Vehicle Detail
This 2 Owner 220s is one of the most original and heavily documented cars we have encountered. In the 1960s Mercedes Benz advertised themselves manufacturers of "The World's Finest Motorcar"and this was their upper-level sedan with all the solidity and engineering the German marque stood for. Except for a missing radio, this car is as complete as when it rolled off the ship for delivery in Portland Oregon in 1962. The first owner watched the car unload. She had ordered her 220S through Miller Motors in Oregon City for $4975 1962 dollars, which was far more than the price of the average American sedan of the time. She enjoyed the Mercedes for decades, always servicing and maintaining it. Eventually she gave the car over to the second owner who drove it for years before parking it with an engine problem. The straight six engine has one bad cylinder, whether valve or piston is unknown. The engine bay is as from the factory, unaltered, with all components original and complete, including the factory marked "220" dipstick gauge. This Mercedes Blue 220S has approximately 147,000 actual miles on it and has been stored in a garage in non-running condition for 10 years. It is waiting to be awakened and refurbished or restored. The exterior grill, chrome and bright trim are complete and in wonderful condition. The off-white interior is the optional pleated MB-Tex leather, legendary for its appearance and long-lasting quality. Driver's seat base is torn, the rest of the upholstery could be returned to great condition. The factory applied a generous amount of dash and interior trim mahogany and the wood appears very recoverable. The solid chrome dash pieces, heavy and sure in their operation, just need a polish to look like new. For an older Mercedes, this sedan is unusually rust-free. The top exterior surfaces of the car have light surface rust, but there are no evident rust problems anywhere else -- no known rust in the chassis, fenders, rockers, trunk, floor, or firewall. This car feels rock solid. Even sitting for 10 years, the doors open smoothly and close with a hefty click, a Mercedes Benz tradition. A look underneath the car reveals everything in order and gives a closer view of the then-advanced Mercedes Benz rear swing axle. All documentation and receipts for work done from 1962 on have been retained. This Mercedes has all its original paperwork, including window sticker, data card, owners manuals, assorted dealer supplied notices and brochures, and of course, the title is untarnished. Receipts for mechanical work are comprehensive since the car was new, beginning with a receipt for initial service from Portland's Don Rasmussen Mercedes in the golden year of 1962. Bidding for this dusty German gem and all its provenance begins at a paltry $1200. Or This 220s can be yours to bring back to life for the Buy It Now price of $2900. That low figure buys a lot of car and treasure trove of automotive history.
