Vehicle Detail
Welcome to the Classic Car Center! To assure the winning bidder that the vehicle is all that they expected, we provide a satisfaction guaranty to the buyer: if on personal inspection you decide that you do not want the vehicle for any reason, you don’t have to buy it! Please see the material in blue print at the end of this description for the full details of our Buyer Satisfaction policy. Now to the details on this fully restored 1957 Thunderbird. The Best of the Baby Birds Of the three years that the original two-seat Thunderbirds were built, many enthusiasts consider the 1957 model year to have been the best—and most collectible—of the years. Our ’57 was treated to a complete frame-off restoration less than 2500 miles ago. The restoration consumed 2 years at a cost of $57,000—and that was calculated using a $10/hr assigned labor rate! If it had been done at normal shop rates, the cost would have exceeded $100,000. Photo documentation of the restoration is available with the car. . Restored as Original This Thunderbird started out life in Dearborn as a Dusk Rose car with a white interior. Today, after its restoration, it looks like it did then. For those who wish to do their own decoding, we have included a photos of the car’s VIN plate. Nice Cosmetics · Paint, Body and Chrome The paint is very nice—Dusk Rose on the body and Colonial White on the hardtop. The glass has been replaced and the chrome is bright and shiny. As the pictures make clear, the underside of this car is free from any visible rust or corrosion. With some detailing, this T-bird could be on its way to the show circuit. · Interior The white interior is in very nice condition. The older white convertible top is in good condition but hasn’t been used recently and will need sun-stretching to regain its pliability. In addition to the hardtop and convertible top is a white tonneau that snaps on to cover the entire cockpit or, when unzipped, just the passenger seat. This car has a center console housing the floor mounted gear shift lever. Mechanically Restored Open the hood and you are looking into a fully detailed engine bay that, with a few hours work on a Saturday would put it at a show-quality level. · Engine All of the mechanical systems on the car have been replaced, rebuilt or refurbished. The 312 cid engine was professionally rebuilt following Frohmader guidelines with all new parts (rings, bearings, seals, oil and water pumps, etc.) The heads were rebuilt at the same time with hardened valve seats for use with today’s unleaded gasoline. The engine has approximately 2,500 miles since being rebuilt. A new reproduction Holley 4V carburetor for unleaded gas was installed along with the addition of a Pertronic solid state ignition. A new stainless steel exhaust system was installed, a particularly important addition for classic cars that aren’t driven every day. · Transmission Similarly, the Fordomatic automatic transmission was professionally rebuilt at the same time as the motor, and has the same low mileage since the rebuild. Both the motor and transmission run as new. A Well-optioned and Prepared Car This Thunderbird came equipped from the factory with power steering, power brakes and power windows. During the restoration, the entire brake system was replaced with a dual master cylinder, front disc brakes and an oversized booster for improved stopping. A heavy duty front sway bar was installed for better handling. The tires, including the spare, are Coker Classic wide white wall radial reproductions. Wheel covers and fender skirts are NOS. Other features are: two-speed, auto-parking electric windshield wipers, the windshield washer option, dual stainless steel side view mirrors, a rare original factory rear-mounted antenna, and a reproduction AM/FM/Cassette stereo radio. The dash clock has been replaced with a Stewart Warner gauge that goes in the same space for constant monitoring of actual oil pressure. A new four-core radiator for high efficiency cooling for parade (and traffic) conditions was installed, as was a new heater core along with its controls. And, it’s Ready for 2012 Roads This Thunderbird was restored with modern driving conditions in mind: hardened valve seats for lead-free gasoline use; power disc brakes to provide improved stopping distance; front sway bar for better handling; a Pertronix ignition for improved dependability in all types of weather; a port-hole hardtop (with new headliner) for the cold, a soft-top for those occasional summer showers, and a tonneau when you have to leave it unattended for several hours. This is a classic that is ready for the driving challenges of 2012 with all the fun and class of one of 1957’s most iconic cars. And, in its original factory Dusk Rose, you are sure to be seen, whether at a car show, your favorite restaurant or a drive in the country.
