Vehicle Detail

This rather rare vintage 1960 Mercedes Benz 190D diesel station wagon is a literal barn find. I had to help the owner remove about 4 inches of dirt that from in front of the old barn doors to get them open so we could pull the car out! Here is the story of this car: In 1960 James Battle, Captain USMC brought this car back to Idaho with him from Germany where he had special ordered the car while in military service in Germany. Mercedes did not build thier own station wagon for the 190 series cars back in those days, but had Binz Karosserie build the wagon part of the car for them, it has serial number 1569 from that company. In 1966 the 2nd owner bought the car, and drove it until 1977 when it was last licensed. His wife died that year, and for sentimental reasons he then put the car into the dairy milking parlor barn on the family farm where it has sat until yesterday when I bought the car from him. About 10 years ago he started the car, but said it did not run very well most likely due to old fuel. I have not tried to start the car. The odometer reads 26,009 miles and he said the odometer had turned over so it is 126,006 miles now. (An old oil change service sticker on the door frame shows the car had about 44,000 miles on it in 1970) The car has the 4-cylinder diesel engine, with a 4-spd manual transmission on the column. The brakes are not functional. The tires on the car when we removed it from the barn were rotted and literally falling off the rims, so I found 4 used 13-inch tires to put on the car so we could roll it around. I brought the car home and hosed off enough dirt to plant a small garden! There is no serious cancer rust, only surface rust since we don't use salt on the roads here in Idaho, and the climate is very dry with low humidity plus the car has been stored inside the barn for the last 35 years. The top paint is peeling off, as well as the paint off the tailgate. This is a restoration project, you cannot drive this home without some mechanical TLC! The winning bidder will need to make full payment within 7 business days end of the auction by bank certified check, and I will mail a clear Idaho title and bill of sale. The car can sit here at my place in SW Idaho (about 45 miles west of Boise) for up to 60 days at no charge while the winning bidder makes arrangements for pickup of the car.
