Vehicle Detail

Fellow MG Enthusiasts, Thank you very much for all the information and advice given during, and after, the first listing of this great little MG YT. Many interesting thoughts and kind words were exchanged, but alas, no deal was struck. There were some VERY close offers, but maybe I was a bit too stubborn to give up on the pricing I felt strongly was correct for the car. In my mind, one of the rarest post-war MG’s in very restorable condition is a desirable commodity. Even if some of the previous work will need rework, it is my belief that the new owner will be better off with this YT than one that was plucked from a field, or from behind a garage. There are pages and pages of receipts for parts that are, even after long storage, going to be just fine, or easier to rehab than from scratch. I think there is also room for the idea that complete restoration is only one option. A rolling restoration may be a viable option for some. Additionally, I feel this model will likely go by way of the MG TC and MGA Twin Cam. Remember when you could buy a nice twin cam or TC for $20K? Now a nice twin cam can be $50-$70K. I feel this model has that kind of potential. As my wise friend Gordie says… “you never pay too much for a good collector car… you just buy a little early sometimes.” That was, and is, my thought process. Many of you were of similar mind, but reminded me that restoration is an expensive proposition. I have listened, and believe I have responded accordingly. This is now a NO RESERVE auction, with the opening bid set at the highest bid attained during the last listing. That bid did not meet the reserve. Now, there will be no wondering what the reserve is, or if the car will sell. Once the first bid is submitted, meeting the minimum, someone is going to acquire a great little YT project. Thank you again for reading, considering, and bidding. Dan Fadden I reserve the right to end this auction at any time, as this car is for sale locally, and in club newsletters and other venues. Original listing follows: You are bidding on a 1950 MG YT. This YT is Body # 53241/897, and is engine # XPAG-TR-14848. I am selling this car for a sweet, elderly lady whose husband passed away while he was restoring the car. Restoring this car was his hobby, and he was very proud of his accomplishment, but unfortunately, did not get to see the project through to the finish. Though the owner never finished the car, his widow tells me he did get to drive it around the neighborhood a few times, and remembers him coming down the street honking the horn and waving to all the neighbors who had been watching the progress over the years. This YT has been sitting covered, and on jack stands in their spotlessly clean garage since the owner’s passing in 1994. It is my hope to find a good home for this YT, in order to provide a happy ending for the owner, his widow, and the car. Since I am not an expert on the MG YT, I can only do my best to describe what I see, and must count on you to ask questions and request additional pictures of specific areas you may be interested in. I know there are many of you who are very passionate and knowledgeable about early MG’s, and I welcome you send me comments and corrections if I have stated anything incorrectly. My goal is to provide you, the potential buyer, with the best information possible, so both buyer and seller are happy at the end of the transaction. Buying a collector car should be fun, and I intend to do my part to ensure this. I hope you will too. The body of the car in general, appears quite sound to me. I would call the work completed a bit “amateurish” but see nothing that indicates any major rust or collisions, and it is quite pleasing to look at overall. The area that does not look to me to be restored to original configuration is under the running boards. Not ever having seen another YT, I can not say for certain, but it looks as there were slotted holes for bolts to go through the running board, and into the inner sill area of the body. Instead, the running boards appear to be welded in place, and “frenched-in” to the body. I am sure I will receive plenty of comments on this topic, and will post those that are informative. Additionally, the front fenders do not appear symmetric left to right. I suppose this could be from the fact that these cars were pretty much hand built, or it could be that one is from a YA or some other model. It does not appear to be from a collision, as the underside of the fenders show no sign of collision. The front frame rails show no sign of a collision either. The door gaps could use a little fussing, but overall, the car would look quite nice going down the road as it sits. The chassis is quite nice looking, especially for having sat since 1994. It looks as if the front end was rebuilt, as the trunions look all shiny and new, and the way it was painted indicates a total tear-down. The A arm bushings look dry, probably just from sitting. I am not sure if nylon or any of the other modern materials were available at the time of the rebuild, so they appear to be just the old black rubber. The exhaust system looks new, and everything has an overall tidy look. I do not think this level of neatness could have been accomplished with the body on the frame. Oh, almost forgot, this car has the hidden, on-board jacking system. It looks as if all four corner jacks are present, and the pump and reservoir are in a parts box. I could use some help verifying the pump is correct, and the correct location of the pump and reservoir on the car. I would call the overall condition of the underside very nice. The interior is best described in pictures. I do not know who made it, but it is generally pleasing and very serviceable. There are several boxes of interior material, including matching vinyl, thread, cotton wading, door panels that are sewn and ready for installation, and a box of re-chromed handles and such. There is also a black automotive type carpet ready for installation. The engine, as far as I know, has not been run since the owner died in 1994. The deceased owner and I have a mutual friend, who upon the owners passing, went to the YT and removed the spark plugs and squirted oil in the cylinders and turned the engine over several times. He is also the person who removed the battery, and put the car up on jack stands. The car then sat in the deceased’s heated garage until last week, when it was transported by roll-back to my garage, in preparation for sale. The engine looks complete, turns over easily by hand, and I have every reason to believe it would start up and run fine, given some fresh gas and maybe cleaning the carburetor float bowls. The original top is on the frame, and is only good for use as a pattern to fabricate a new top. The side curtain frames have no upholstery remaining. The brightwork was probably re plated back at the time of the restoration, and is still generally quite nice. It remains in what I would call “good driver” condition. Overall, it is my feeling that this little YT presents an excellent opportunity for someone to own one of the rarest post-war MGs at an affordable price. This car, with very little work, could be driven now, and completed as a rolling restoration, or could be used as an excellent starting point for a higher-level restoration. Though it is not a show car, it is a cute little YT, pleasing to look at, is sound overall, and is one of approximately 877 ever built. A worthwhile endeavor to be sure. A $500 non-refundable paypal deposit is required within 24 hours of end of auction. The balance is due within 5 days, and can be paid by wire transfer, or certified check. The balance can also be paid in person, upon picking up the car. The car will not be released until all funds are secured. This car is being sold on a valid / transferable New York State registration. New York did not title cars until 1973 (I believe). Delivery / shipping of the car are the buyer’s responsibility. I will do my best to be available at the time that works best for the buyer, or the buyer’s transportation company. I can recommend a shipping company if you need one. I would appreciate the car being picked up within 10 days of auctions end. If this is not possible, I ask you to discuss it with me before you bid. If you are outside of the United States or Canada and would like to bid on this car, please email me and I can clear you to bid after we talk about payment and shipping details. This MG is for sale locally, and in other publications, so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Of course, the car is sold “as is.” Thank you for your interest. Good luck with your bidding. Dan Fadden
