Vehicle Detail

This is a North Carolina car I picked up from the original owner. I drove it every day while in high school and loved every minute of it. I hope you will get as much enjoyment out of this vehicle as I did. When I bought her she was all original, I did a fair amount of hot rodding without getting too out of hand. What you will get is a stout classic that is fun to drive every day and won't get you into any trouble you are not looking for. As far as I have ever been able to figure out the Malibu used to be an upgraded premium body option of the Chevelle. This is a Chevelle first and then a Malibu. Four doors so you don't have to keep replacing worn out door hinges or get out of the car every time someone needs to get in or out of the back seat. Bench seats so there are seat belts for six people comfortably which is pretty fun and your girlfriend or boyfriend can sit right next to you in the front seat. There are drum brakes all the way around, people make a big deal about that but honestly I never had any trouble getting her slowed down. Here is what I did: I switched the original 307 small block out for a 350 (still a small block so you can't see the difference only feel it.) The 307 badges are still on the front fenders so it is a bit of a sleeper. Changed the Chevrolet two barrel to a Holly four barrel carburetor on a better flowing intake manifold and better flowing air cleaner. One of the first things I did was change from points to HEI electronic ignition - after all no one ever talks about the good old days of having to set points on a regular basis. I had custom dual three inch exhaust run all the way back with a cross over pipe and Terminator mufflers and put fiberglass wrapped headers at the engine. The system produces a nice deep throaty roar when you really get on the gas and get all four barrels of the carburetor wide open but it is quiet as a mouse when you are tooling down the highway and trying to blend in with the crowd (read not getting noticed by smokey.) Between the engine and wheels I had a Turbohydromatic 350 automatic transmission custom rebuilt and put it in with a high stall torque coverter so the gears shift hard and fast just like you would bang through the gears on a manual transmission. The wheels are aluminum mags but I still have the original trim rings if you want to go back to stock. In fact I have a lot of the original parts (not the numbers matching block) if you wanted to put her back to stock. After 30 years the springs which were probably too soft to begin with got changed out for some stiffer ones which really improved handling and responsiveness. Current condition: She sat in my garage for the last 8 years or so, I got into motorcycles... The interior is in great shape, the original dark green. The carpet is in great shape and the front seat was recovered just like original. The back seat should probably be recovered at some point. The original back deck panel needs to be replaced, it is old and faded. The dash has a crack in the middle which never bothered me too much. Before she got parked in the garage she suffered from two hit and runs while she was parked. You can see the creases in the body work, one on each front fender. The drivers side door also has a tiny crease in the sheet metal and a scrape in the paint from one of those events. There are a few really small rust spots showing on the lower portions of the doors. Right behind the rear doors on both sides in front of the wheel wells the body is showing rust. The good news is that parts are really easy to get hold of for these cars. You could get the creases popped out of the front fenders or just pick up a couple of new ones. You can get new sheet metal stamped per the original factory for the areas behind the rear doors. The compression is off on one side of the engine. It think that is being caused by bent valves but it could be something else like the rings. As I said I think it is the valves which would be an easy fix. Fun things about the car: Bench seats in the front have lots of potential. The high beam switch is a foot switch on the floor. Powerful power steering and stiff springs make for a car that handles better than you ever thought anything from 1969 could. The backwards facing rake on the front end makes the steering get a little floaty once you get up over 150mph. You are unlikely to run out of trunk space. Thanks for looking. If I hadn't gotten hooked on motorcycles I would still be totally in love with this car. I'm relocating across the country so she needs a new home.
