a bit cheesy but is in nice condition and is in tone with an 80-ies time warp. The new owner can change that if he/she chooses so. The inner window moldings were chromed and look very nice. The brakes are dual system with all not too many miles on them, front discs on a dropped axle that feel safe and do not pull. The LH front king pin has some play but all have lube points and I am sure it needs a lube job. The master cylinder sits under the drivers seat, the hoses feel good and there are no leaks. The rear end is a reinforced 10-bolt unit without any leaks and a tight feel. I’m not real sure about what it is. It has an older dual exhaust system which sounds good and is not loud – gives the car a nice soft rumble. The underbody of this car is as nice as you can find it; totally rust- and accident free and non-factory undercoated shows off how great the floors are. It has had a new gas tank installed, including a new electric fuel pump which works well. Obviously the original bumpers have been taken off, however they are available with the original brackets. The rear bumper is pretty good and needs rechroming but the front bumper is rusty and can maybe be used for parts. If anyone is interested I can make pictures. No other parts are included, paperwork is clear and the car can be inspected at any time. Thank you. I have tried to represent the vehicle as good as possible. Please review the pictures and email me if there are still open questions, I'm happy to reply. I can help with finding a shipper to either Overseas or East Coast, just contact me about it. (For overseas buyers: Taking the car to the docks for you will be an additional $150, we've done it many times.) MY CONDITIONS - VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ !!! Please do not ask what the reserve is--this is an auction. The title is free and clear and ready to be signed over, US buyers have to go through DMV. No trades are accepted and I reserve the right to end the auction early for any reason whatsoever. If you have no feedback or more than 3% negative fb, I will cancel your bid automatically before auction's end if you don't contact me to get clearance to bid--no exceptions! This shouldn't be a problem for most of you, but I must ascertain if you are a serious bidder or not, as I don't want to list the car again. All prospective purchasers agree that this description is solely for convenience, and is not part of any contract of sale for the vehicle. My description is my opinion only, and should not be considered a complete description of any or all faults, and may not be relied upon, taken as fact or otherwise considered a representation or warranty or any sort. The car is sold as-is, where-is with all faults known or unknown. These should only be considered the ramblings of a guy who likes old cars. Please see the car in person or send a representative for inspection. A pre-purchase inspection is strongly encouraged and I can happily take the car to one of the well-known nearby shops if you organize and pay for a PPI. Remember, this is a 75+ year old car that has been used; it is not showroom new. If you have ever had a classic vehicle, or you are considering owning one, you should understand that there is an almost endless list of repairs, improvements, corrections and details that can be attended to. Like the car, I am old too, so I may have forgotten things that are important to you. That’s why you should send someone to inspect this or any car you are considering purchasing. I apologize for this lawyerly disclaimer, but we live in strange times. Even though I have attempted to identify all the flaws I know of; please realize you are buying a 75 year old car, and so you should not expect it to be exactly like a 75 day old car! There may be minor flaws or features of the car that I did not catch, I just cannot possibly cover every detail that might be a concern to every buyer. The car comes with no warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. Like all Classic cars, you should expect normal wear and tinkering given it's age and mileage. Neither I nor the car have anything to hide, but we cannot possibly know everything that might be of concern to you. We'll be happy to accommodate your request to view the car in person. All sales are final and bidding on this auction constitutes acceptance of these terms in their entirety. You are bidding to buy this car, not to have the right to take a look at it! Your bid is a legal binding contract, and feedback will be left on the winning bidder, good or bad, depending on your actions. I simply do not tolerate bidders who do not step up to the plate and will pursue them to the fullest extent allowed by law. Payment: A non-refundable Paypal deposit of $250 is due IMMEDIATELY after the winning bid, just to weed out the bidders up to no good. If that doesn't happen, the auction will run it's course. (Thanks for that option, eBay!) Certified check, M/O, wire transfer, or cash only for the remainder and due within 7 days of auction close or the buyer will forfeit it’s rights for the car and it will be relisted. Full payment must clear my bank before pick-up is even attempted. The car must be picked up within 14 days of auction close or you are able to arrange something else with me. Please email me if you have questions that are not covered by the narrative or pictures. Thanks and good luck! God Bless America and all our BRAVE guys out there! I was wrong about them; both a good, original bumpers with a bit of chrome peeling but still VERY usable! One front bumper bracket is broken and all others look really nice. They are greasy and dusty from decades of storage, for show purposes they will need new chrome.
