Vehicle Detail
1971 Porsche 911T Targa Offered for sale in this NO RESERVE auction is this beautiful 1971 (12/70 production date) Porsche 911T Targa. I am sure you are aware that early short bumper 911s are highly desirable in both SWB and this LWB version, and even more so when they are solid numbers matching versions that are documented with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. These classic Porsches are becoming increasingly difficult to find as the majority of them are going back to Germany - these iconic early 911s are highly prized there. This particular 911 came out of an estate of a gentleman in southern Florida who had a few different Porsches in his personal collection. He had owned this car for over 25 years, though it has been off the road for the past few years as his health declined. It had been garage stored on a trickle charger, and though it started right up after sitting, we still chose to have it transported to a shop to have it gone through properly. The old gas was flushed out of the system, the oil was replaced, the transmission fluid was replaced, the brake lines were flushed, and the plugs/wires were replaced to ensure the car is roadworthy. I have enjoyed driving this car several hundred miles up and down the coast of Florida without incident, just to be sure it's ready for the next owner. We are now selling it on to settle the estate in this NO RESERVE auction. Please remember, this auction will close Sunday, March 11th... don't miss it! Engine and Gearbox: As mentioned earlier, the mechanics were gone through to make sure the car is drivable. The engine starts right up with the turn of the key both cold or warm, and does not smoke. The idle settles at just under 1k after a bit of throttling warms it up. Our local independent Porsche shop replaced plugs and wires, but there still needs to be some adjusting done on the carburetors to make the car run as smoothly as it can (without sputtering or poping). It will be best to have that setup done by a Porsche carb expert, as the tuning can be finicky. The engine does run strong, and it's energetic throughout the RPM range. It doesn't have any clattering or unusual noises to worry about, and the internals seem tight. There are a couple of oil leaks, the mechanic indicated they were from a valve cover gasket and a feed line. The oil pressure is good, and we had a leakdown test performed to check the engine's health and the cylinders read: #1 -8%, #2 -8%, #3 -7%, #4 -6%, $5 -8%, #6 -7%. Anything below 10% is very good! The clutch grabs tightly and doesn't have any slippage. The gearbox runs up and down through all gears, but the shifting is a bit vague and sometimes hangs up while going into a gear, making a bit of a grinding noise. I am sold these things are typically solved by replacing the bushings and I understand that is a fairly easy and inexpensive project. The tires have great tread but they are a bit old and dry rotted. There are no signs of repair on the transmission case or engine case, which is always a good sign! Speaking to originality - the transmission number (7115177) and engine number (6116029) were verified by Porsche to be original to this car - making it "matching numbers". Exterior: As you can see from the photos, this is a beautiful looking car. The color is non-stock Polo Red, but the car originally came Burgundy Red. I am not sure when the change occurred, but judging by the non-stock flag mirror, I would guess it was in the 80s! The paint job is driver quality, and the paint does have some imperfections. There are several small scratches and chips here and there and a couple of small bubbles of surface rust on the front fenders and below the left rear window, but there are no holes anywhere or major dents. All the panels are original to the car, they are straight, and the body gaps indicate proper fitment. The targa top appears to have been re-finished at some point, and it fits fairly well but still has a small leak along the top of the door windows. All of the glass is in good condition and has no cracks, but there is a slight chip on the passenger side of the windscreen. You will notice the targa bar is also in excellent condition, and looks as nice as it probably did when it was new. The car still has the optional Porsche Fuchs (light metal wheels) that are in great shape and original to the car too... a very desirable option. Other options include: US Equipment, Light Metal Wheels, Antenna Left w/loudspeaker, Noise Suppression, Comfort Equipment, and Tinted Glass All Around. Interior: The interior of this car is 99% stock, the exceptions being a 1980s cassette stereo and a similar vintage Blaupunkt speaker system. The seats are in good shape, as is most of the rest of the interior. The carpets are original and all in excellent condition. The door pockets will need some attention, as they typically do, and the side trim in the back seats needs to be flattened out and reinstalled. There is a crack on the dash, but the tops of the doors are in good condition as is all the chrome inside. The gauges all seem to work properly, with the exception of the odometer which is stopped at 01,603 miles. That said, the trip meter still works too! Under the hood, the felt carpets are in nice presentable shape as you can see from the photo. By the way, if there's any specific photos you would like of the interior, please email me and I will snap some for you. Underneath: If you are looking at early Porsches, you know this is the most critical area. This car is VERY solid underneath, and the pans are all factory original. The main pan is in great condition and has no signs of rust, the front suspension pan is nice and rust free, all the jack points are solid as is the tow hook, the battery boxes are solid, rockers are solid, as are the inner fender wells. No rust issues or hack-job floor replacements here! Miscellaneous: Please email me with any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer them quickly. If you need additional photos, please let me know and I'll take them for you. Of course we invite any interested buyers to have an inspection of their own done (at your cost) anytime up until the day before the auction closes. Due to the fact this car is over 40 years old, it is being sold as-is. If you need a shipping quote let me know and I can make some calls for you. If you are an overseas buyer, we can assist with transportation to any port (Miami is the closest) and export logistics if need be.
