DESCRIPTION:

Feast your eyes on a true iconic classic automobile. This car evokes images of that famous movie "American Graffiti" and the mysterious woman in the Thunderbird driving around town. Re-living the past doesn't get any better than our T-Bird. This car is being sold by us on consignment on behalf of the current (second) owner. The current owner has numerous receipts and documentation for this T-Bird.

HISTORY:

Originally manufactured in March 1956, this T-Bird was sold as a new car later in 1956 by a local Ford Dealer down the road from our dealership. The car was traded back into that same Dealer in early 1980 and offered for sale again. The current owner bought the car in July 1980 and has kept it in storage ever since taking it out for the occasional "Sunday drive". The car's original paint (Golden Glow Yellow) had begun to show it's age in spots so the original owner had it completely repainted to "Colonial White" to match the hardtop. The current owner repainted the car back to the original "Golden Glow Yellow" during a restoration, which was completed in the mid-eighties and was an inside-out restoration, but not a concours (frame-off) restoration (the original color scheme of this car was a yellow body and a white hardtop). During the restoration, the paint and body was redone, the exterior chrome was re-chromed, mechanicals were restored or replaced, all electronics were put in working order, the interior got new carpet, new door panels, new upholstery, and more. Because some rust had developed in the 1/4 panels, both left and right 1/4 panels were replaced as part of the restoration. To make the car more summer-friendly in our hot and muggy East Coast climate, an aftermarket A/C system was professionally installed and all those components still look new today. And, the A/C still works great! During the engine rebuild the Carb was switched to a Holley unit and the oil-bath type air filter/cleaner was replaced for a traditional paper air filter set-up. The original oil-bath filter will come with this car. The current owner is looking for the original Carb. Some other exterior engine components were replaced to make the engine perform better, but the block is the original block and the transmission is original, as well.

CONDITION:

Cosmetically, this T-Bird looks great inside and out with only a few really noticeable blemishes and several minor ones. Outside, the paint still looks great overall and shines brightly. There are hardly any chips or scratches, but the few that do exist are rather noticeable. I will give you a walk-around detailed description of the paint and trim highlighting any issues: The chrome front bumper has no dents or rust and looks really good with only very minor pitting, the front grille looks very nice, the hood looks very nice, the left fender looks very nice, but does have a fairly large chip on the top-side inside edge at the back of the hood. The left door looks nice, but has a 1/2" crack in the paint on the top of the door and a large chip on the door's rear edge. The left 1/4 panel looks very nice, the trunk lid looks very nice, the rear bumper looks good and has no dents, but does have some minor pitting and oxidation. The right 1/4 panel looks very nice, the right door has a tiny chip on the rear edge (looks very nice otherwise), the right fender looks nice, but has a very large chip and cracking paint on the top edge beside the rear of the hood (see photo below Description). The mirror chrome is slightly pitted and a little dull, the softtop fabric looks nice, but the weatherstrip on the inside is worn, ripped and/or missing in spots. The hardtop looks great inside and out (paint looks great too), but has a loose piece of weatherstrip on it. The wheel hubcaps look nice with only slight chrome pitting. The windshield, side glass and rear windows (glass and/or plastic) all look good, but the driver's side vent window glass is delaminating and has a crack in it (the chrome frame is holding that piece of glass together).

Inside, this T-Bird shines as well. The carpet looks great, the dash looks great (there aren't even any cracks in the top pad!), the seat cover looks great, the door panels look great and the inside of the two tops look great too. There are only a few interior blemishes, which I will list here: The driver's side of the seat cover has a tear on the side down by the seat adjuster handle, the shifter boot is torn, the weatherstripping is worn, a couple dash knobs are missing by the gauge cluster, the interior chrome is pitted in spots, the metal door sills are scratched, the rear-view mirror is deteriorating and hard to see out of, and lastly, the brake pedal rubber cover is missing. None of these items is major and all of them can be repaired over time while you own the car.

Mechanically, this car is in very good condition and it can safely and reliably be driven and enjoyed everyday as it is. In fact, the engine fires right up without hesitation and the clutch engages smoothly with easy take-offs. The car scoots down the road with brisk acceleration and the ride is soft and comfortable. The side doors could stand to be adjusted at the strikers so that they close tighter and the trunk lid striker could be adjusted as well, but these are easy fixes. The functioning A/C system keeps it cool inside on hot summer days, but the car is really in it's element with the top down and the wind blowing in your hair!

Unfortunately, we are not experts regarding the Ford Thunderbird and it's technical specifications for originality and proper restoration, but we know what we see and drive and this T-Bird is a very nice car overall.
