Vehicle Detail
This is probably the only car of its kind in the US. If you are looking for a unique vehicle to set you apart from the crowd this might just be the ride you are looking for. It is a right hand drive 1970 Mercedes 280S purchased new by my grandparents in South Africa. Yes you hear correctly you steer this one from the right side of the car. It is perfectly legal here, all you need to do is wrap you head around it. I inherited the car in 2001 and had it shipped over here in running condition. The shipping required it to be steam cleaned and drained of all fluids and the batter removed. Since the I have never had the time to put it back on the road so the fuel system should be completely empty. There is still no battery. As I said it was in running condition when shipped and has been stored in my garage since then. I pulled the spark plugs out and sprayed oil in the cylinders and I can't remember if I put antifreeze back in the coolant system. As far as I know it used to run on leaded gas but that is not a problem. There are several options there, you can run lead substitute, some cars did not need any modification to run on unleaded, others needed to have the valves replaced. All of the tires are new and I have 7 original grey hubcaps and an 8th in green. Now for what it needs The pain is not in bad shape but I would have the whole car repainted. The passenger side door has a crack in the pain only and very superficial rust in the 4" by 4" crack. The trim strip is missing off that door. The roof by the rear window has a shallow crease and 7" by 7" paint scratches. I believe the body is all original and is in great shape, there are rust blisters and no holes. The underbody appears to be in great shape too, I think they must have regularly had it undercoated.. I am moving out to the West Coast which is why I'm selling the vehicle. Hopefully the successful bidder loves the car and I don't end up regretting it too much. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer. Plan on picking up on a trailer or using a shipper. On Feb-25-12 at 15:28:55 PST, seller added the following information: This is probably the only car of its kind in the US.
