Vehicle Detail
1953 Volkswagen Standard Sedan Split Window "Zwitter" I purchased this car about two years ago from noted Volkswagen enthusiast Bill Collins, the founder of the Volkswagen club "Der Kafer Fahrer" and have enjoyed this car immensely! It was restored quite a while ago and has won some awards along the way...... the interior was re-upped about 10 years ago with correct materials from West Coast Classics. Runs and drives great on Vredestien tires..... mechanically it is superb, as both the previous owner Mr. Collins and then I drove this car frequently as to remain true to its heritage of being a "Der Kafer Fahrer" club car...... at some point in the 1980's the car received "juice brakes" in lieu of the cable brakes. I'm sure there are numerous details and minutia that i cannot include here in this description.... please contact me with any questions and/or requests. On Jan-03-12 at 22:22:08 PST, seller added the following information: This 1953 is a very late production "split window" volkswagen. Built on march 4th, 1953 6 days before production shifted to the more commonly seen oval window model manufactured through august 1957. This model known as a "zwitter" by volkswagen collectors was produced for 6 months from september 1, 1952 through march 10th 1953. the standard sedan is rarely seen in the united states as most export cars were deluxe models. the painted bumpers, hubcaps, black dash knobs and 3 spoke black steering wheel are correct, as is the grey exterior paint. restored during the early 1980's, it is an exceptional driver. it is powered by a correct 1131cc 25hp 4 cylinder engine with a 4 speed transaxle. for drivability the tires have been switched to vredestein radials and the brakes have been upgraded to hydraulics from the original "push-n-pray" mechanicals. This '53 has logged many miles touring the backroads of New England with Der Kafer Fahrer... the driver's group for old volkswagens produced from 1945-1957. In 1984 this car scored 90 points and won the "Senior Award" at Mid-America Old Time Automobile Association and placed 1st in class L-2 at MOTAA Petit jean Mountain show. In Both 2010 and 2011 this car won 2nd place in the split window class at The Rose City Bug-In - Portland, Oregon This car comes with a complete set of 16 Der Kafer Fahrer Newlsetters, the two awards from the Rose City Bug-in, the certificate of award from the 1984 NOTAA show, a gasoline dipstick, tool toll, some records and the VW Automuseum factory birth certificate showing the vin# , model # 25 DIN-PS, 1.1 liter engine and a factory production date of March 4th 1953 and a shipment date from the factory of March 6th, 1953On Jan-04-12 at 12:06:15 PST, seller added the following information: please inquire for additional photos....
