Vehicle Detail
Luxury Driven Fine Classic and Contemporary Motorcars It is the 50th Anniversary Year for the Big Cat. And what a beautiful way to celebrate! Here is a very fine "Driver" for the next enthusiast to enjoy and bring to another level. At auction is a beautiful 1969 E-type Jaguar Series II Fixed Head Coupe. This appears to be a matching numbers, West-coast car with an original 1970 sales receipt from Sabatini's British Cars in San Jose, California and the original build plate. First presented in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type immediately became an icon of modern design. Fifty years later, it is still ranked first in the Daily Telegraph's list of the "100 Most Beautiful Cars" of all time and is the second of only six automobiles held in the Museum of Modern Art permanent collections. The Jaguar XKE (as it is known in the USA) was an extremely advanced design mechanically as well, featuring 4-wheel disc brakes, a double overhead cam engine, and fully independent rear suspension. In its first incarnation, Series 1, it was the fastest production car ever made - clocking 150 mph and 0-60 in 6.4 seconds! For the Series II, between 1969 and 1971 only 4,855 cars of the Coupe model were individually hand-produced at the Jaguar works in Coventry, England, making this the rarest of all E-type Jaguars. Open headlights without glass covers, a wrap-around rear bumper, re-positioned and larger front indicators and tail lights below the bumpers, better cooling aided by an enlarged "mouth" and twin electric fans, up-rated brakes, a synchromesh 4 speed transmission and more comfortable seats with an adjustable back are some of the modifications for the Series II cars. Most of the big work has been done on this luxurious 1969 Grand Touring Sports Coupe over the last 10 years - with still some detail and trim work to go. Here are some of the improvements: Body repainted "Regency Red", New Chrome 72 Spoke Wire Wheels w/ Series I knock-offs, 5 Coker "Red-line" Tyres, Quick-spin Gear-reduction Starter, New Alternator and mount, Front and Rear Windscreen Seals, New Door and Window Seals, Gas tank drained, cleaned and re-installed, New Tank-filter and Sending Unit, Cylinder head re-surfaced, Valves cleaned, re-lapped and adjusted, Inner Camshaft sprockets replaced w/ new-style, Custom Stainless Exhaust, New Brake Master cylinder and Vacuum booster, Carburetors cleaned rebuilt and adjusted, Electric Clock and all Instruments and Gauges working, Complete New Interior - Leather seats, Door panels, Center console, Carpets and Headliner, Mini iPod/MP3 Audio System in Glove Box - there is a fat file of receipts for every nut bolt and washer on this Jaguar! That said, I repeat that this is a driver not a show car - though the car looks very good, the paint shows some wear on close inspection, some of the chrome shows its age, and not everything was done to Concours standards. The original Blaupunkt radio is still in the center console but does not work. There are still some adjustments that could improve panel fit and gaps, and some additional trim work - but the basics are here, solid, rust free, great looking and in very good condition -and it will truly fly down the highway! Compression is consistent at 155+ across all cylinders and oil pressure is excellent at 50+psi.
