Vehicle Detail
Up for auction today is our 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet.Purchased here on ebay 11 years ago as a project car from a young man in Atlanta. Virtually rust free southern car. I have stored it in my garage for the last 11 years. Most of the mechanical work has been done with body work remaining to make this a nice fun sunny day car for someone. The odometer was not working when I bought the car and I never fixed it so the total mileage on the body is unknown. When I purchased the car it had a bad engine due to overheating and a bent rear axle from being hit on the driver side rear quarter. At the time I also owned a 1984 VW GTI which I had owned since new and used it as a donor car to get this car back on the road for the Mrs to drive around town on sunny days. As of 27 April 2003 here is the list of repairs I had performed on the Cabriolet:1. Installed 1984 VW GTI engine & fuel injection components2. New cooling system hoses3. New V-belts4. New oil pump5. New battery ground cable6. Install GTI radiator and fan assembly7. Changed oil and filter8. Installed new left driveshaft with new CV joints.9. New shifter bearings10. New clutch and release bearing11. Installed GTI wheels and tires12. New rear flexible brake hoses13. Repacked rear wheel bearings14. Installed GTI rear axle beam.15. Installed GTI rear struts.16. Repaired windshield washer pump17. Repaired radiator fan wiring.18. New fuel filter19. Retained Cabriolet rear brake drums.20. New rear inner wheal bearing seals21. New rear brake cylinders22. New trunk strut (to keep trunk lid open).23. Repaired seat track latch.24. Repaired rear seat fold-down latch.25. New engine ground cable.26. New coolant.27. Checked spare tire pressure and stowed jack.28. Replaced turn signal fuse.29. Replaced rear window defroster fuse.30. Checked manual transmission oil.31. Adjusted parking brake32. Installed GTI hood latch. Since this list was compiled in 2003 we've done very little to the car and driven it less than 100-200 miles I'm sure. It had been licensed for a while but the water pump went out a few years ago. The car also needs new wheel bearings on both front wheels, the axles are very good, just the bearings are noisy. The top looks ok but leaks so we have had the car stored in our garage. The car started and drove very well when we last drove it last year. The battery is now totally dead and with the water pump issue, I've simply not replaced it. It should start and run just fine with a new battery. It always started easily and ran smoothly. The engine was very strong with plenty of power and it never smoked or burned any oil as I had taken very good care of the GTI donor car since new. If used as a daily driver or stored outside, the car would need a new top in order to protect the interior. The biggest challenge for the new owner will be to repair the body damage and repaint the car. We were just using it as a fun sunny day car and never got around to fixing the body damage. The body damage is to the driver side quarter panel behind the wheel and there is a football sized dent on the passenger side between the rear wheel and passenger door. Let me be clear, this car does need some work, how much would depend on your goals with it. The car is 25 years old and has been driven very little...100-200 miles in the last 11 years. It does not look new and needs a water pump, front wheel bearings, a battery and 4 new tires at a minimum to be roadworthy. The tires on the car have very little wear but they are dry rotted and don't hold air very well any more. There is a rock chip in the windshield on the passenger side (see photo). The interior is in good condition with only a few small imperfections. A small tear in the rear seat backrest and some wear on the driver seat. The dashboard is in very good condition. I do have a few spare parts which will go with the car to the new owner including a full size spare tire from the GTI donor car. The A/C compressor is mounted on the car but is not hooked up in any way. We like the car and are reluctant to sell it but we've not been driving it, we're cleaning out things we don't use and we need the garage space. I do have a reserve set which is reasonable. I'd like to see the car go to someone who will get some good use out of it. If you have any questions or want to see a photo of a particular part of the car please just email or call. You can reach me at 606-620-2780 after 4:30 PM eastern time M-F or any time on weekends. Please leave a detailed message if necessary. I'm sure I've forgotten something so if you have a question please just ask. If you have no (0) or less than 10 feedback contact me before bidding to prevent cancellation of your bid. If you bid on the car, you are expected to follow through with the transaction. Please do not bid on the car unless you are prepared to pay for it and pick it up in a reasonable time frame. $250 deposit is due within 24 hours of auction end to hold the car for 2 weeks. The car needs to be picked up within 2 weeks of the end of the auction. We reserve the right to end this auction early as we are advertising it for sale locally.
